125- A- good major
133- A- good major
141- A good fall
149- F Lose a match you have no business losing. BS doesn't deserve to make the finals this year
157- A good major. I hope he's ok. I give him a pass with the knee scare for not trying to put more points up
165- C- we need to learn how to get out from bottom
174- Ummm B? Lost radio so missed. I'll give him a vanilla grade
184- A- good major
197- B+ good td at end. Almost pulled a Wilcke and pissed it away
285- C- really thought we could win this going in

Recap BS lost and Kem maybe hurt. I think Tom might decline to participate next year.

Saying Sorenson does not deserve to make finals is over the line. He had a piss poor match but that does not take away from who he is or has done. F for the match yes but come on. He has had a rough 4 weeks and maybe needs to rebuild mentally.
this whole "fire brands cause we have not won a title, sorenson does not deserve finals " crap is so shortsighted. Entitled to opinions but lets be a little more realistic.

Other than that comment, I agree with the grades. Not a bad dual but nothing to write home about. It was obvious to me that it meant nothing to Iowa and was the season highlight of Edinboro. I like the IDEA of national duals and hope they come up with the right structure. If we lose Kem, my mind will change completely and want to trash the whole thing.

The past 3 years I've left the national duals with a stress headache.. this year is no different.

God I'm sick over that Kemerer match. (I'll now give my expert opinion on knee injuries) His knee was in the EXACT same position that I had mine a few years ago when I tore my popliteus tendon. Able to finish the match fine after the initial shock but hurt like a mother about 3-4 hours later, could barely walk. The unofficial diagnosis was torn LCL from the trainers but then the MRI showed the torn tendon. I'm going to be worrying about this until B1Gs. I really hope it was nothing more than a tweak.

Agree except for:
149: gentleman's C. Kid was tough and funky. Not a good match for BS.
174: C. MUST START WRESTLING IN THE FIRST PERIOD.
B for team--disappointed that there were 0 NF points scored. Right? (Excepting Carton's neutral fall.)

Brooks would like to correct your statement.

Coach Brands -- F - for not wrestling Va Tech
Grades are so subjective. Some of us give Brands an A+ for not wrestling Va Tech. But I'm sure that is based on feelings and emotions. Like if we've talked to a parent that told you Va Tech went back on their word and took a year of their son's wrestling away.

You deserve what you earn. He hasnt deserved it this year. Do I think he's the 2nd best 149 in the country? Yes. Has he deserved it this year? No. I guess we will agree to disagree

Lax, how long was the recovery?
I opted to go for the non-surgical route, as my DR told me that surgery on the popliteus tendon is not common due to its location and small nature, and there are just as many people who heal with just rest & rehab. My timeline was about 7 weeks before I wrestled again and 9 for competition. But in hindsight I wish I had done the operation, the knee hasn't felt the same ever since, and I kind of let myself get talked into coming back ASAP.

A few things Kem has going for him that I didn't... 1) Hes 10x better than I am. 2) He wrestles at Iowa, and thus is probably 10x tougher than I am. 3) Someone said Kem was wrestling banged up earlier this year, but he's so good we couldn't even tell. 4) He has a MUCH better support system of trainers and medical care there at D1 Iowa than a small D3 school.

I am slightly encouraged that Kem didn't appear to be limping during the handshake and afterward, i was paying close attention to him. Lets all just hope its nothing serious.

I can see the Iowa coaching staff being replaced and improved upon within 2 years. The team deserves better.

he's like the little guy goes in a bar picks a fight with the biggest guy there, makes him feel tough but everybody knows he's just not right.

Great wrestlers drop matches. Tom was pinned his sr. year and he deserved the finals.
Get what you earn? Yea, in march if he wrestles the right way, he will earn the finals then. Cant make finals in Feb at a dual. agree to disagree stuff aside, you don't earn or be eliminated from finals on a single dual match. tonight, he earned a loss. Does not mean at big 10 or NCAA, he can't earn it. What do you want? "Sorry Sorenson, I know you won semi's but the edinboro dual was so bad that you have to FF the finals. you did not earn it." I am all for high standards but agree or not, that comment was over the top.

That's exactly what I was thinking...ugh! I'm hoping there's nothing wrong with the knee, but he just wasn't the same after the knee deal (and he was dominating before), so I'm thinking we're in trouble. Poor kid!!

Or it was the first time he hurt a knee like that and it spooks him. He shuts down the rest of the match (a major btw) and after, finds out it is no big deal.

