2013-14 -- redshirted... posted a 9-8 record at 174 pounds while competing unattached... placed third in freshman division at Luther Open... recorded three pins and two major decisions.

High School -- placed runner-up at 2012 conference championships... qualified for 2013 Illinois high school state tournament as a senior... was named team MVP his senior year... played soccer in high school, and was a three-year letterwinner in gymnastics, competing on high bar and parallel bars... wrestling coaches were Brett Giejer and Daryl Luigs.

Personal -- born Dec. 21, 1994... son of Francis and Tamara Brantley... has one sister, Taylor Brantley, and two brothers, Christian Brantley and Juan Garcia... brother Christian wrestled at UNI... undeclared engineering major.

Yes. He was a good recruit and was showing well before an illness (menengiitis?) ended his career.

How do you Not compete for 2 years and be a letterwinner each year?

Gymnastics on high bar and parallel bars. Wow.

174-285 is a growth phase for sure.

How do you Not compete for 2 years and be a letterwinner each year?

This is common for upperclassmen who don't wrestle varsity. They're contributing in practice but not competing in tournaments.

Although he was a bit of a sacrificial lamb, Faraan did fight like heck and never gave up. The coaches were into his match just like any other, and the fans showed quite a bit of appreciation with a nice ovation afterward. Plus, he got to trot in with the starters, go through introductions, etc., and I'm sure his family was loving it. On top of all of that, he got to wrestle a national title contender in Carver. All in all, not a bad experience for a kid who just wanted to be a part of the program. I'm sure it will be a moment he'll never forget, regardless of the outcome, which was never really in doubt in the first place. And he still got to be part of a lopsided Iowa team win.

I thought the whole thing was pretty cool.
