Throughout your lifetime who has been your favorite hawkeye hoops player and why?
1. Michael Payne. This was the time I first started REALLY watching iowa basketball. My first name is Mike and I thought at the time it was cool he was from Illinois and wanted to be a hawkeye. As a kid I assumed every hawk player came from iowa
2. Russ Millard. I was a 6 foot 1 skinny center on my AAU team. We played Millards team and I had to guard him. Maybe 8th grade. He posted me up, pivoted and threw down a 2 handed throw down. My coach couldn't stop laughing.
3. Jaryd Cole. Just loved how tough he played despite being on some horrible Lickliter teams.

I just always seem to root for those guys so much. How about the rest of you?

Kind of feel like in a few more years Keegan Murray will be added to that list

Gerry Jones. I came of Iowa basketball age in '64 - '65 which was Ralph Miller's first year. We had a three pronged offense comprised of 6'7" center George Peeples, 6'4" forward Gerry Jones and 6'2" guard Chris Pervall ( a Juco kid ) and Jimmy Rodgers ( Football QB Matt Rodgers dad ). Jones was only 6'4" but was a rebounding machine. He could block out, jump to the moon, play D and score. Jones averaged 10.5 RB and 16 points/game for his 3 year career. ( you only got 3 years back then )
That first Miller team beat the # 1 UCLA, # 2 Indiana and # 3 Minnesota, teams in the country that year. We only ended up 14 - 10 but Miller brought back basketball to the old fieldhouse. Of course back then a 24 game, 14 Big X schedule was it. Had to win the Big X to go to the dance so this team never accomplished that but we competed in the league that featured maybe the best players at the time, Cazzie Russel, Lou Hudson, Archie Clark, the VanArsdale twins, John McGlocklin, Dave Shellhaus and Illinois had a couple NBAers too. NC games vs. # 1 UCLA and # 11 Kentucky had Gail Goodrich, Lou Dampier and Pat Riley ( yeah , that Pat Riley ). It was the groundwork for the undefeated Big X, Miller 6 pack...

Greg Stokes is the first player I remember watching as a kid. I thought Gerry Wright was the best player in the country. He could do a cartwheel dunk which I saw live when they did their barnstorming tour so he was pretty much a basketball deity to my 10 year old self. Really liked Reggie Evans. Erek Hansen is a guy nobody remembers but I loved to watch.

Andre Woolridge. Although a transfer (from Nebraska no less!) and being unable to go left, he was the man. STILL ****ing pissed they gave B10 POY to that Gopher scum over the guy who led the conference in PPG and APG (first to ever do it, if I recall correctly). He dropped 29 on Kentucky and kept the Hawks in it till the end in '97.

Kenyon....loved the D, and he had tough BIG opponents night in, night out....and he helped beat UCONN in maybe my favorite Iowa game.

Jaryd Cole....so much adversity....beat Purdue on Senior Day.

Gabe....most improved from Freshman to Senior.

Darryl Moore....walk-on to starter.

Haluska...made the switch to the good guys!

BJ. The Summer of 86, before his soph year, he actually played pickup ball with regular students at the Fieldhouse. I actually guarded him, but he never attempted a shot. But, he set his teammates up easily.

Go Hawks!!!

When I was a small boy, Steve Carfino could drop deep balls like no other. Every time he made one at a home game, I literally thought the PA guy was yelling "Steeeeve TooooorPeedooooo". I would run around the house yelling that.

Add Reggie Evans to that list for me, loved watching him play.
Roy Marble and Reggie for me. Evans was Rodman’esque in securing rebounds. I loved watching him grab boards.
Obviously, Garza is on the list. He’s a magician. I also loved watching Cook’s monster dunks during his 3 years.

Back in the day, when I was young...Don Nelson. He was a tremendous basketballer, whose exploits in his senior year are to this day greatly under appreciated! He went head to head with Jerry Lucas.
He not only competed well vs. Lucas, but Terry Dishinger (Purdue) and Walt Bellemy (Indiana) as well. He led Iowa to a second place finish his senior year...despite losing 4 fellow starters at the semester to eligibility issues.
Sam Williams was a close second, though.

someone has to have the highlight of Andre posterizing (i think) the msu player with the one handed between the legs dribble, blow by dunk. my fave play by prolly my fave player... just don't remember who it was against.