Well said! My only issue with his loss is that it may put him on the same side of the NCAA bracket as Zain, which I don't like to see. I saw him as a 3 seed going in, but now see him as a 4 or 5, depending on what happens at B10s. Despite how good he looked against Zain in the dual match, I just don't want to risk it until the finals. That said, perhaps Collica will win tomorrow, but I don't think so...

National Duals= F. No one outside of a few vendors and sponsors care.

125: A- He looked good, but still didn't look like his normal self. I think the Lizak match and that fact that he might be mortal is still on his mind...
133: A He'll be ready in March and I think he's capable of beating anyone.
141: A Really like the way he's looking going into the B10s
149: C Good come from behind to force SV, but was really surprised at how easy Lugo could take BS down. A tad concerned that others might look at the film and discover the chink in his armor.
157: A Kem looked great up until the knee popped...did nothing after the knee popping (couldn't even escape in the final minute) which makes me believe he might have something serious going on with the knee. Hopefully this won't result in the same scenario we experienced with Stoll following the injury against Gwiz.
165: C He's got to look better against these middle ranked opponents. Still impressed with his effort this year.
174: C 3 TDs by Ty Schoffstall before Meyer knew what hit him, and probably a 4th takedown by Ty that wasn't called...I think the iPad used during the review was fuzzy cause it sure looked like a TD when I replayed it several times..flat on his back. This kind of a start is what could send him to the consolation rounds early again...and I just don't think he can battle back through the cons and make AA like he did last year. He needs get offense going in the first.
184: B Sammy almost got the pin (looked good on Flo), but then put himself in trouble twice in the second period, and had he been wrestling someone in the top 10 (or Bo Nickal again), Sammy likely would have been cradled and potentially pinned. He's got to stop out funking himself. Still I think the only thing stopping Sammy from being in the top 3 come NCAAs is Sammy.
197: B or C He was probably relieved wrestling someone his own size (Reynolds actually looked smaller than Wilcke), but I just didn't think he looked that impressive against Edinboro's second string 184 guy. According to the announcer, Reynolds wrestled 197 because he couldn't beat Dakota Greer (seems like they have our problem with lack of depth).
285: B or C Since he's not Kyle Snyder, J'den Cox or someone of similar talent (at least not yet), I think it's going to be very difficult for Holloway to win against a ranked HWT opponent who will generally outweigh him by 20-50 pounds.

The "right structure" is easy. Go back to the way it was about 10 years ago. Maybe move it into December instead of January, as it used to be. Problem solved.

I cant believe there has been no mention of Brands confrontation with a fan during the match. Brands kept going to the table to question/challenge ref's calls, time on the clock, etc etc. Nothing out of the ordinary but because of the poor officiating(Both ways, I believe it was the same official for OK St), he was probably at the table more then normal. Finally, a Boro fan a couple rows in front of me yells at him to "Sit Down". Brands turns around as quick as a cat and yells back "Where do you want me to sit? Here?" as he points to the gym floor. The fan yells back "Yep!" and a second later Brands is sitting Indian style on the gym floor a foot from the mat. He probably sat there for 20 seconds, but I was laughing about it the rest of the night. Hawkeye's did a good job helping build a fan base in PA tonight. Wrestlers stayed available for longer then usual after the match tonight. Kids lined up getting stuff signed all over the place.

No mention of it because most of us not at the meet. Everything you see in person is not always available on the computer screen.

Thanks for sharing the story. It's one of the nice things about a board like this when people can bring personal experiences to share with everybody. Next time hurry up and share quicker. You won't believe how impatient some of us are...........

I didn't see Tom sit on the mat, it could be I missed it, but I was sitting facing the scorers table so not sure how no one in my group saw it or pointed it out. He was at the scorers table a lot though, for sure.

I was sitting in the middle of all the parents, and it was a pretty interesting place to be. It was cool seeing them wrestle in such a small gym. After the match everyone went down on the floor and waited for the wrestlers to come out, something you might see after a high school meet or bball game. After a quick conversation with parents the wrestlers walked around and signed autographs and took pictures with fans of all ages. By far the most popular person on either team, to my surprise, was Clark. He stood in the middle of the mat for 30 minutes and greeted everyone that approached him with a smile. It was pretty cool.

For my part, I got to meet coach Brands and talk to him for a brief minute and then had the pleasure of talking with a few Edinboro fans and a professor who is a huge wrestling fan. It was a good time and a great place to watch wrestling.

cool stories neo and papa, i think the people on this hawkeye team take a bad rap. from tom all the way down, most seem to be pretty decent folks.even saw gman holding a baby.
