DB move. Didn't Kansas dunk it up big against ISU in Hilton that pissed everyone off? One the fans tried to fight Bill Self? Karma is real and KU can suck it
Total douchbag move although no t deserving of a technical for just stealing the ball and dunking. I’m guessing he got the technical for his actions and words after the dunk.
Nobody tried to fight Bill Self. A fan who sits courtside was up walking toward him and yelling at him after the game.
But yes, that was another League Apology game. Jamie got a letter from the Big XII office conceding officiating errors in the final minutes. And a KU player did an in-your-face dunk after the game was decided.
What the Monmouth player did was a DB thing to do, but I'm not going to defend KU and/or Self. The chickens are going to be put on probation -- AGAIN -- and again, it won't matter. They're one of the most NCAA penalized programs in the country but continue to have this squeaky clean reputation.
KU does not have a squeeky clean reputation. Who do you talk to? Everyone knows they cheat. Everyone also knows that it doesn't matter.
You can't get a tech. for stealing a ball and dunking. 100% that talking after.
For the record, that isn't his wife. That's the widow of a longtime terrific Cyclone fan, Mike Lacey, who was a Des Moines lawyer. She, who is a terrific longtime fan herself, sits courtside, as does the guy who was yelling at Self.....and who definitely would not have gotten physical. They aren't related.
Incident was after the game, after both teams had left the court. As you can tell from the look at the stands.
It was a Big Monday game. Cyclones led by 5 with about 40 seconds left. Kansas cut it to two, and with four seconds left, Elijah Johnson drove the basket and rammed into Georges Niang, Both players went down as Johnson threw the ball toward the basket. Obvious charge, but no call either way. Absolutely impossible not to call SOMETHING. Ball ended up on the floor and Niang was called for a foul as both of them and several other players tried to get the ball. Johnson made two free throws to put it into overtime.
With a few seconds left in the overtime and KU up 106-96, Johnson -- who finished with 39 points, including 10 in overtime -- went in for a very showy dunk.
Cyclone fans were not happy campers. The dunk is what the fan was yelling at Self about. TV commentators were extremely critical of the officiating. Big XII office later sent a letter to the ISU AD saying "officiating errors were made and corrective steps have been taken."
I'm still pissed. As you may have guessed.
Ii realize this is a Hawkeye board. Please indulge me. Just ignore this. But on the off chance that someone is interested, the no-call mess is at 1:33.20 and the dunk is at 1:53.50.

That fan, I’m guessing a friend of yours if you’re somehow defending it, was a grown ass man being held back by security. It was ridiculous.

So that is a security guard that felt enough risk was there to step in the way and physically restrain the fan? Seems like a little more than yelling.
Would've been funny without the talking at the end, but whatever it takes to make someone averaging 5 ppg this year feel like Mr. Toughnuts I guess.
I've never met him, I wasn't defending what he did, and I agree it was a ridiculous way for a grown man to act. I was just pointing out that he wasn't trying to fight Self.
Nice. Is that when all their best players will be gone to the NBA and post season sanctions and forfeiting wins will not matter to thw team and University?
I'm sure the NCAA has consulted them to see how they can have a minimal impact on the program.
Did self say anything to the fan or was this guy just running his mouth?

I don't think Self said anything. The fan sits courtside -- that is, on a folding chair on the court -- across from the visitors' bench. In walking from the bench to the visitors' locker room, if Self went directly, he would be walking diagonally and wouldn't be all that far from the fan. What I was told was that the fan was yelling something to the effect that it was bush league to have the superfluous dunk at the end.
(Clarification: "Superfluous" was my word. I doubt that the fan used precisely that word in describing the dunk.)
It will be interesting how it all plays out. The NCAA literally has nothing on KU and if you believe otherwise you are only reading what the media wants to make a story. The FBI ruled KU as a victim in the whole thing and ordered restitution to be paid to KU. The NCAA wanted the FBI to share their findings and the FBI said FU. The NCAA tried holding a KU player out for two years for $2500 dollars his guardian took to pay for an online class so the kid could play high school ball. James Wiseman takes $11,000 from his current coach and people think he will get 9 games. Makes sense. The NCAA is trying to use KU as a big name to make themselves look like they are in control and it’s going to bite them in the ass. They have much much much more evidence against schools like NC State, Oklahoma State, and Louisville but those schools do not carry the weight as KU so the NCAA tried showing their power. KU has essentially said bring it and will sue the NCAA when charges are announced.
I'm sure they did, but IIRC, they didn't work any more games that year. I could be wrong. It has happened.
Nope just followed this all very closely. The truth will come out and it will piss people like you off that have only read what ESPN has written and not the actual facts. You will see. Been a lifetime fan of KU and Iowa sports so when something happens at either school whether it be a coaching search or this ugly matter I pay attention.
