I know this has been done before, but I'm too lazy to search and sift. Staying at The Chauncy DT Iowa City through Saturday. Looking for lunch and dinner recs close to the hotel, don't feel like driving. I can expense $25-30 for lunch and $50-60 for dinner. Also looking for a place to watch the games tonight. TIA

Are you fancy or not?
I go both ways, however I lean less fancy. A good burger/sandwich in a bar with TVs suits me fine. I went to Mickeys last night for dinner and would say that's my wheelhouse (the environment not the food, food made me shit my pants for 10 hrs). I'll probably go fancy Friday night for sure. Steak/seafood/pasta.

The Black Angel. The restaurant, not the iconic grave marker. It’s cozy and warm. Depending on the temps a lunch on the patio might be possible.

Nodo has amazing sammiches. Basta is pretty good Italian. Formosa has good sushi. Iowa Chop House if you want good steak that's not crazy expensive. St Burch for seafood (but nothing else).

Games should be on at most bars. Joe's and Micky's are my go-tos.

Encounter Cafe by the Hilton Garden Inn is good for lunch although you will likely wait awhile to order during the peak lunch hour.

If you want great food, go to The Webster. I believe it's the only considered Michelin star restaurant in the state. It's pricey but excellent the one time I went when I was back in IC.

I ate there a couple months ago and I was honestly not impressed, especially for the cost. Granted, I experimented a bit (turns out I'm not crazy for bone marrow), but even the pasta I ordered was disappointing. The service was exceptional and the drinks were very good. My chef gf (no pics) was, however, impressed.

Meh, it is pretty good. Not worth the cost in my opinion. No way he could stay within his $60 there.

Don't fill up on lunch. Eat like a normal person but get some IC OGs - Panch, NoDo, Hamburg, etc.

Stuff yourself for dinner. Pizza at Sam's or Pag's - or even Airliner if that is nostalgic for you. Go down to The Vine and pig out on wings or a burger. If you're one of the weird people that likes BoJames or Short's burgers (more so their fries)...go for that. If you're feeling just a little fancy - get the burger at Pullman, the buffalo chicken burrito at St Burch, or the bolognaise at Basta. If you're feeling mega fancy go to The Webster and have overpriced mediocre food but great service. Do yourself a favor and walk down to Big Grove and get some beer and pretty much anything on their menu that sounds good to you. If you want to feel like a weird local, go to George's and get a burger. If you want to feel refined, go to Brix and get a plate of meat and cheese. If you want slightly upscale and probably not what you went for in college or off the beaten path, go to One Twenty Six, Baroncini's, or Black Angel. For games, Iowa City insanely does not have a great sports bar scene unless you want to go to B-dubs (puke). Just go into any bar you see with TVs and they'll probably change it for you if they have the channel.

Enjoy. I'll be out on the town for sure a few nights while you're here. But I don't meet weirdos from the internet. No offense. It's not just you. It's every HORTer except @alaskanseminole. Sorry.

It’s already been mentioned twice, but Nodo is legit. Their sandwiches were a consistent part of my diet when I attended Iowa.

The Athletic Club in Coralville has some good stuff too. Big Grove never seems to miss, plus you’re going to home base for Easy Eddy.

Good post. I will avoid Big Grove, it's our go to when in DSM, so I get my fill of that. Will definitely avoid The Webster, not my scene. Did NoDo for lunch and got to walk by the US Bank ATM that spit out an "insufficient funds" receipt more than a few times. That was a trip down memory lane. Was always a fun walk of shame home to Benton Manor. Plan to hit Black angel tomorrow at some point. Tried to go today and it was closed until 4pm. Tonight I'm not getting back until 8:30ish so I think I'll grab some booze and either a Sams or Pags pizza (haven't had either) and hang out in the room.

I'll go over $60 one night and spend $120-$150ish and they will approve it. Thinking steakhouse for that though.

There's nowhere in downtown IC worth $150/meal - but if you must, I'm guessing Joseph's is the closest thing for your tastes.

It falls into the "it's fine" category.

Pizza at Sam's

Looking at the location, this was the only thing I assumed may still be the same 20 years ago when we were always in that area. Buddy used to lived across the street in the apartments and worked at Sam's. We spent many a night shooting pool and drinking beer.

I'd suggest the calzone.

The only other couple options I would suggest would be St Birch for oysters and Graze (I like their pizza) but most like their Chicken things.

It's not a must, I was just saying if it happens it happens in regards to the $60 limit. They approve alcohol as well so I imagine 4-5 good drinks and a nice steak would nip close with tip.

Last night I had the $5.99 burger basket at Mickeys then $50 in beer. Priorities.

Should have paid the extra $5 for the conglomeration. Might have saved your gut this morning and it IS Mickey's signature dish.

Graze is now Graze Gourmet to Go and over on Dubuque Street under a parking garage. Kind of a bummer.

St Burch oysters are $2 during happy hour (3-6pm). Best seafood deal in town along with the 1/2 off seafood tower.

I remember being on a stipend when we were smaller 20 years ago. We'd get like $65 a day for food from the client we were contracting for. We'd find a free breakfast at a hotel, cheap lunch, and then just go wild on dinner. I'm wasn't as much of a snob for alcohol as I am now, so drinks and dinner were always a splurge back then. I remember being in Akron, OH and eating a place where you grilled the shrimp on a lava rock at your table. My 25 year old ass couldn't believe what I was seeing!

Now if I'm the road I put it on the company Amex. I'm not an asshole about it but, I'll beg for forgiveness later if needed. Hasn't been an issue for the last 15 years.

That's true. A buddy and I ate there and the total for the two of us was around $600 with tip. That being said, my buddy had a $220 dry aged prime cote de boeuf which must have been around 40 oz. The whole experience was fantastic and worth every penny.

Those would be my picks. Warriors will be a tough out in the playoffs in Jimmy is in post season form. He's losing his fastball though.
Yeah Kawhi made mincemeat of him the other day. Was strange to see. But it’s great if we get to watch a healthy Leonard in the playoffs for the first time in years.

I always like Donnelly's, and then there is a nostalgia factor for Airliner pizza. If you get in your car and go to Coralville, I like Monica's, Tribute, and 30 hop.

Voodoo shrimp and the buffalo chicken burrito at St Burch - menu holdovers from Atlas - then cross the street for a couple of shot and a beers at Deadwood before walking back around the corner to keep an eye on the games at Joe's Place. Where there is free popcorn.

I liked Joe’s Place and the Column when they were single wides. Joe’s worked when they went to a double wide with the pool room. Triple wide and they are too plastic. They got too fancy.

I’m surprised that nobody has suggested that the OP might find what he’s looking for at the 620 Club or Studio 13.

Steer clear of the rooftop if you think Joe's got to fancy broseph. Now that's fancy!

They are both in the only footprint that I know them... well I guess Joe's added the rooftop which seemed crazy at the time, just like their now shuttered food service window. That said, often when I got to Joe's Place it's quiet enough you don't even have to visit or barely acknowledge the second and third sections. The one has the main bar, a toilet, and the popcorn.

Hardly ever return to SpoCo anymore, maybe once or twice in several years? Spent a lot of time there freshman and sophomore years, there was quite the City High connection at the time.

I'm old enough that all of my haunts are gone: Fitzy's, Union, Vito's, One Eyed Jakes, Hardee's where I got 2 double cheeseburgers and 2 small fries for $2.22, and Giovanni's. I am sure there are a ton more.
