Empathy and political affiliation

The greatest difference between political affiliation groups is not the extent of empathy, but which groups they show empathy to.

conservatives tend to show a lot of empathy to family and people in there in group, and are even more charitable than progressives for that specific in group.

conservatives tend to have more privilege though, especially classic conservatives or establishment Republicans, versus the recent surge in lower class whites over to Trump.

The biggest correlation is that the more privilege you have, the less empathetic you are or become (such as if you get a financial windfall).

my takeaway is that if we can get past this truly evil takeover of the republican party by fascism, there really is potential for people to come together and solve problems and preserve what’s left of our democracy.

Really fun to read and extensively sourced graphic story from vox on the above.

If you're conservative when you're young, you have no heart.
If you're liberal when you're old, you have no brain.
If conservatives were actually conservative, you might have a point.

The thing about trite platitudes is that they tend to be based on medians.
The thing about this trite platitude - it's been around for centuries and has changed groups several times. You like the current version because it suits your political views. You probably would have liked the first few less.

Really what it comes down to is which group is willing to make sacrifices. It is absolutely clear that the people with the wealth and power in this world have way way too much of it and they are willing to support anything from kleptocracy and plutocracy, to outright corporate fascism with proto civil war in the streets like we just about have here in MAGAland, or a tech-surveillance-totalitarian state like China.

The fact is though as we face significant resource depletion and increasing population, the wealthy will do whatever it takes to secure and expand their wealth and power.

The elites never want nor did they ever want any kind of real democracy, because what we’ve had in this country has always been a sham democracy.

until people in the lower 99, or at least lower 90% can work together, the wealthy will just continue to laugh and shake their heads at how easy it is to manipulate the masses and keep them at each other’s throats while the wealthy continue to steal and steal and suck everyone else’s blood.

No.

First of all, wealth isn't a zero sum game. There are millions of new millionaires every year.

Next, the people complaining about greed are completed fixated on material things, and who has those material things.

Then we need to dispel the notion of a real democracy. We have a republic.

Wealth envy is its own form of greed.

As far as empathy goes, it's probably true that liberals display more of it. Having empathy doesn't necessarily demand particular action in every circumstance. Having empathy doesn't mean I have to open my wallet every single time, or demand others open their wallets. Sometimes good intentions lead to bad results.
