Drew Kingery

I think this 2023 guard from Indianola is really underrated right now as a recruit. I’ve said it before, but I’m not so sure he doesn’t have more upside as a college prospect than Pryce Sandfort.

I hope the Iowa staff is staying in touch with him, because I think he’s gonna blow up this summer.

Recent highlights
He was probably the best player in the Little Hawkeye conference as a junior. The conference has won the last 4 3A championships with four different teams so very high competition year in year out.

You can see a potential to blow up in his junior season highlights. Not saying the explosion has occurred but a good package from which to grow and improve. Good news since McC has recovered Iowa's in state recruiting we have a good chance of landing him if he blows up.

Have to think Drew starts picking up some nice offers. Maybe a slightly less athletic but more more skilled Eric May. A little Trey Galloway from Indiana to his game. Heady player that plays hard with a nice frame. Wouldn't mind Iowa taking a look at all. Good to have him in the back yard

At 6'4" - 6'5" and a slightly slower release he's not quite as good as Sandfort in terms of getting off tightly guarded 3's, but can use his quickness to create some space for pull ups or step backs. Didn't see a lot in those clips as there are a lot of guys out there that can make 3's and occasional pull ups or driving shots. So I generally look for unique skills shown that show a variety of shots or releases. His left handed hook in the low block was pretty notable to me, although as a likely SG in college not sure how often he'll get to use it.

Key for him is whether he is athletic enough to drive on B10 defenders to help set up his face up jumpers or finishing moves inside. That's why the Pangos thing is notable - guys at that event are a good gauge of whether he can handle B10 athletes, although B10 defenses play a lot more connected than AAU so it's even harder to get space.

Would Iowa have a scholarship for Kingery for that class? Seems like the sg position is well-manned with Perkins, Dix, and Kingsbury, and probably Pryce Sandfort.

The key question is -What is his interest in Iowa? Is he a Hawkeye fan, a clown fan or some other school?

Sandfort is way too slow-footed to play the SG at the Big Ten level. He would get torched on defense. And Kingsbury is a walk-on who will likely never be a rotation player.

Pryce? And consider that we are talking about Kingery, not a perceived "Big 10 level", whatever that is. There have been lots of SG/Wings of Pryce's size and speed in the B1G and they were plenty successful.

Yup Pryce. Watch the full games of his that are available on YouTube, not just the highlights. You’ll see he is very much lacking the quickness to play the SG position at the Big Ten level.

Put him at the SG position in the Big Ten this year and he has to try to guard guys like Jaden Ivey, Johnny Davis, Malaki Branham, Alfonso Plummer, Bryce McGowens, et al. If you think Pryce can guard players like that, I’m not sure what to tell you.

I don’t mean this as a way to badmouth Pryce at all. He’s an elite shooter and if Fran wants him, then so do I. But there’s a reason we’re this far into the recruiting process and Pryce mainly has just Iowa and Nebraska after him.

From what I have seen so far of Kingery, I think he is better equipped athletically to match up with the type of opponents I mentioned above.

I inserted what you said about Pryce to show you what you are saying about Kingery. And you question my opinion of Pryce?

🤣

Well, it’s all about match-ups right? Some teams he can guard the 2 and some he can’t. Just because you play the 2 on offense doesn’t mean you guard the 2 on defense. With Kris Murray, we have the luxury of putting him on quicker 2s and I think he’d be fine. We also play a lot of zone where it’s more about length, which he has. Thankfully, Ivey and Davis are gone.

watching Kingery play reminds me a bit of Jeff Hornacek with his play. He's very smooth with the ball, can get to spots and make shots in mid-range as well as the 3 but a very good passer and ball handler as well.
