Man, Seton Hall is exposing us big time. Our D simply breaks down w/ the dribble drive to the basket. And then when the shot gets put up, Seton Hall has someone in position to clean it up, if needed.

Fran/his staff have some things to clean up on the defensive side, that is for sure.

Fun team to watch on offense; defensively, this could be a long season, especially when we get into conference play.

At half time, here are points in the paint, which paints a bad picture for Iowa:
20 Seton Hall
10 Iowa

This needs to get corrected somehow - and unfortunately I don't think it is necessarily a teachable thing. It is indeed going to be a very long season if our perimeter / on ball defense on the dribble drive doesn't improve significantly.

They won't learn in a whole season? o_O This is one of the most common things new guys struggle with. Hey, we're up at half, be happy! :)

its too easy right now for the opposing guards and when they get past us and when we try to take the charge, we get called for the block

Defense, turnovers and FT shooting. I knew the first 2 would be problems but the poor FT shooting is unexpected. We have given up 50 pts in the paint so far. And most of it is coming off of dribble drive penetration from the 1-3 possitions.

I mean to say that you can't teach quickness. Williams, Jok, Bohannon, and Ellingson are just not that quick.

Williams is fine quickness wise, just isnt a good defender, hes servicable but could be good at somepoint. Jok has become an ok defender.

Ellingson and Bohanon look exactly like what you would expect, short and unathletic. Id rather live with the growing pains of Moss and Daily and just chalk this one up to a rebuilding year, which its going to be anyway.

.

Not quite there with you yet but I think spotting them some more minutes in the non conference might deserve a longer look IMO. Both Moss and Dailey are IMO better athletes with quicker feet from the little I have seen them play

Our offense in the second half was atrocious but for Jok. Bohannon was terrible that half and really took the air out of us at a critical juncture and we never really recovered. Hopefully they learn put this one behind them and strive to get better. The on ball defense has to get better as well.

I knew we were in for a long night when I saw who the officiating crew was. I hate blaming refs but this crew had me face palming all night long.

Defensively we will have no answer underneath this year, no shot blocker no big body and that will be a major problem The only way we can minimize that deficiency is play zone and stop the ball from entering the post.

The next is our lack of quickness on the perimeter and inability to stop the dribble drive. There is no quick fix so again they are going to have to neutralize the others team best option the one who is going to hurt you the most so they will have to help out and pressure the ball handler ...

The better athletes part goes without saying.

Im just afraid Fran has hamstrung himself with the Bohanan signing.

He doesn't look anything like a big ten point IMO and Williams looks like a guy playing out of position.

Those officials were really bad.

Stopping dribble penetration on D and getting it in O have been issues with Hawkeye teams for years. Who was our last elitely quick PG that was not either an offensive or defensive liability?

stopping dribble drive requires good defensive rotations and talk. Those do come with time but the lack of willingness to take a charge speaks to how defense is being coached imo.

shouldn't a team's goal be to shoot FT's at a 70% clip AS A TEAM, at MINIMUM?

We were just 19-32; so if we make 70%, that would put us at 22 or 23-32, which is 3-4 more points

the 17 turnovers were the killer; SH had 12; so that gave SH a +5 advantage in possessions (NOTE: SH made 5 more total baskets than IOWA)

Regarding SH's dribble drive penetration, which Iowa could not stop, from HawkCentral:

Compounding problems was an Iowa defense that struggled to stop Seton Hall from dribbling into the lane. The Pirates had a 50-24 advantage in points in the paint.

“I would like to have seen us play better defense collectively for the duration, but certainly in the second half,” Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said. “We went to the press, we went to a zone, and we just didn’t perform to the level that’s necessary.”

Seton Hall shot 65.5 percent after intermission, outscoring Iowa 49-39.

They seemed better at rebounding the ball. Or at least rebounds that mattered. They had guys several inches shorter that were out rebounding us. Simply by getting in position...

We will work on our positioning, that should improve throughout the year. Not just for rebounding, but defensively as well.

There is plenty of room for improvement. This game should give everyone a lot of film to study. Let's hope the players & coaches can make quick work of it.

Bingo..they havent had one. Need to recruit better. I know they have tried.

never heard of a rebound that didn't matter...we outrebounded them 9-29 (38) to 12-34 (46).

Bingo..they haven't had one. Need to recruit better. I know they have tried.

The Seton Hall Freshman guard that put up 20pts would look good in a Hawkeye uniform. I think the problem is with Fran...there are tons of quick 6'1 to 6'3 guards out there playing for other teams that can get to rack and shoot the 3. Fran is in love with slow footed guys like Bohannon and BradyE or big guards that don't have the quicks to match smaller guards.

College game is about having 3 guards.... Jok/Baer/CW just don't cut it for quickness defensively as a unit.

I know Cook looks great on offense, but I wish he would put some energy into blocking some shots.

I dont think he prefers those types of players. I think its who he ended up with. Lost a few recruiting battles. Needs to start winning them.

All right, since everybody is giving up on our current big men's defense, how do next year's commits Nunge and Garza look in the middle?

I mean to say that you can't teach quickness. Williams, Jok, Bohannon, and Ellingson are just not that quick.
No, but you can't teach length either. I think Williams has the makings of a very effective perimeter defender. Jok just needs to try harder and concentrate more. He is adequate, at times.

Yes he does. Hopefully he will win one soon. Although it will not be next year. So we are looking at 2018-2019 at the earliest... That said, I like Williams. I think he could end up being a good one. Once he learns the right movements to take it to the hole, he will be much more effective.

I like Dailey too. Just something about the kid makes me think he could play the PG spot, and do it well. He has the athleticism and some good handles. If he has the vision, that would be what it takes. Time will tell...
