Fran in Sioux Falls today, 7' sophomore

Interesting. Please give us key updates as you learn them.

A lot of Iowa fans up there I believe…

Watched his film from May.

Long and lanky - listed at 7'0" with 7'0" wingspan so if true his arms aren't especially long. On film his wingspan looks more like he would be +3 or 4" above his height, so who knows.

Not overly athletic but may be growing into his body. Vertical was listed as 28" which would be fairly good for a 7 footer, but I don't see that on film. Most of his blocks look more like a 20" vertical with just a lot of length attached.

Can get pushed around when posting down low or defending the post - saw this several times. In HS his length makes up for it but in the B10 he'll need 15-20 lbs and a lot of lower body, core and upper body strength to hold his position. However, as a Soph he handles the physicality fairly well and has solid, basic post moves.

What I liked most is that his 3 point shot looks very quick, fluid and accurate. Had a stepback and also had a midrange jumper on a pull up. So his face up game is very good and probably the part I like the most - stretch 5 potential.

But in the post, while he lacks the complex moves that Garza has, he did show me some 1 handed finishes with either hand after putting his near shoulder into the defender. A 10 foot baby hook with his right, and a 5 foot flip shot with his left. Those are key shots you need when you start facing guys your own size.

He looks a bit gangly yet when running and so I think he will be a skilled big for sure, but his upside might depend on if he gains another 1-2" in height, adds the necessary strength, and starts to be a bit more fluid in his movements.

Looks like a Top 250 kid to me with upside into the Top 100. Will be very skilled either way, just depends on if he can score in the post, run the court, and defend more athletic bigs.

Definitely a kid to keep an eye on.

i'd assume those are freshman highlights against varsity players. He looks pretty damn good.
My thoughts exactly. This "kid" is still growing but has good basketball instincts for a 7-footer. He can shoot it and seems to have a little bit of a mean streak, i.e., not afraid to stick his head in there and fight for a rebound. I would like to hear from anyone who could catch a complete game of his.

Thanks for the info on JT Rock, good stuff, now just have to wait and see how everything about him develops and if Fran and JT like what each other can do for each other in the future. Sounds like Fran doing his job in hopes of it paying off down the road. Tough job being a Nostradamus but I’m sure when it works out like it did with a Luka Garza , it’s pretty satisfying.
Not soon enough for me though time will shift back to the here and now. Win or [(not win enough) ,(I personally think we win a lot this year)] , I just want to say I respect the effort of the coaching staff, seeking out, making early contacts, envisioning a kids future, talking to him about his strengths, things to work on and what U of I can offer him . Then in many cases a kid changing his mind at the moment he has to decide where to go . Only for him to decide to go for the new bright new shiny object that shows up on his doorstep a day , week or so before decision day. Then you just have to say crap, tough day and start all over again . Whatever we’ve all done for a job or career, we all can understand a tough day, SMH 🤦. Hopefully good days ahead this year and for Fran, JT Rock, The Iowa Hawkeyes, and everyone here. Thanks again for the updates.

Plays at Lincoln HS, know him and people he plays with, he's friends with my son too who plays at a rival school. He works at it, needs weight and strength but he's going to be something in 2 years let alone 7. I told him on Sunday to go to Iowa, he said his preacher tells him that too, so that's good!
There is a 7 ft sophomore at Council Bluffs St. Albert's. He just transferred there last year. Iowa rules would not let him play so he played jv bball. He's been working with a former D1 post player and is very athletic so says the person coaching him. Will need to look for him this year when bball starts.

Agree almost totally with DanPH's analysis. Really nice offensive skills, and uses either hand. Not nearly strong enough for the B1G, but has a couple of years to grow into his body and fill out. Actually moves pretty well for a lanky kid, who has yet to mature. Definitely worth Fran's attention, and could become a very highly recruited center.
