Food waste

Why should I care about this? MSNBC is running ads and doing specials all about ways to reduce food waste. They claim in the ads that 40% of food is wasted in America. I don't personally waste much food at all. I can't remember the last time I tossed food out, but I'm cheap. So why should I much care that you do over buy and toss or that the restaurant tossed out their salad?
