Looks like they should run away with the 3A championship this year. They looked tough in Council Bluffs this weekend. They have a good shot at 3 champs (Teske, Lara and Bennett). The younger Lara wrestled a tight 9-7 decision loss to Nelson Brands.

Their 126lb, Lockner, only lost once to #1 McGwire Midkiff 5-4. Their 106lb, Ayala, finished third only losing to a top Kansas wrestler.

It wouldn't be surprising to see them have 4-5 going on Saturday night in the finals.

Any team that has a kid named McGwire Midkiff, HAS to be the favorite for something! ;)

Pretty bold statement. Neither IA Wrestle nor the Predicament have them in the top two. Valley and SEP have strong teams.

Are those dual or tournament rankings? Do they do both?

Those are state tournament rankings. I think eventually IA Wrestle does both but I don't believe The Predicament does.

Across the two rankings, FD has 5-6 rated kids while the others have 8-11.

Dual rankings should be out next week (as in 8-10 days). New individual/tourney rankings should be out this week. I believe Tuesday

IAwrestle's ranking shouldn't even be in the conversation. Their latest set don't even have Ayala rated in the top 10 (5th in Predicament ) and he just finished 3rd in the stacked Council Bluffs Classic.

Perhaps it is a bold prediction but I think Fort Dodge has a lot of sure things at the lower weights and I believe wrestlers like Dorian Johnson and Keaton Dornath will be a factor at state who currently aren't ranked.

You also see vast improvement from Cayd Lara who gave Brands all he could handle and Bennett flipped the script on Biscoglia, winning 3-2.

Showed last year that 2 champs and 3rd could get you a third place finish in some classes...

It will. We're talking about first though.

CP: Certainly FD is in the convo. Wasn't trying to say otherwise. The "run away with" comment was more my focus.

I admit maybe that was an exaggeration on my part. I'll just leave it at this: if I picked my team placement in the tournament today, I like FD, DMV and SEP in that order.

I thought they were going to last year too, but SEP does SEP things.. they are always so deep and put a couple of kids I've never heard of on the podium.

Just a heads up. Very first sentence on rankings state.

"Please note: IAwrestle does not rank freshman in the first set nor wrestlers who will miss significant time, due to eligibility, injuries etc."

Fort Dodge will have to make up ground with bonus points. Not deep enough up and down the lineup to top Southeast Polk, otherwise. Their lineup through the first 5 weights though is arguably the best in the state.

The struggle with schools like theirs is at the heavier weights. Btw, a fun fact while I was looking some things up on the heavier weights across Iowa HS wrestling, 8 of the last 10 heavyweight champions have come from eastern Iowa schools (3 from W-SR). I'd consider Marshalltown as central Iowa though it is a ways east of I-35.

I think it depends on a couple of factors. If SE Polk or Valley have several of their guys outperform their rankings again they'll certainly be tough to beat. That happened last year where Fort Dodge had one guy fall off (K. Cook - ranked 3rd, didn't place) while SEP had a couple of guys come out of nowhere (Jones - unranked, finished 6th; Padavich - 9th, finished 4th).

Fort Dodge loses points scorers (S. Cook-1st, K. Cook-DNP, Egli-5th and Detmering-DNP)
Fort Dodge gains point scorers (Ayala - projected 3rd-6th, Franklin & Dornath - TBD)
*Franklin & Dornath both finished top 10 at the 39 team field, CB Classic, and should be threats to score points at state. Not enough matches in to reasonably project where they would fall.
Reasonable potential to improve on 2015 placement (Bennett - 3rd, will be ranked 1st in new rankings; Lockner - 8th, currently ranked 6th; C. Lara - 8th, currently ranked 4th)

SEP loses point scorers (Jones-6th; Padavich-4th; Andersen-2nd; Ramirez-3rd)
SEP gains point scorers ( Ames-6th; DeVos-1st; Brand-9th; Babcock-9th)
Reasonable potential to improve on 2015 placement (Barnes - 3rd, ranked 1st; Perrien - 3rd, ranked 2nd)

Bracket placement...
Without seeding, #2 ranked SEP wrestlers (Lendt, Perrian & Brown) could end up on the same side as Lara, Teske and Midkiff.
The same could potentially happen again with Bennett-Biscoglia although Bennett as of now will be ranked #1.

How do the low seeded guys do....
Last year this made a big difference with K. Cook (FD) not placing and Jones and Padavich (SEP) finishing in the top 6. If Brand and Babcock, both currently ranked 9th, can follow suit, FD would have a tough hill to climb. Likewise, if Franklin and Dornath step up and score points for FD, it will help balance their stout lower weight lineup.

Bonus points....
FD will need to improve on their 2015 bonus point scoring
Teske only recorded 1 fall; Bennett had 2 decisions in the consolation bracket, Lockner only had 1 bonus point match

I didn't cover Valley but that doesn't mean I'm ignoring them. They probably have the best depth and will be a factor in the duals and the tournament. One odd thing, The Predicament lists them with 11 ranked wrestlers and I went through the list 3 times and can only count 10. They don't have a ranked wrestler now at 113,132,170 and 285.

seeding doesn't happen, but you can see where they would end up in their brackets when it's announced.

Fort Dodge is District #3
SEP is District #1
Valley is District #7

My question would be how many move in's does Fort Dodge have, vs. WDMV, and SEP? I'm not against transferring, accepting transfers, or the wrestler, or team benefitting from it. I'm just impressed what FD is doing with home grown talent, especially in today's day & age.

Polk has one transfer in DeVos who transferred from Waukee, after a bad situation there involving Biscoglia.

None that I'm aware of this year although in past seasons they too like others have benefitted from this. Chase Holmgaard comes to mind, who wrestled his first two years at Prairie Valley.

It is nice for SEP to plug #1 DeVos into their lineup this season.

Perrin quit wrestling. I'm not sure why he did, but a big loss for SEP. FD's studs are very good. Cayd Lara could be a top 2 at 152.

Teske had 1 fall, 1 tech, 1 major, 1 dec. Bennett had 3 falls, 1 tech, 1 dec. 26.5 and 21.5 points respectively, hard to ask for much more out of those two.

A lot of heavy hitters on Valley. IF they wrestle to their rankings will be tough to beat. 4 kids ranked #1 nd 2 #2.

That's probably true from Bennett's standpoint although he has a very realistic chance to improve his placement point with a 2nd or 1st finish.

I don't think it's unrealistic for Teske to improve on a fall, TF, MD and dec. He has the ability to turn anyone in the state at his weight as he just demonstrated with West.

Lockner should improve on his 1 bonus point match and Cayd Lara should easily improve his bonus point and placement sum.
