Does LaPhonso Ellis know anything about basketball?

Friday 8pm game between 2 of the conference bottom feeders. Expectations weren’t high on getting fox’s better let alone avg crews to call the game.

Speaking of Ellis believe he was at ND same time as Fran.

The reason I ask this is because so many clueless posters on here rip or belittle Brock. Ellis had nothing but praise for Brock and even mentioned that Fran needed to get Brock back in the game right away. You could here in the huddle with Coach Collins trying to get the team to keep Brock from getting into the paint. When an opposing coach is concerned about Brock, you know then that he is Big Ten quality. I have always been a fan of his. That is very strong credence.

That’s neat. Now evaluate his defense.

Brock is just too small. He could be effective if he had 4 good defenders behind him including a rim protector. He had none of that so you can’t hide him. The defense will always suck with or without him. Fran is an offensive genius, but he has no desire to endorse or coach defense. That’s why he’s never won in the Big Dance

Jeeeebus…. To “rate the team” on anything at this point in time is useless… abd unfair to tge players and coaches. This season has been a tough one. Injuries, limited manpower no inside presence’ in defense…let the season end. I am sure you folks are gonna get your wish as far as the coach goes… but this season was not just “Fran’s” fault. Tge whole recruiting/ retention game has changed. Ante-up if you want to compete. The new rule changes are going to devastate many a college program.

I wasn't a huge fan of Ellis as an announcer to begin with, but when he tried to compare Payton Sandfort's game to Reggie Miller's, I lost all respect for his evaluational skills at that point.

The only time he gets burned is with switching leaving him to guard a big underneath. He gets lots of steals and disruptions. He is not the worst defender on the team. Fran should never have his bigs guarding 40 feet away from the basket. Very poor defensive scheme. Brock is good at stopping opposing guards from penetrating. They do back him down with the dribble.

Honestly, I am not overwhelmed with Brock’s playing. For being a “Mr. Basketball” in Illinois I would expect more. Offensively he just doesn’t shine. He needs to develop a reliable shot from 15-20’ and get a little more physical defensively. Not doubting his potential…but potential doesn’t put points on the board or wins in the left hand column.

These people obviously know very little as past basketball stars and a current Big Ten coach compared to the whining experts here on this board as it relates to Brock Harding...

Yeah, 2/7 from field. Had the ball for last shot in 1st half when we were still in the game----his shot hit the side of the backboard.

No doubt Harding is a good passer. It's everything else.

I was just going to post something about LaPhonso, and saw the thread. I am not sure what was worse, watching the Hawkeyes suck or listening to LaPhonso repeat the same nonsense over and over and over and over... He was a pretty good player, but he is among the worst analysts.

2 of those shots were desperation heaves because somebody had to beat the clock. The reality was 2 of 5. The reality is also that he should of had about 15 assists if his teammates could have hit their wide open shots that he set them up for. They were 6 for 26.

But we’re a development program and getting a dog game among two B1G bottom-feeders and trying to make it interesting and relevant will help LaPhonso develop.

Lafonzo was always a high class guy. Great student in high school. Near or at the top of his class at East Saint Louis, and a greatr college player and pro.

Heard him make lots of comments. I was wondering what others think.
Super nice guy! I detailed his car a few times when he played for the Denver Nuggets and I was in HS. He was always nice, talked to everyone and tipped good. Not sure about his broadcasting but he was a heck of a player.

On a side note, besides how bad Ellis sucks, one of my biggest regrets in life was turning down doing a radio broadcast for a Colorado State game a few years ago.

I hate my voice. And that’s why I didn’t do it.👎🏿

My other big regret is not driving to Boulder on a Tuesday night around 2012ish (??) years ago to have a dinner with Neil Armstrong.
