Fran’s BTT record

We're due for a run. Alford won 2 BTT titles. Then Lickliter managed to lose in 1st game to Michigan 3 years in a row. I thought Fran would be an improvement, and instead Fran usually was good for a 1st round loss to a lower seed. Lack of success come BTT time and NCAA tourney time has been the real Fran Fade...his March record sucks.

The BTT win was good though and it was built on Keegan Murray going off vs Indiana and a JBO bank shot 3. You cant count on Bank'ed 3's as your post season win strategy.

This is the year then . We are the lowest seed so took care of that problem!

Maybe someone else has pointed this out, but Fran has won consecutive postseason games only two times in the decade and a half he's been our coach.

The 2013 NIT (runner-up)
The 2022 BTT (won it)

That's it.

All other years it's been either 1 win or opening round loss.

Now that I look at Fran's coaching record, I think this holds true for his entire career.

That's absolutely incredible.

Reason 267943245 that this HAS to be his last year.

Although, if Barta was around, he'd say 2022 was just 3 years ago. That deserves an extension.

Actually I'm assuming he won conference tournaments at Siena, at minimum, so my last statement about this being for his entire career is probably not quite true, but this definitely is a fact for his Iowa career.

Fran in the postseason = fail. He's had issues even stringing together consecutive NIT wins.

You are correct! But go be a fan of Duke if you don't like it! Ha

I would like to do everyone here the disservice of bringing up the one Fran era postseason game which really sticks in my craw:

NCAA tourney game versus Oregon.

From the opening tip, it looked like teams from 2 different levels of basketball out there.

Looked like Oregon was division 1, and Iowa was div 2 or div 3 or Juco.

Yes I was thinking the same thing! Just built differently. When the last time we had a lineup of guys that had Reggie Evans and Andre Woolridge like bodies!

This stat is totally deceiving. Here's how it should be:
His first 4 years were all Lickliter's fault so that shouldn't count.
2015 and 2016 were already locked for NCAA so they didn't matter
2017 and 2018 were rebuilding years so they shouldn't count
2019 they went 1-1
2020 was covid year
2021 they went 1-1
2022 they won it (4-0)
2023 and 2024 were/are rebuilding years

So really if you take away all the bad stuff it should be more like 6-2, and even then the 2 losses were probably the refs fault.

2017 and 2018 were rebuilding years so they shouldn't count

"The new contract was signed the day after Iowa fell 79-55 at Virginia Tech. Iowa has posted an 11-11 overall mark and 2-7 record in the Big Ten this season."

Raised some eyebrows. This is from January 2018.

Barta was so freaking bad at his job. Handing out raises and extensions for mediocrity.

If you are ok with mediocrity... at least try to go cheap and give Fran an extension but not a raise. What was the worst that would happen? He decides to leave? How would you ever replace such amazing mediocrity?

They signed an extension in April 2017, and kept it a secret as long as they could, until Dochterman used FOIA to discover and publish it in January 2018.

WTF is wrong with Barta. And Fran to go along with it.

I did research this. Fran is 7-13 in BTT. 4 of those wins came in the championship run! 3-13 before that! This is one more reason that he needs to go! More than likely another 1 and done come Wednesday!
Actual Iowa Coach's B1G tournament records:
Alford 13-6
McCaffery 9-12
Davis 0-2
Lickliter 0-3

Alford was the master of the March Situation and has the 3rd best career record among B1G coaches behind Matta (23-9) and Self (5-2).

Yup, I think back to this game a lot - it was clearly Men v. Boys. It was almost as if our players were moving in slow motion compared to theirs….😬

Iowa has been feast or famine in the BTT.

3 titles, twice winning four games in four days.
1 runner up, where they played four games in four days.

I think 2005 was the only other year that they won at least 2 games. Many seasons of 1 and done.

Ah yes. Reminds me of the days when Todd would say he was packing 4 suits for the BTT at his press conference. Always thought he must be hitting up some nice restaurants in Indy

But I guarantee you Banked, that any team that wins any tourney will rely on blind luck to win at least one game during their championship run. It’s the nature of sports and competition.
