“You’re growing up and you go, ‘I want to be on the front of a Wheaties box, I want to be on the front of a Topps card, you want to be on the Body Issue,'” Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper told ESPN’s Stacey Pressman.
Two out of three ain’t bad. He’s yet to appear on a Wheaties box, but a nude (or nearly nude), dirt-covered Harper will grace the cover of ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue, which will be available online on July 6 and appear on newsstands on July 10.
reported to spring training as light as he’d been since college, says he’s at about 8 percent body fat. After last season, Ian Desmond convinced Harper to alter his workout routine, focusing more on being limber and flexible than getting bigger. Harper told Pressman he can squat 405 pounds and power clean about 375, but there’s still room for improvement.
“I wish my abs were a little bit better,” he said. “God gave me a great body, but I think my abs could be better than they are.”
Cutting out ice cream might help.
“When I work out, I eat about six meals a day,” Harper said. “In the mornings, I’ll do six egg whites and two full eggs. Two meals of fish and then by the end of the night, proteins and greens again. I don’t care what nobody says, as much as they stay on track, they still eat ice cream and donuts. I love ice cream. I love donuts.”
