Do you watch TV/Movies with subtitles on?

There was a thread the other day where a couple people said they always watch TV/Movies with the subtitles on. More and more people are apparently turning the subtitles on. This little video addresses why audio has changed over the years and gotten harder to hear.

Yes, always. Easy with little ones around always making noise.

One of the British series on PBS had a Scottish character we could not understand so we did watch that series with the subtitles on. But normally we do not.
As an aside-the better your electronics , room and speakers, the more likely you are not to need the close captioning unless you really are hard of hearing.

Absolutely. Maybe decades of loud heavy rock music wasn’t good for my hearing.

Yep me too. I have a hearing loss in one ear after a burst eardrum and a sinus issue as a result plus I have developed tinnitus. I see my ENT Doc quarterly.
I don’t always need the subtitles but won’t hesitate when I need them.

Nope, I find myself focusing too much on the CC and miss things. My no pic wife always has them on though, especially if there’s any kind of accent, it annoys the hell out of me

I will watch without and then with if I like the movie.

The subtitles often pick up a lot of extra or background dialog. It’s also really helpful when they have hard to understand accents.
This. But only for certain shows like Game of Thrones, Better Call Saul, Peaky Blinders, Last of Us, etc, I like to have it on to pick up background dialog, technical points, and all sorts of nerdy shit that you'd never even know about without it.

I have my tv set to turn them on automatically for a few seconds if I rewind. I used that feature most when I watched Sons of Anarchy and Band of Brothers.

I had long suspected the Phillip Seymour Hoffman style of low, mumbly delivery was at the heart of my hearing TV problem.

Guess I was right. Well, partially right. Good enough for me ...

Not TV so much. Occasionally something we have DVR'd the sound will be a little sketchy so we will, but usually not and never live TV.

Movies we always do because they go from really quiet to super loud. We actually started it when we watched Brokeback Mountain (no homo) because we couldn't understand a damn thing Heath Ledger said.

yes, but it's not preferred.

I watch a lot of psychological thrillers and many are foreign, sometimes they are dubbed with English and others just add subtitles.

the dubbed voices can be annoying too

I stated to use subtitles when I had kids, I have shit for hearing anyways. I have no issues with subtitles and I often watch foreign shows/movies. There are so many great foreign shows/movies on streaming services now. I cant deal with dubbed versions of these so I just use the subtitles.

No unless its foreign language programming, except for shows with working class British.

huge help on game of thrones.

I never did but I do know. I have a hard time hearing the actors sometimes. The Batman, a movie which I loved, is just impoosible for me to hear most of the dialog.

Also a show like Deadwood was impossible for me to follow without subtitles.
