There is an ad airing in Iowa City, maybe all over about this. It has a D, an R and an independant all saying they disagree on most things, but all agree on equal opportunity for kids and that means they all support early childhood education. The call to action being we should all question the candidates as they make the rounds.

Do we all agree on equal opportunity for all kids? And do we all think early childhood education is the path to achieve that goal? I'd be shocked if this issue really had universal support.

We all agree on an equal opportunity to get a voucher and to home school.

An equal, high-quality education for all isn't really on the table. Most might pay the idea lip service (although I'm not even entirely sure about that). But only one side would be willing to pay for it. And maybe not even a good majority on that side.

I'm not well versed on this issue. I assume early childhood education is code for public preschool? Is that right? I didn't know that idea was even mainstream D policy, let alone the rest of the spectrum. And while its PC to claim you are for equal opportunity, I bet most don't really want their kids on equal footing with all others. i thought it was an odd ad that didn't jive with my understanding of reality. But I thought I should check.

Yup you hit right on the head for daycare.

I was focusing on the equal opportunity for all kids part of your earlier comment and not the early childhood education part.

The cons have been pushing some studies that purport to show no lasting advantage for kids who got head start or some early childhood education help. Then there have been counter claims. I don't know the truth.

It makes sense to me that good early childhood ed would be beneficial. If subsequent ed doesn't build on those early gains, it makes sense they would diminish.

Personally I'd favor it.

What is the opinion of public preschool and/or vouchers for daycare in political circles? Is it well supported? I'm skeptical that even if we want equal opportunity for kids that spending on 2-4 year olds is the right investment option. I might better buy into this idea as a way to restore earning power to a two income family.

I don't think it is well thought of in Republican Party because some see it as paying for someone's daycare. I had fun with my kids at that age reading with them and singing the abc s. I agree on the 2 to 4 year olds.

No, but 200M to each of your children. But somebody will have to manage that money until they are of age. Hint, hint....

$200 Million for having a kid? I bet that would practically wipe out abortions.

Doctor to husband: Your wife and fetus are in crisis. We can save one or the other. Which should we save.

Husband (thinking): Hmmm, the wife or $200 million. Tough choice.

It would take a lot less than $200 million to wipe out abortion. I would say $250,000 would do it then we could spend the rest on child raising. :)

But Bernie is promising free college...

I tend to agree, but I'm all for public preschool (age 4). When I was young, preschool wasn't really a requirement, and I assumed it wouldn't be for my kids either. However, now that I have young kids, I'm finding that there's a culture around preschool to where while the state doesn't require it, it's assumed your kid will be behind in school if they don't have it. We read to our kids, and try to exhibit good grammar, work on counting, manners, etc, but do I want to test whether or not they'll be behind when they start school? not really. We're fortunate enough to be able to afford a preschool, but many are less fortunate and it's a real stretch for them.

So, while I think this preschool thing is mostly bs, and while I agree if you choose between investing in upper grades and early childhood, I'd take upper grades, I do see why there's support for public preschool. Plus that's free babysitting for millions!!

Yep.

And notice, now we're just haggling.

Not that the GOP would be willing to raise taxes to pay for it no matter how low the price went.

One more time for those who missed it:
