All we could muster was a "that's kinda not cool" from @hydro2.0

BREAKING: Research into Pediatric Brain Cancer is essentially being shutdown by a brilliant research team because of Trump’s actions against the NIH.

Vice Chair of Research for Neurosurgery at UMass Chan Medical School, Dr. Rachael Sirianni just published this letter to the public:

“This is horrible to post, but I may as well post it. We are essentially shutting down research operations in my group, which is focused on treatments for pediatric brain cancer. I’m a well funded investigator, and there’s no choice. Science can’t function without the stability of NIH. Want to keep clarifying that my lab is not closing, and I am not leaving academia. We are stopping most of our experimental work.

“What’s happening to our country is inexcusable and much of the damage is already irreparable. We will continue with data collection for a recently funded grant that came from a private foundation. There will be no pursuit of new ideas for now. We will continue with data collection for a recently funded grant that came from a private foundation. There will be no pursuit of new ideas for now.”

Feel like thread title is misleading. School suspending incoming grad students(several dozen)no change to existing grad students

Someone clearly doesn't understand how "graduate schools" work.

Maybe if we dumb it down like an NCAA basketball team that graduates 5 seniors of a 12-man roster, but "DOGE cuts" prevent the 5 replacement freshman recruits from joining the team due to those "budget cuts"...

They gonna remain competitive?

New graduate students take on NEW studies and NEW projects. Existing studies continue with their EXISTING projects.

However, INCOMING graduate student do the bulk of the frontline work as they LEARN the lab techniques and other stuff. More senior graduate students are NOT doing much hands-on work in their last years, as they are busy WRITING a thesis and publications by that point.

I’m just trying to reconcile thread title.

Cuts shut down pediatric research.
Connect the dots for me? As you said, you’ll have to dumb it down.

Sealioning is a type of harassment or trolling that involves relentlessly demanding evidence from someone, often on topics that are irrelevant or have already been addressed. The harasser pretends to be sincere and civil, while feigning ignorance of the subject.

Yes.

THERE WILL BE NO NEW PEDIATRIC CANCER STUDIES STARTED BECAUSE THERE ARE NO INCOMING STUDENTS TO WORK ON THEM.

That "shuts down" research. Specifically, any NEW research stemming from what they've learned from current projects.
Doesn’t shut down existing work.

Shuts down incoming class. Do you know what each student was studying? You couldn’t even use “effectively” shuts down like the tweet says.

Just seems like a disingenuous title. Whatever.

So it is up to the federal government to subsidize a UMASS grad program to remain competitive while running two trillion dollar deficits? Jojo, you are obviously the smartest man alive in all subjects. Explain to us how this helps.

Shuts down incoming class
The incoming class THAT DOES THE BENCH WORK IN THE LABS.

Which they'll do for a year or two until they pass Qualifiers and decide on their OWN MS or PhD research project, that the next incoming classes will support work for THEM.

Listen- let me clarify. I think on the surface, cutting funds for medical research, in general, is not where I would find “savings”. I think this is sad.

I was not being a sea lion or whatever. I found the original tweet not to have a lot of info, googled it, and just didn’t myself find the headline an accurate reflection of what happened.

We probably agree on the topic, just not the headline.

The government's 'war on cancer' has been an abject failure for 45 years. Kind of crazy to act like this is an existential crisis because of a temporary cut in funding.

Just more HBOT hysteria.

I have no idea if you’re a Republican or Democrat, but Republicans could not care less about the deficit. If they did, they wouldn’t push tax cuts that expand the deficit, or push for more defense spending. They don’t care. If you’d rather have tax cuts and more pediatric brain cancer just say so.

You’re kidding right. Let me help you out, charts and everything. I’ll even quote the best part.

"Over the last few decades, the likelihood of surviving cancer has improved. From 1975-77 to 2013-19, the average probability of being alive in five years across all types rose from 49% to69%." The trend in survivability has improved across the board

Posts like this makes me wonder if we need to fund more research on how fvcking stupid humans can be. WTF.

