Dudes with one long fingernail?

What’s that about? Does it serve a purpose?
I checked into a clinic at UIHC today and the clerk had one long fingernail on the ring finger of his left hand. It had to be half an inch long.
There is a guy I’ve known since grade school that grew one on his left pinky finger a few years ago. Every other nail is cut short except that one.

In the 90s there were people who would leave one nail longer to use as a letter opener.

I'm guessing this may not have been the case.

My dad worked with a guy that had one long fingernail. He called it his “booger getter.”
