Favorite hawkeye player

Back in the day, when I was young...Don Nelson. He was a tremendous basketballer, whose exploits in his senior year are to this day greatly under appreciated! He went head to head with Jerry Lucas.
He not only competed well vs. Lucas, but Terry Dishinger (Purdue) and Walt Bellemy (Indiana) as well. He led Iowa to a second place finish his senior year...despite losing 4 fellow starters at the semester to eligibility issues.
Sam Williams was a close second, though.
And just maybe, if freshmen would have been eligible, Nelson and Connie Hawkins would have been Ohio State for the B1G title.

Throughout your lifetime who has been your favorite hawkeye hoops player and why?
1. Michael Payne. This was the time I first started REALLY watching iowa basketball. My first name is Mike and I thought at the time it was cool he was from Illinois and wanted to be a hawkeye. As a kid I assumed every hawk player came from iowa
2. Russ Millard. I was a 6 foot 1 skinny center on my AAU team. We played Millards team and I had to guard him. Maybe 8th grade. He posted me up, pivoted and threw down a 2 handed throw down. My coach couldn't stop laughing.
3. Jaryd Cole. Just loved how tough he played despite being on some horrible Lickliter teams.

I just always seem to root for those guys so much. How about the rest of you?
Nolden Gentry

I'm becoming a Keegan Murray fan. He reminds me of Baer with his hustle and knowing how to be around the ball.

Yes but the real question is how does he conduct himself during the national anthem? This is so important...I trust you've taken notes.
Yeah I have and he seems like a fine young man. Hope that doesn't cloud your ability to like him. Thanks for asking. o_O

Bruce Sky King/Clay Hargrave
Ronnie Lester/BJ Armstrong/Ed Horton
Bobby Hansen/Chris Street
Jess Settles/Ryan Kriener/Jobo

Luka Garza (POY should be on all lists)

I was 12 and Andre Woolridge transferred in. Without a doubt, my favorite Iowa bball player ever.

After that, Darryl Moore.

After that, Jordan Bohannon, Luka Garza, Kenyon Murray, Nick Baer, Greg Brunner but not necessarily in that particular order.

Also, Jake Jaacks needs a little love. Not the most talented guy and I'll never forget that asshole from Indiana (possibly Michael Lewis?) throwing the ball off his face and Jaacks blowing a big, bloody snot bubble out of his nose afterwards but shaking it off like a Champ. Go Hawks!

Absolutely! Best player to ever step on the court in Iowa history.
One man's opinion. ;)
I had an older friend (who told me more than once) that Lester reminded him of Murray Wier...he was THAT good! Murray was just about 30 years ahead of his time as a player. He was REALLY good. REALLY good.
Whose the best? Who knows? It is very subjective. As good as Lester was.....there are those who think Lester was "almost as good" as Wier and mean that as a supreme compliment.

Just no. You're comparing Cary Middlecoff to Tiger Woods here...

Roy Marble - He was so smooth and could fill it up!

Andre Wooldridge - Just an amazing point guard. Great vision and ability to get around defenders despite not having much of a left hand dribble.

Ditto from me and a guy named Earvin “Magic” Johnson thought so too ! He wasn’t bad either but played for those other guys, with somebody named Greg Kelser.
I will always remember the slam Kelser made that seemingly started from the floor! Wasn’t Jay Vincent on that team too?

You are correct sir , he was a sophomore I believe as was Magic. Great final between MSU vs Larry legend and Indiana State.

Andre Woolridge probably my all time favorite.

I liked Kingbury and Kyle Galloway because I love a three point specialist.

CJ Fredrick is probably my favorite on this year’s team.
CJ's game is what I thought my game was in 7th grade before I realized I was not gonna be a division 1 prospect (took a look at the family tree again in 9th grade).

