It's a matter of taste. Therefore it's subjective.
The thread title caught my eye and I thought it would be interesting to see some reactions. And unfortunately it didn't take long for the responses to deteriorate into "this guy sucks/that guy's an idiot". I don't like message board arguments because you have no idea who you are really talking to, but 2405 I hope you're better than that.
Morehouse: arguably the most respected UI Football beat writer in the state--rambles too much ( He gives more in depth breakdown than anyone on any show, whether it be commercial or internet)
Balbinot: Over a decade with the Hawkeye Radio Network and has a good working relationship with UI coaches in multiple sports and Athletic Department Administrators and brings some behind the scenes insight --according to you accuses the starting quarterback of drinking the night before and exam ( l listened to the show in question by the way and he did no such thing. The entire panel was simply comparing the different personalities of Ruddock and Beathard)
Guests (HR Podcast): Detract from the conversation of the sport (Many previous posters have stated they like the perspective and stories from those that have actually gone through the rigors of being a student-athlete)
You sound difficult, if not, impossible to please.
Jupiter, thanks for adding some perspective to the discussion. You nailed it when you said each show has it's strengths and weaknesses. It's good to have a choice. What would be the point if they all sounded the same?
Too many people today seem to fall into the mindset that if someone says something they disagree with, their first reaction needs to be emotional (ie. go flying off the handle) so much so that even if that same person would make a point they themselves would agree with just a minute later, they would never give them credit for it because they have already formed a bias that has clouded their judgment.
As far as the commercial aspect of the podcasts. It's happening more and more across the country. Not saying the ones being discussed fall into this category, but many "podcasts" are recordings of actual commercial radio shows and just slapped onto servers. Again, I don't take personal offense like some others if a business owner comes on for 3-4 minutes to talk about their specials. Odds are without their sponsorship, that particular show may not be able to operate. If I had fast forwarded the first 4 minutes HR's opening show a couple weeks ago with Kevonte Martin-Manley at Back Pocket Brewing, I would never have known about the free 6-pack of beer they were giving away with the purchase of a pizza. Needless to say, four of my friends and I took advantage of said special that weekend. As a poster mentioned earlier, if that's not your cup of tea...simply fast forward.
At the end of the day, these shows aren't going to change the national economy or foreign policy. They are entertainment. No need to stress out about something you have a choice over.
Listen to the ones you like. Skip the ones you don't.
