Doom & Gloom: Where will C.J. Beathard fall among Fry/Ferentz QB?

Iowa was 4-8 in 2012. Our first year under OC Greg Davis. This year, we turn to year 4 under Davis and year 1 as C.J. Beathard takes over the reigns of the Iowa QB position.

We fell short with Paul Burmeister in the 1993-94 seasons at Iowa. His bowl lost to Cal was far worse than Rudock/Beathard of last year to Tennessee.

Matt Sherman didn't get it done in 1997, though Iowa finished behind Michigan. Jake Rudock was 8-5, then 7-6 as a starting QB. Of course, he was 6-6 as a starter last year, since the Purdue win was C.J. Beathard's first and only start heading into 2015.

This is really a make or break year for Iowa, especially OC Greg Davis. Year 4 was fantastic for Iowa in 2002. No one see's the talent coming back from the 2001 team, that went 7-5, with a win over Texas Tech in the Alamo on the field in 2015.

However, who is going to win the B1G West. Iowa looks like they have questions, just like Minnesota, Nebraska and Wisconsin. With a 19-19 record the past three seasons, Iowa going 8-0 in the B1G is highly unlikely.

Iowa did rebound in 1995, under J. Hayden Fry. Could Iowa repeat at 8-4, like the Fry bunch of 1995?

Iowa was 5-7 in 1994. The QB position with C.J. Beathard should provide some freshness. He played well in the second half at Pitt and lead Iowa to the Big Ten road opener at Purdue.

Iowa has won three straight Big Ten home openers, under Greg Davis, as OC. This year's is the biggest test at Wisconsin, though the 2012 win at MSU was pretty darn nice.

The sum of the parts need to come together for Iowa to have success in 2015. Something tells me that we can't rule out the unexpected. It has been a while, since Iowa really put some things all together.
