After his mistakes in the match against Lyon and recent performances generally, I don't think Ederson's spot is very safe right now. It's hard to put too much of the 5 goals on Ederson considering there were 3 penalties, but still...The fact that Steffan was chosen in the League Cup matches suggests he's the leader in the clubhouse and probably has more starts in the very near future as things get busy. By far the best move for Steffan is being at City where they're going to be playing loads of matches against world class teams, and training with this club.
Still, it's amazing to think that in addition to Steffan, you have Americans on the top squad of UCL clubs (Chelsea, Man City, Juventus, Barca, Dortmund, Leipzig). This is a huge step up from just four years ago. It's unheard of for us to have fully half our starting XI at clubs of this caliber. MLS will always play a role in filling out the USMNT, but just the fact that more guys are able to get there and having to fight their way into the lineup on a weekly basis represents a huge cultural shift. All the non-European national teams are going to be showing a lot of disjointedness when they start playing together again next year, but they'll have LOTS of time together to figure it out. With 10 WCQ games taking place between June and November, I forsee the Gold Cup as being very much a "B" team tournament.
