ESPN's Nile Kinnick documentary

The statue of Nile Kinnick outside the stadium named
for him in Iowa City, has Nile holding some books in
his hand instead of football. He was a student first
and an athlete second. He was a Phi Kappa Beta
scholar at Iowa.

Nile Kinnick was only 5 foot 8 inches which was
small for a college football player. However, he
was well-muscled and a superb athlete.

As a Hawkeye running back he had unique
technique. While carrying the football just before
a would-be tackler made impact, Nile would drop
his shoulder. Then, at the moment of impact he
brought it up hard. This surprised many bigger
opponents who bounced off of him.

Love this piece.

My first Hawkeye game...was the day they renamed our home... KInnick Stadium. I remember seeing Nile's Father on the field saluting the crowd. Had no idea at the time who they were remembering.

The statue is perfect ... A student first ... Yes indeed.

Probably nerdy here...but I teach American History and one our standards is Iowa History and significant figures. I showed some materials on Kinnick. I believe he would have been governor of this great state. We need more men like Nile Kinnick.
