This has been the most dramatic week in US/Iranian relations since 1979.

Last weekend ten US Navy personnel were caught in Iranian waters, as the Pentagon kept changing its story on how they got there. It could have been a disaster for President Obama’s big gamble on diplomacy over conflict with Iran. But after several rounds of telephone diplomacy between Secretary of State John Kerry and his Iranian counterpart Javad Zarif, the Iranian leadership – which we are told by the neocons is too irrational to even talk to – did a most rational thing: weighing the costs and benefits they decided it made more sense not to belabor the question of what an armed US Naval vessel was doing just miles from an Iranian military base. Instead of escalating, the Iranian government fed the sailors and sent them back to their base in Bahrain.

Then on Saturday, the Iranians released four Iranian-Americans from prison, including Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian. On the US side, seven Iranians held in US prisons, including six who were dual citizens, were granted clemency. The seven were in prison for seeking to trade with Iran in violation of the decades-old US economic sanctions.

This mutual release came just hours before the United Nations certified that Iran had met its obligations under the nuclear treaty signed last summer and that, accordingly, US and international sanctions would be lifted against the country.

I still think Iran has one body - er, person - to account for. But I think that one's a Jew, so what the f*ck.

The Saudis are shaking in their boots now.

This is going to enable the US and allies to have substantially greater influence in pressing the Saudis to get their Wahabbi/extremist groups under control, including those supporting ISIS.

I'm fine with that. Saudi Arabia has been a problem for quite some time.

It's just going to be a rather delicate/awkward balancing act for the US and the West to normalize relations with Shia Iran, a staunch enemy of the Sunni Saudis, while still maintaining reasonably normal relations with the Saudis.

Those two nations are practically never going to engage in civil discourse/negotiations with one another, and much of the terrorist activity in that region of the world is supported by factions within those two nations as they continue their unconventional war/tactics vs one another..

Yes, the outcome of this should be interesting to say the least. I don't like that it leaves room for sabotage. Not that sabotage was ever out of the question regardless.

From the article:

"Events this week have dealt a harsh blow to Washington’s neocons, who for decades have been warning against any engagement with Iran. These true isolationists were determined that only regime change and a puppet government in Tehran could produce peaceful relations between the US and Iran. Instead, engagement has worked to the benefit of the US and Iran.

Proven wrong, however, we should not expect the neocons to apologize or even pause to reflect on their failed ideology. Instead, they will continue to call for new sanctions on any pretext. They even found a way to complain about the release of the US sailors – they should have never been confronted in the first place even if they were in Iranian waters. And they even found a way to complain about the return of the four Iranian-Americans to their families and loved ones – the US should have never negotiated with the Iranians to coordinate the release of prisoners, they grumbled. It was a show of weakness to negotiate! Tell that to the families on both sides who can now enjoy the company of their loved ones once again!

I have often said that the neocons’ greatest fear is for peace to break out. Their well-paid jobs are dependent on conflict, sanctions, and pre-emptive war. They grow wealthy on conflict, which only drains our economy. Let’s hope that this new opening with Iran will allow many other productive Americans to grow wealthy through trade and business ties. Let’s hope many new productive jobs will be created on both sides. Peace is prosperous!"

Touche!

How about we take both countries out and take their oil for ourselves. It will be much more peaceful (after a few initial unpleasant operations).

Go do it then Rambo. Easy to talk tough when you're not the one who has to sacrifice your for to do so.

We don't have to sacrifice a bunch of lives. I can push a button just like you can. When a region act in the manner that it has, it cannot be trusted to be part of the free world. We could lose millions of lives over decades or hundreds of thousands over a few weeks. And don't give me that "What about innocent people"... You simply go after all military aged males because you know damn well they are already prepped for the fight against us.

This might be the dumbest most uninformed post I've ever seen.

9/11 ring a bell?
You the man natural, you beat me to it. Also we should ask him, what Saudi Arabia has purposely done with oil pricing and the billions they spend on educating their citizens to be against western society via Islam based teachings.
Also, I'm wondering if he knows Saudis response to us backing Israel in the 70's.
Your ball Aflackhawk.

How would this work? You think we have one of those Captain America ships that can take out just the bad males? What do you do when the other billion Muslims decide its game on? We have a lot more to lose than most of them. If you thought the NSA was in our business now, just wait till we make it their job to keep an entire religion out of our boarders. On the plus side it will make most every other problem look small.

If you believe the Sauds have been as big a problem as Iran you are smoking some bad weed

Saudi Arabia is where Wahhabism was born, and the House of Saud is committed to spreading that ideology. They can be as civil as they want to be outwardly, but they have played and continue to play a huge role in the growth of Islamic extremism.

What happened with Iran is more of a nationalistic revolution acted out through a return to religion. People hear the rhetoric and assume it's all about religion, but it's deeper than that. Iranian conservatives kind of remind me of Huckabee supporters.

Excellent response and I totally agree. It is much bigger picture than just religion.

Americans forget who Iran is. Persia is eternal.

The crazy thing is how many people don't realize Iran was Persia. It's at least half the electorate from my experience anyway. Most people just seem to know that "it's one of those Muslim countries in the Middle East".

That's how US political rhetoric completely misinforms many voters; to paint the Middle East as just 'Muslim', and ignoring the history and the different brands/sects of Islam is woefully inadequate. And, as noted above (and what I've posted here many weeks ago), it is mainly the Wahabbi brand of Islam, born in and supported by the Saudis, that is creating the problems for the West now.

Iran has been a problem for the West mainly with respect to nuclear proliferation, and not so much directly supported terrorism. Their non-conventional tactics have been levied vs. the Saudis/Sunni, Israel and Sunni/Saddam Iraq. It may well be that now we have eliminated the Sunni threat from Iraq for them AND have engaged them in delaying/eliminating their nuclear program, they could be part of the next Arab Spring. But that's only going to stir up the fundamentalist Sunni over there...

I think it's about time for you to just go away. Run along, little buddy.
