Tough to watch, for sure.
I think Brent had everything right in that interview except one thing, and he was very, very wrong about that one thing. . . . He said he let down the Iowa fans, which is hogwash.
Sure, Iowa fans wanted like heck for him to win the spot. All of us have a sick feeling about the fact that he fell short of his goal. But I guarantee that each and every Iowa fan is no less proud of Brent than we were the day he showed up in Iowa City. He's a credit to the sport, he's a stand-up guy (and I guarantee that a lot of guys in his position wouldn't have made themselves available to the media unless absolutely forced to do so), he's a phenomenal wrestler, he's one of the greatest Hawkeyes ever, and I have no doubt that he's a tremendous husband and father.
He hasn't let us down at all. He lost a couple of heart-wrenching matches. Sure, it was tough to watch because we all wanted so much for him to get that elusive Olympic gold medal, but seriously -- big deal. In the big picture, big deal. Brent is a legend in Michigan high school wresling history, he's a legend in Iowa wrestling history, he's a terrific young man, he's a credit to the U of I, he's a credit to the HWC, he's a credit to the state of Iowa, and he's a credit to his family. Sure, some World and Olympic hardware would be fantastic, but the guy has made Iowa fans proud over and over again. No way has he let us down. . . or could he.
Brent, Iowa fans couldn't be more proud of you. Our hearts ache for YOU -- not for us. The only letdown for us is that we wanted this so much for YOU. I'm disappointed, but for YOU. Still couldn't be prouder that you're a Hawkeye. And the way you answered every question with dignity and respect, for the media and for your opponents, despite the pain you were feeling, makes me all the prouder.
