It appears he did have militant black activist (also referred to as 'black activitst hate groups) links on his Facebook page, though.
Also indicated in the police standoff that he did this 'alone' and unaffiliated with any group (maybe true, maybe covering tracks for accomplices).

This was absolutely a hate crime. I am as outraged as I have ever been about any shooting ever.
All of my lib friends are similarly devastated. There are normal, caring, generous Americans on both sides of the political spectrum. It's a lot easier to group people under any common label and pretend they are all as evil, stupid, biased, or unreasonable as the worst amongst them, but it's wrong.
I am embarrassed by the relatively few liberals who are radically ignorant and paint all conservatives as racist nut jobs. I suspect there are many great American conservatives who would be embarrassed by you.

If he got out on a General.........depending on what he did, it can be near impossible to upgrade to an Honorable.
There are no reports so far that he was a problem in the military....every unit has it's people who can't or won't make grade.
I think that "yet" matters here. 6 years and still a PFC? Is construction trades a notorious MOS for difficulty w/ promotion like the Marine infantry? Even in the Marine infantry a 6 year E-3 would be clear past shitbag, even with their jacked promotion scores. I think that we'll hear some pretty unflattering stuff going forward.

There are varying reports coming out about his time in the Army. That will bear scrutiny. Was he in fact sent stateside from Afghanistan for a sexual misconduct issue? Did the Army attempt to sweep an issue under the rug and just discharge a problem. I am not blaming the Army for Thursday. I am stating we will gain insight from any reports that may now come out. My suspicion is that he didn't have formal ties to militant groups, and was easily swayed by what he saw on the internet. My suspicion is that he had some form of mental illness. Not severe enough that he stood out, but enough to keep him from forming appropriate bonds or feeling compassion for others.

I always preferred the USAF way of promotion. Jr enlisted, it's about the time you put in. Once you hit NCO(E4 and up)......you have to take a written test showing you're worthy of promotion by showing you have a good grasp of your career field and USAF/Military history. Then still promotion is given out based on time in grade and your test score. So if you scored well and pass, but haven't put in your time........those who have will be promoted before you, you have to wait in line to put on your stripes. Also, if you have a small career field, there are only so many slots for promotion to the rank you are going for........so even if you score very well, you might have a long wait to put on your stripes until a slot comes open.
SSG T might be better equipped to answer this......but I believe everyone in the Army receives firearms training. Because even construction specialists need to know how to defend their positions when attacked and in Afghanistan do get called up to perform patrols. I know the Army is different...but the USMC? EVERYONE is a rifleman first........
What were the enlistment standards when Johnson went in? Didn't the Army have to lower their standards during the Iraq War? Some of you are pointing out that he didn't progress during his time in the service, so I am wondering if he ever would have gotten in during an era of higher standards?
