And it’s relevant now because history may well repeat itself:

Iowa was the only FBS team to have ONE quarterback take all the snaps in 2012. That was James Vandenberg, who struggled mightily that season. That’s the same year where Iowa scored 6 points against a stout Iowa State defense, lost by 24 at home to a Penn State team in the midst of the biggest scandal in recent memory, and lost 51-14 to a juggernaut of a Minnesota team.

Spencer Petras may be the only one spending time behind center this year too. And that’s a scary thought.

The problem then and now was the OC. Vandenberg proved that he could play in 2011.

Any troubling stats from 02?

That and gaping holes at certain position groups which has been a KF staple most years, especially receiver. If you would have told me back then that KOK was as good at it gets for OC and it would never get that good again I wouldn't have believed it. In hindsight he was a pretty good OC considering his control freak boss handicap

You’d be surprised to know that Iowa beat Minnesota that year. It was probably Vandenberg’s best game of the year. Iowa lost to Minnesota 51-14 in 2014 - Rudock’s last season at Iowa.

In 2012 Iowa did beat Northern Illinois by a point and lost to Central Michigan by a point.

With as poor as the OL played, I don't see SP being the only QB playing this year. It's only a matter of time before an injury puts him on the bench at least for some portion of a game.
