The number of hate crime incidents reported to the FBI increased about 17 percent in 2017 compared with the previous year, according to the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program’s annual Hate Crime Statisticsreport, released today.

Law enforcement reported 7,175 hate crimes to UCR in 2017, up from 6,121 in 2016. Although the numbers increased last year, so did the number of law enforcement agencies reporting hate crime data—with approximately 1,000 additional agencies contributing information. The report, Hate Crime Statistics, 2017, includes hate crime information for last year, broken down by location, offenders, bias types, and victims.https://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2017-hate-crime-statistics-released-111318

That's because in the past if a white guy committed a crime against a black guy it was "just" a crime. Now, it's not just a crime, it's a "hate crime".

Why can't a white guy beat up a black guy and not have it be a hate crime??? SMH

Exactly - but if it is reversed it is considered "justice".

Hmm 2016 you say. I wonder if there was someone giving hate inspired speeches all across the country in 2016. Who could it be?
Not sure why Obama did that, but it's his.

The FBI reported 6,121 hate crimes in 2016;xv however, state definitions and statutes vary widely and the majority of hate crimes are never reportedxvi, so these data underestimate the true pervasiveness.  Reported hate crimes in 2016 were motivated by hostility based on race/ethnicity (58.9%), religion (21.1%), sexual orientation (16.7%), gender identity (1.7%), and disability (1.0%).xvii Hate crimes targeted Jewish, African-American, and sexual and gender minority communities at high rates.  The FBI reported a 4.6% increase in hate crimes nationwide from 2015 to 2016, with the largest increase of 19% against Muslimsxviii. Cities such as Washington, D.C.xix and New York Cityxx have also recently reported an increase in hate crimes.
