The good old public school system just another crap hole!

Iowa teachers tell Channel 13 they are so overwhelmed by extreme violent behavior they have reached a breaking point. They asked us to share their stories so people will understand what happens inside classrooms.

Ashlee May teaches second grade in Des Moines. She said, “Most people, I don’t think, realize kind of what’s happening. We get screamed at and cursed at daily. I’ve been stabbed with a pencil before.”

Police reports back her up. They contain stories of children ages 10 and younger throwing chairs, punching teachers in the face, and leaving bruises on instructors. May considers herself lucky. “In terms of what other teachers deal with, I think I’ve been kind of blessed because I’ve never had to go to the hospital.”

A teacher whose identity we concealed based on her fear of retaliation from administrators for speaking out told us children “get in the faces of the teachers.” She said she hears things like, “Get out of my way, you (expletives). You can’t do anything to me. I’m not going to get into trouble. You’re going to get into trouble. All kinds of intimidation."

I have multiple teachers on both sides of the family. None of them say that this is the norm. But feel free to promote your idiocy.

EDIT: Wait, were you educated in the public school system. Now THAT would be an indictment.

This is how it is, I know a teacher that states these stories are true in Cedar Rapids and has verified it at several schools.

What the OP fails to understand is that this isn’t a result or the fault of our public schools.

So one urban district victimized by inequality in resources and white flight. Gotcha.
Horsecrap it's happening all over. Teachers are quitting in my area like at West Delaware, Western Dubuque and Starmont. They are getting sick and tired of being treated like crap by students. Socialist progressive policies are ruining the public school system.

I have heard of incidents in specific schools in Iowa City and Des Moines, but not in CR. That’s where my family members work. Sounds like a load of hysteria. And the local Catholic school kids are bigger asshats in our neighborhood.

FIFY. Too bad the GOP keeps attacking their pay and benefits. That won’t encourage good teachers to stay.
So for a few more grand a year they will put up with violent kids?

Or are you talking about paying all teachers 6 figures like the free money crowd wants? Maybe get some body builders to teach.

You identify the ciokent kids and you remove them from the classroom.

I’m going to invoke the transitive rule here. First off, OP isn’t stating this as an opinion, WHO-TV ran the report. Des Moines Ind. Schools overall rank fairly decent compared to the rest in the entire nation. DSM is thankfully, a very nice city (we all agree on that). If this is being reported here, I’ll go out on a limb and say the same (likely worse) is happening across the nation in comparably sized districts.

Why even waste time arguing this isn’t happening Menace? Might as well move on to the why part of discussion right?

And the fact that resource staff has been cut that would deal with these kids in the past. The GOP have been horrible to public education, and then they use their own damages as fuel for privatization. That’s the goal.

I’m not saying there aren’t incidents. I’m saying isolated incidents are used to push the privatization and voucher agenda. Watch how much worse it gets after that. Louisiana did it and their schools plummeted to worst in the nation in nearly every metric.

You’re the first to use the voucher word in this thread.

I think the report is basically the teachers indirectly screaming at the parents to be better parents and look at the crap they put up with regardless of pay (pay them $1M each and they still shouldn’t have to put up with that crap).

FWIW, I’m a conservative and I agree that the voucher system is no bueno. Good intentioned but it does not work well on a large scale.

This issue and conversation strikes at the heart of society and what is wrong with us as people. We’re raising brats and tie our own hands together with more rules that restrict us from dealing with brats (hence the brats get worse a la this report).

There’s something to that, and reforms that need to happen too. I just think it’s a bit overblown.

The only resource staff schools need to deal with these kids are a belt and baseball bat.

Here here!

Vouchers are a great idea it allows the poors to send their children to schools that have kids who actually want to learn.. Do you hate minorities that bad?

It's not just the schools where stuff is happening. WHO ran 2 stories tonight. One at a Y with some big kid kicking the crap out of a younger kid. Then 4 arrested after some celebration in DM.

Kids getting a bit out of control outside of school as well.

The teacher I know has personally been verbally abused and physically assaulted. Teachers she worked with have also been physically and sexually assaulted all in the Cedar Rapids public schools over the last 2-3 years.

Vouchers are an idea only morons and for profit schools rally around. They’ve proven ineffective. They only pass the problem on to even more ineffective religious institutions.

Dude, I am not lying. I understand it is hard to believe, I have asked this “person” to come forward with the complaints publicly but they won’t for fear of losing their job or not being able to get another teaching job. The person I know pressed charges but the city of Cedar Rapids doesn’t understand what goes on in the schools which is evident in your non belief of my statements.

I don’t usually buy into “the world is going to hell” sensationalism. But, some things give me pause. When I graduated high school in Cedar Rapids, my school had two glorified hall monitors, no surveillance cameras, no additional security and no police presence. A couple of decades later, the same school has a full-time police officer assigned to the building, hired security and a network of cameras. It’s wild how much things have changed in only 20 years.

It's starts at home. These socialist progressive parents on welfare expect teachers and the school to raise their kids. No amount of money can fix crappy parenting. It is the parents job to discipline and prepare the children for school. The teachers should only have to worry about their field of study.

He has been brainwashed by socialist progressive ideas. He is a lost cause.

I really don’t get it, I have talked to some other teachers who are aware of the situations I describe and they all look at me like I am crazy when I say things would change if the town knew what was happening in their local schools. They tell me that there is no way that they can make theses things public.

Elementary teacher in one of DM burbs has had a brother and sister from same family arrested for stabbing someone with pencil. 3rd graders.

17 year old sister had to pick them up, mom was not around.

You do realize the graduation rate is much much higher at private religious schools and they score much much higher in SAT/ACT testing.

What should the schools do?
But the burden of raising their own kids back on the parents. Get them out of the classrooms so the kids that want to learn can.

I'm cynical but most these kids with no structure at home are going to end up in the system regardless, recognize it early give them ample chances and then put it back on the parents and remove them from the classroom.

So send them home? Expel them?
