Football players & twitter

A bit of a non-issue, but does anyone know the exact reasoning football players can't tweet? I had been under the assumption that they weren't supposed to use Twitter at all, for anything.

I've noticed, though, that while they don't send tweets, they do still "favorite" other peoples' tweets.

I always believed Ferentz implemented the rule as Twitter can be a very easy way for players to see criticism & noise from the outside. That's definitely not the case if they're still active on the site.

It's because college kids are idiots and he's protecting them from themselves. Nothing good can come from a players tweet so better to just outlaw it

The same reason he doesn't let freshman speak to the media; Kids are dumb and do dumb things when no one is watching.

I am so happy smartphones weren't around when I was in college.

I don't remember when he said it but didn't Kirk say he was thinking of revisiting this rule after the season? A lot of the players now had Twitter before they came to Iowa and just stop being active on it while here. If a recruit doesn't pick Iowa because he can't tweet while he is here then maybe he isn't a recruit you want anyways.

A lot of times an active Twitter profile is how we get confirmation a guy has left the program.