Steve Carfino was the first hawkeye I really gravitated to and remember. After that, so many players in the mid to late 80's were favorites from Marble, Kent Hill, Gerry Wright, Michael Morgan and BJ Armstrong largely due to a neighbor in WDM that used to house basketball players in the summers that was a block away, so got to play some driveway games with the players mentioned above along with some others. Ray Thompson was fantastic and wish that would have lasted. Really liked Val Barnes in the early 90's along with Settles and Murray.

Chris Street is likely my favorite Hawkeye of all time and it remains that way to this day. Dean Oliver is up there along with Ryan Bowen and Aaron White. Loved Kingsbury despite the off the court stuff. Garza has etched his place on my Mt. Rushmore of Iowa players for sure.

My top four would be Street, Carfino, Marble and Garza

The one thing I would say after typing this out is we can be proud of all the wonderful people that have played for the Hawks over the past four decades I have followed them. Say what you will about former coaches good or bad but we've had so many good kids come through the program that you have to credit the coaches for valuing character along with basketball talent, almost to a fault at times.

Luka Garza is the story of a guy who never stopped trying
to be a better basketball player. His work ethic is an great
example to everyone. He taught us that the biggest room
in the world ....is the room for improvement.

Bottom Line: Luka Garza is my favorite Hawkeye

I was born in 83 and my first memories were of B.J. and those awesome teams in the late 80s so he will always be my favorite.

By decade:
80s: B.J.
90s: Chris Street (runner up Val Barnes)
00s: Dean Oliver (runner up Jeff Horner; honorable mention Greg Bruner)
10s: Jbo (runner up Garza honorable mention Devyn Marble and Aaron White)

Kenyon Murray was one I certainly remember liking when I was young and the same goes for Mon'ter Glasper. That dude always was working hard on the floor.

In high school it was Brody Boyd. I was short and he could shoot from anywhere. Always a guy I loved watching.
Oh my gosh. I am not a great athlete by any stretch of the imagination but I would (and COULD) guard him at the field house. He would be up there with Alex Thompson and Mike Henderson often. Alex and Mike were cool but JR was pretty full of himself and not good.
You and I must be a few years apart. I also played with Mike Henderson, during the semester he was suspended. Dude was incredibly quick, and could have dominated the game if he wanted to, but he didn't. The guy I had several classes with because we had the same major was Adam Haluska. Very quiet, but very nice and very smart dude.

Haha, here is my CSB moment... I would say hey to Mike because he had class at the EPB right before me. I was running in late and it was a week before finals.

As I was about to sprint through the door, the door opened and who was it- Sam Alford. He was cursing up a storm and I heard him say "he isn't effing here again" on his phone. After I got back to my dorm I was telling my buddies that I think Mike was in deep crap.

Turned out I was right.

Still really liked and respect Mike. He was fun to play against at the Fieldhouse. I only saw him really try once and it was to embarrass JR Angle.

Luka Garza for me. Hardest worker I have ever seen. Never bitches at calls or contact and has made the absolute most of his ability.

I sincerely regret that most of those who post on this site were unable to watch Don Nelson or Ronnie Lester. The season Iowa lost most of their starting lineup at midseason to grades leaving Nelson and the “bench” to compete with teams lead by Terry Disinger, Walt Bellemy and others was so memorable for us old timers; lesson taught to our generation being- you got to play the game! Lester was simply wonderful.

Ryan Bowen
N. Baer
Daryll Moore

All three contributed to the game in more ways than just scoring. Moore was the best 6'1" (or however tall he was) inch-by-inch rebounder ever.

All time favorite is Steve Carfino. Surprised he hasn’t been mentioned more.

Others: Jim Bartles, Bart Casey, Kevin Gamble, Val Barnes, Bobby Hanson, Mark Gannon, Stokes, Payne, Andre Banks.

Chris Street...loved the hustle. Still gets to me when I talk about him.

And I would have to say Luka. I think he’s the best player in an Iowa uniform since I’ve paid attention so I can’t leave him off.

Ray Thompson

But maybe it’s time for a new favorite in Luka the Great Garza. #1 Hawkeye Hoopster ever.
