First look at blackout uniforms 4:30 Saturday

Super lame to wait until Saturday. This will gain no traction just a couple hours before the game. If they want to build excitement, release it Thursday or Friday.

Why does it need to build traction? Is it going to bring in non-Iowa fans? It is sold out. The fans who are excited about the uniforms will tune in anyways. The team is undefeated. Is there a need for "more" excitement? And if so, are uniforms the solution?

Wasn't there a picture that was released that showed a little bit too? Or did someone create that on their own?

Probably a dumb question. I understand the stadium is lighted. Does an all black uniform make it harder to see the players?

It's just marketing 101. This is not just for the hardcore fans. It can help with recruits, excitement among casual fans, media coverage, etc. This is all about branding and building on the brand. Doing it on Saturday allows it to get somewhat muddled in the fog of gameday coverage here and elsewhere.

I think it is awesome they are keeping this under wraps, I would assume they are pretty awesome if they are building the suspense....of course not everybody will like them or be happy, but all blacks should look sharp!

Isn't this conversation and the one I had at the office this morning the type of buzz you want to "build your brand"?

You also get to avoid the inevitable backlash that they screwed it up.

"Marketing 101" is you want to be in the conversation and if it's a positive conversation even better. They accomplish both with this move. Personally I'm not sure if this stuff moves the needle in general, but I really don't see how it's a mistake delaying the release.

Now what they should have done is come out with alternates unannounced... That would be exciting.

Yet schools like Oregon and others make sure to reveal jerseys on non-gamedays to ensure that they boost discussion and social media metrics. The hardcore fans always keep an eye for these things, but the idea is to move the needle with casuals. Releasing it on say a Thursday as opposed to 4:30pm on Saturday ensures more eyes and discussion. Sometimes even national outlets pick up on this alternative jersey stuff. I get where you're coming from, but I think there is an empirical standard that shows creating buzz on a "slow football news day", as in not Saturday, can do great things for buzz.

Yeah, that's how to do it.
A few days before isn't really going to amount to anything. It happens so often for almost every team, it no longer raises an eyebrow as "news." Show up in the tunnel with something different, people would be texting their friend, neighbor, and grandpa. Well, maybe. I don't know.

Should be cool to see on the "Top Ten Highlights" either way.

That helmet is one of the sexiest things I've ever seen.

Because I will be hammered at a tailgate parry at 430 on Saturday and checking out this video will be the last thing on my mind.

Seriously, do it right after the wrestling meet gets out. Then you get the buzz (pun unintended ) all day and at the peak interest time, especially if iowa beats OSU in wrestling

That is actually a great idea. Show the video on the jumbotron right after the Wrestling meet.

Actually been my experience that it is harder for the defense to pick up the ball at times when a runner has/doesn't have, the ball on runs and play fakes.

You know.....I never thought of that though.

Want more people to come to the wrestling? Plan a reveal on the jumbo tron immediately following the wrestling otherwise....you don't see it released until 4:30 or heck, make it game time!!

So who is this interest for? The guy hammered at a tailgate? Why would you be any more "buzzed" about it at 1:30 when the meet is over?

My point is, the people who are excited to find out will already watch, already pay, already attend, etc. The people who won't do those things, like Toledo fans, won't simply tune in because they got an earlier glimpse of the uniform and helmet.

As you said, checking out any of this will be the "last thing on your mind." The only reason it is on your mind now is because you are already excited about the game.

This is even more absurd...you think people (as in calculable amounts of people) will attend the wrestling meet (that they wouldn't have anyways) in order to see uniforms they will see during the game anyways? Jesus, some of you are ridiculous.

Now playing it during the wrestling match sounds like a good idea, but not for that reason, because it might pump up the crowd already there, it will keep the excitement of those there for the football game later, etc. But to convince people to attend the meet? JHC.

You mean Nike reveals them in order to boost sales and product recognition. That has little to do with the football team.

That would be a cool helmet for an Iowa game if it didn't have neon green involved. if I ever see neon green on an Iowa uniform, I would likely vomit.

First off, I love our primary unis and how we never stray from them again.
That said, once a year we should have something different. Throwback unis are incredibly popular and the ones we wrote a few years ago with the wire pants, black jerseys, and gold helmets were really cool. If not a good year for throwbacks, we need something like this. I would time it with what I believe is the biggest game on the home schedule just to give our team and our fans a boost. This blackout idea is absolutely awesome! And the idea of the matte helmets as someone posted is very very cool. I think it's a big step for old school Kirk and our athletic department to do this and they deserve some kudos.

Really the only marketing here is if they would be selling replica jerseys at the scheels or gameday or wherever. If Iowa was smart they would have a huge display/sale rack of them outside the stadium. The fact that they have the blackout uni's is creating enough buzz. Capitalize on it to have them for sale before the game.

What about inverted uniforms? What if e just flipped the color scheme of our normal unis? What if we had black pants with a gold thick stripe, gold jerseys with black lettering, and gold helmets with a black tiger hawk?

theiowahawk continues with his crazy ranting. Dude never tires of arguing just to argue. The new Kilroy. Congrats.

Seriously, please take your meds.