I am neither. I agree with the Rs and support cuts that are being made to federal funding. We don’t have the money to simply do whatever we want, when we want. You know things like subsidizing a research program at a medical school so they can remain competitive with another school that is doing the same research. That is what this story is actually about. Not pediatric brain cancer.

With that said, I also agree with the Ds that the Trump tax cuts should be allowed to sunset and we need to look at new sources of income. We are running 2+ Trillion deficits every year. We pay almost a trillion dollars a year to service our debt. This number will quickly become unsustainable without massive inflation. Even if we cut $1T dollars annually from the deficit, we need more revenue.

But then, that line of thinking on this board gets you called MAGA by the over emotional takers on the left and a socialist by the slap dick MAGAs on the right.

PS, I see the star of life on your avatar. If you aren’t already, you should watch the PITT on hbo max. It will hit pretty close to home but it is very well done.

FWIW I started a thread earlier this week on cancer and HORTers seemed to not be on cancer's side. I was somewhat surprised. But now just assume everyone is lying. I think HORT loves selective cancer.

Yeah. Seems like a real clear, Vietnam or Afghanistan-type victory in the war on cancer: "The American Cancer Society (ACS) projects that in 2024, over 2 million new cases will be diagnosed in the U.S., with more than 610,000 individuals expected to lose their lives to the disease."

Cancer is a metabolic disease. You can search all you want for 'cancer genes' and ways to destroy them, but until we stop poisoning our air, food and water it will all be for naught. But al least Pharma shareholders have made a killing, huh?🙄

The ‘war on cancer’ arose from a toxic combination. A socialite with powerful friends and a misguided belief that cancer could be ‘conquered’ within 7 years recruited a flawed US President to lead an ‘all-out assault [against] one of mankind's deadliest and most elusive enemies’. Mary Lasker and her Citizens’ Committee for the Conquest of Cancer ran a skilful campaign during 1969–1971, comparing the number of cancer deaths with American troop losses in the unpopular Vietnam war. Richard Nixon preferred to compare US cancer mortality with American troop losses in World War II.
‘Waging war’ against a disease that is so intrinsic to our cellular biology is even more quixotic than declaring a war on terror, drugs or religion. ‘War’ is more than just a metaphor. It distorts political thinking about cancer with the illusory clarity of victory and defeat. Therapeutic attacks on the ‘enemy’ are prioritised over strategies to prevent the disease occurring, and where there is ‘war’, there goes the medical-industrial complex
.

Big Pharma doesn’t fund cutting edge basic research. They take what govt research produces and monetize it. And you benefit. Or you can just kill the basic research and say goodbye to new therapies. Hell, it was govt funded research that provided you with the internet. That might have been a mistake in your case.

Big Pharma funds hair loss and boner pill research. The US government, and the citizens, have done very well with subsidized research over the years. But, we are in burn it down mode.
I can see the Stead Family Children’s Hospital as I type this. So, let’s all do the wave for the sick kids, but let’s slash research funding…

Cancer is not a disease. It’s many diseases. Even Seyfried, who you seem to quote, would agree that cancer has a metabolic component and an environmental component. He would also agree that the treatment of cancer has progressed significantly, primarily funded b the United States government, leading to a significant increase in life expectancy. Look at pediatric leukemia. Survival has skyrocketed, again owing primarily to research funded by taxpayers.

Why aren’t our MAGA board members not starting threads about this stuff?

A lot of Trump voters will be waving to them this fall. Fake ass Christians pretending to give a shit.

This thread has so many inaccuracies I'll just avoid it like a land mine. Hilariously ignorant posts. The best one is that big pharma doesn't innovate. I needed a laugh.

MichaelKeller thinks that things like cod-liver oil will cure brain cancer.

No need for all this "fancy techno-stuff"

This is all on the CONGRESSIONAL CONSERVATIVES, who are sitting on the dead ass doing and saying nothing.

Sadly, the D’s are pushing out so much fake news that nobody believes them.

How much money is supposedly being cut in this specific program?

It seems like if the D’s were contesting in curing cancer;, they would have put more money toward it and less to DEI, illegals, Ukraine, transgender studies, and green energy.
