What caused it and how old were you when it kicked in?

Last month, I realized I've been driving around almost daily blasting rock music (Zeppelin rocks!) LOUD in my car for at LEAST 20 minutes a day for the past 20 years.

Oy.

I probably should stop before I go deaf.

Anyone have any hearing loss?

My 5 year old went to the ENT the other day and has “moderatel” hearing loss. Gonna have to see more specialists on whether or not it’s something that’s going to get worse or if it’s been that way from the beginning.

I work around very loud equipment and always have my ear plugs in. A lot of guys don’t wear any and I can’t imagine the type of hearing loss that have/will get.

Yes. At least 50% loss in right ear and 40% in left ear. Throw in some tinnitus for good measure. Years of weapons quals, combat, being around running and firing M1, Bradleys, towed and self propelled Howitzers and M88s with little to no hearing protection and being issued those horrible two sided ones that were worthless.

The hearing tech when I got checked for the VA told me I could probably use hearing aids now.

I know veterans have hearing loss issues.

I had no idea how loud guns were until I went target shooting.

They are LOUD. Even a 22 caliber.

I have tinnitus probably from flight line work, or from a Styx concert.

They tell me my hearing is okay, but I can’t hear people well if in a crowded situation like a restaurant.

I was POL (I think you are if I remember correctly) and I have the same exact hearing issue. I don’t even try to catch what people are saying anymore. It just happened to me at a busy visitation last week. Good times.

Oh and tinnitus that I hardly notice anymore because it never stops.

Did you ever think about getting hearing aids or are you a poor.

It isn't that bad plus I'm adhd (diagnosed) so if there are multiple sources of sound it is hard for.me to directly listen to one. I am doing better about wearing ear pro while hunting/shooting though.

What's crazy is I can hear some sounds, like a goose, when others wouldn't dream of it but if there is background noise, I can't hear shit.

Do you tell people you have a hearing loss, or do you just let them assume you are a douche?

13 tubes in my left ear has left me dead to the range that humans speak in. Supposedly I have 80 percent of normal heating, but it’s just human words I can’t hear.
My right ear is fine. It’s actually quite handy in marriage. “Did you say that in my good ear”, is how I blame my wife for all the stuff she told me to do that I forgot about.

And M-4s are nothing compared compared to tank gunnery tables or artillery, both of which I've heard, A LOT, without hearing pro.

It's a big reason why I was so forceful in my enforcing safety standards as a First Sergeant.

Living a year at Baghdad Airport with high frequency noise from C-5's.... yeah I can't hear shit in a crowd. VA disability for tinnitus. They already told me I have other hearing loss, but not enough to get hearing aids

You have a great memory. Fighter bases and hot pit refueling were brutal. I wore hearing protection all the time.

Remind me what years and where you served?

Do soldiers in combat wear hearing protection?

How about from Vietnam to present?

It was hit and miss in Desert Storm. I don't remember wearing them, but I know some units did. The last 20 years we did, but the two sided ones we were issued for part of it were crap.

My dad said he never wore them in Vietnam, 1 tour as an Infantry NCO, 2 as an Artillery officer. He's almost completely deaf.

You can wear hearing protection....but then you can't hear your fellow soldiers. Damn if you do, damn if you don't
I think I'd be more interested in hear the other sides soldiers rather than my fellow soldiers.

Profound hearing loss. I had a very high fever as a kid. Probably the cause. I had a pocket watch my Grandpa gave me. I could hear it tick in one ear but not the other. My parents never made a connection to that and hearing loss.

Yeah, I've had increasing tinnitus for 20 years. I just have constant buzzing now.

The worst part is if I'm somewhere with just a bit of noise, like a restaurant or bar. It's just a wall of white noise. I can't even have a conversation with the person next to me.

Same boat. It’s rough. I can’t make out words over my kitchen faucet.

Wow! Did your Dad have the option of wearing them?

It seems like a good idea as an Artillery officer.

You basically just explained what I go through. It sucks because people think you are either 1) dumb 2) ignoring them

I have tinnitus and 20% loss in my left ear from a burst eardrum when I had to fly with a really bad cold years ago. I’ve had tubes put in about four times.
My right ear is starting to lose some hearing too. I guess I will get hearing aids at some point but I still get by.
Between that and having inherited the tendency to develop macular degeneration I am gonna be in deep poo poo at some point. 😒

How young are you?

My Mom (no pics) is 72 and just found out she has 40% hearing loss in her left ear.

She's not sure what caused it; maybe just age.

Start praying! We all get disabilities as we age.

I experienced that resturant problem last night at my son's engagement party. Just a lot of white noise.

Two Manhattans and three Lemon Drops later I didn't care.

And most modern restaurants have wood, metal and tile furnishings and fixtures and the sound just bounces around. Terrible.
