A former doctor at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has been arrested in connection with assaults he is accused of committing during his time at the hospital a year ago.
According to UI police criminal complaints, several incidents occurred while 50-year-old Foad Elahi was employed in the UIHC’s Department of Anesthesia. Police said one incident occurred sometime between August and September 2014. During that encounter, the alleged victim brought Elahi mail into his office as part of her regular duties.
Police said once the door was shut, Elahi hugged the victim and put his hands on her backside without her permission. The victim told police Elahi’s actions “gave (her) chills and (she) didn’t like it.” Elahi had physical control of the victim during the encounter and confined her in his office. The woman had to shove Elahi away to get out of the office, police said.
Another incident occurred sometime between September and October 2014, police said. Police said Elahi asked a woman to follow him down a hallway. Elahi then began “feeling up” the woman, according to criminal complaints. Police said the victim told Elahi they could get in trouble so that he would stop. Elahi just laughed and the woman had to push him away, police said.
The woman “felt insulted, offended and nervous” about this counter, police said.
Elahi has been arrested and faces one count of false imprisonment, a serious misdemeanor, and two counts of simple assault. A July 2014 faculty directory lists Elahi as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Anesthesia. However, he is not included on the department’s current faculty page.
If convicted, Elahi could spend more than a year in jail.
