Eggum named Head Coach

I'm shocked that they didn't open a national search. Give Eggum a fair shot during the process, but make it clear that you're hiring the best man for the job. They let Eggum inherit the job when he was on staff during the controversy that got the previous coach canned. Doesn't make a lot of sense.

Tom, Cael, Tom, John, and Brandon walk into a living room. What percent of recruits pick Brandon given name recognition, facilities, RTC, and current vibe on the national scene?

I have nothing against him, but this was not the bold move MN needs at this time. I fear their program going the way of Iowa State. Fighting for the 8-12th place position.

Was there a Rabbi and a priest with them too? Was the room a bar?

I would prefer a bar be present in the room, but I doubt Cael would be there lol. Going back to the point, I'd like to know from MN fans (not counting the new nebby fans!!) if they believe Eggum can compete with the star power of the other four coaches. As we know, star power is an important element in the recruiting game these days.

Maybe Minnesota can steal someone like Tervel Dlagnev to be an assistant (that would keep Gable Stevenson in State I think), otherwise I stand by my opinion that this was a big time missed opportunity.

I thought Popolizio, Heskett, or if they wanted to go up and coming assistant Mark Perry would have been much better options.

Look at their coaching staff and their current lineup. I think Lizak is the only out-of-State starter and I think their entire staff are alumni. In some parts of the country... that's called a cult. Or... given what's happened in the last year... the cartel might be a better reference.

As far as being relevant, you got about 8-10 teams that are considered average or better. That's just a fact of D-1 college wrestling. Being in the B1G should keep them in that range by default.

I would LOVE to hear the explanation from a Gopher fan how you can be in the hunt for a trophy given the current circumstances. One elite recruit per year ie... GS and Kirkv isn't getting them there. Right now, they got absolutely nothing in redshirt because they burned McKee's.

Over the last 30 years, they have been the most scandalous program in the B1G, AINEC. From the assault on the Ohio State MBB team to the Haskins academic fiasco, to the thuggery of Lil Ricki's team to the current football mess... and I'm not even going to address Lou Holtz's time there... one could argue if there was a conference morality clause... Minnesota would be a candidate for expulsion.

Nothing surprises me that happens in Dinkytown.

And oh yeah... Who hates Iowa?

You're missing a pretty big hoops scandal from the 80s that left them dressing football players to fill up their roster.

What I mentioned wasn't all inclusive! Did you see I didn't even mention the Xanax?

Stop being generous to Iowa State.

Is that because Minny can't coach heavyweights?

If you think Nelson or Kroells wrestling style is going to convince Gable Stevenson to stay in State then you are kidding yourself. Every advantage in the book for Minnesota to land Gable Stevenson and he is still looking for a way out. This hire did nothing to change that. Now, if they land Tervel as an assistant then maybe that changes.

This isnt against you at all and I know what you meant but just want to be clear that they are not robots. The Brands would be there. They are not these big fun hating guys who think we should live in the prohibition era and are the dad from footloose. They just don't like to drink personally but I know many coaches who have been on trips to Colorado etc with them where they have went out had way too many and had a great time with them. The Brands will sit and hang out, have a good time and drive them all home safe at the end of the night. They still like to laugh and talk believe it or not. They don't judge, they just don't like their athletes under them living that lifestyle if they are serious about accomplishing the main goal.

I also think Tom Ryan is the same and a pretty good guy. I have met him two sheets to the wind at a bar after they locked it up in STL. Had a fun short convo and mentioned Id rather it be him than Cael and he winked and laughed and agreed. I'm a nobody but I have some names I travel to nationals that do go way back with him so its not like I was walking around like Barney from the Simpsons just bothering him, because I know that will be next post. He gets way too much crap on this board at times. Good guy and much like Zalesky who believe it or not still has a lot of black and gold in his blood. But just don't tell the Buckeye donors that!

Even if you didn't know some people who go back with him I'm more than sure he'd still have that conversation with you, that's just the kind of person he's always been.

Gotcha. Who'd want a coach who only went 7,1,1,2 in his college career, anyway?
News flash, junior. The head coach is like a CEO. He delegates and oversees. Kind of like everything J should have done and would have prevented the drug scandal. You really think Eggum was that stupid to not know what his wrestlers were doing?
You're either ignorant or foolish. .or both.

Let me think........someone who wants to get better and is offensive. Hell I could teach stall riding technique all day and I never went 7,1,1,2.

Fair enough. Thanks for posting that. I was referring to the belief I had the neither of the Brands drank alcohol. I would think they would be hilarious to be around when they aren't seriously trying to rip your head off in a match.

MInny fans hoping to poach ISU ŕecruits. Can you imagine being that recruit?
Death by firing squad or lethal injection?
Tough choice!
