Feds going after the Univ. of Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa is facing a wide-ranging federal civil rights investigation into allegations that its athletics department does not provide equal opportunities for female athletes, correspondence obtained by The Associated Press shows.

The Office for Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education is looking into gender bias allegations in 13 areas, including how the department counts participation levels, awards scholarships, schedules practices and games and delivers services such as tutoring, medical attention, housing and dining. A team of investigators will visit the Iowa City campus in April, according to documents released Thursday under the open records law.

Looks like the illuminati doesn't like it when a new power pushes it's way to the front of the line. We ought to resolve this by just going to a gener neutral campus. No more segregation. Everything goes coed.

90% chance it goes nowhere, and if the university was guilty of violating federal law, they should pay. I'm willing to withhold judgement until we have a look at all the evidence. That's what should separate us from the Penn States and Nebraskas of this world.

"Newkirk said the second complaint, which is being kept confidential by the federal government, alleges Barta has kept dozens of unnecessary players on the women's rowing roster to avoid the expense of having to add another women's sport."

Good.

This is one of the many problems with Title IX. Let's say it cost the Iowa athletic department $100,000 in "unnecessary" players for rowing, versus $500,000 to create women's judo why shouldn't that be allowed? It allows departments to remain fiscally responsible, to put that extra $400,000 into programs that fund the other 21 sports. Meanwhile no women are denied equal opportunity in education. Those "unnecessary" players don't like having to compete for playing time? Too bad. I bet the back FB feels the same way.

I say we start an all women’s e-sports team. It would be very cheap to operate and we’d have more Asian chicks on campus.
You win the thread. Just reclassify all competitive teams as sports. Debate, dance, sorority twister night should all count.

Honestly, if I understand correctly neither cheer leading or dance team are scholarship sports at Iowa. Not sure how making those scholarship sports and reducing the allegedly "extra" scholarships (I'll wait for the investigation to come out before I decide on that one, I have no clue) would change anything. They still pay money for those two things anyway, unless there would be additional expenses they are hoping to avoid.

Agree, for the most part. Title IX is supposed to be about equal opportunities, not necessarily equal spending. But the bureaucrats who administer the law tend to be wacko zealots.

Even the showers? Damn. I'm going back to college boys. ;)

You must really love girls running on grass with hockey sticks to say something so ridiculous.

The NAACP hates unions? I think you misread it.
I did, I read it as NCAA, got March on the mind.

Half of the football team is unnecessary during any one year. But they do become necessary because if they were there, then at least two women's sports teams would not be required to balance them out.
