Fran says CJ & Connor (HIP SURGERY to come) have been dealing with more injuries than we know

Just now watching a replay of the game and if Connor, Fredrick, and JBO, if any of those 3 were hurting either Iowa has the greatest medical staff or Fran is making excuses for his players failures. None of the 3 showed any signs of being hampered by any injuries that can be detected. All were moving fluidly and effortlessly on the floor and if Fran did know that any of them were being hampered by injury and played them, depending on the severity he should have know better.
This was a chance to make the sweat 16, not the beginning or the season against North Carolina Central for christ sake...

CJF couldn't stay with anyone for Oregon on either end of the floor. Don't know how much is foot is still bothering him, but he, Cmac and Jbo were being brutilized by the Duckks....
Maybe CJ can't play with them(and I love CJ on our team)? He, JBo, nor Connor could not compete with them physically. That was men against Iowa farm boys, not a fair fight.
Joe W. better get a lot, a lot, stronger if he thinks he's going to play in the league.

Right, Fran is going to lie about his son needing dual hip surgery.

Apparently some posters here need to listen to Bill Walton and heed his words...”PAC 12.....Conference of Champions!”

Boyz...sometimes when you compete, you get your ass beat! There is no shame in that. It’s all about pulling your butt off the canvass and competing effectively again!

Lots of hyperbole here, and not in a good way.

The Hawks won 9 of 12 down the stretch after losing Nunge. The 3 games they lost were to #1 seeds in the Tournament. The last 10 games of the regular season they gave up 63 ppg. They played some excellent defense in that stretch.

Oregon was a bad match-up and they were smokin' hot. Hawks kicked to the curb by the PAC 12 regular season champs.

And suddenly, everything and everyone sucks (except Garza).

what doesn’t add up is:
A. If CJF and ConMac are so injured with injuries requiring surgery, Why startnthem and play them 2 minutes in 2h?

B. What was the reason for playing Jobo only 5m in the 2nd half?

Jobo wasn’t injured, but got benched lust like CJF and Connor, which leads us to the conclusion that

C. That there is more to the benching of all 3 in the 2h than injuries?

i'm just glad fran could recognize that conner and cj and jbo though hurtr were still better than JT, Perkins and Murray. We wouldn't have even made it to the tourney with out his great feel for the game.LMFAO

Yeah!!

let’s circle the wagons and get ready for this weekend ...oh, wait

This says a lot and begs the question a lot were asking for weeks ago. More minutes for Murray and less for Connor. Now that we find out he was injured almost ask why wasn't he starting and Connor coming off the bench and receiving less minutes? Let alone you have 2 guys struggling with injuries maybe try staggering the minutes between the 2 more instead of throwing them out in the starting lineup game after game with limited production. Watching Grand Canyon game friend brought up an excellent point after Connor got his 2nd foul. Blessing in disguise because Murray will get more minutes and put Connor on the bench. Not saying Connor isn't a D1 caliber player but you put him on most any other Big 10 or major power conference team and he wouldn't be starting for most and receive the minutes he does here.

That is what happens when a coach fails to spot develop your bench with significant playing time during the year. I played for a guy like that and it was obviously a bonehead thing to do IMO. FM will likely never get it, also IMO.

Yes, a lot of the teams that improve during a season ride a Freshman or younger player that has a higher trajectory of improvement the more they play. This Iowa team had a know defensive problem and it started with
JBO at PG and was made worse with undersized CMAC at PF. There were plenty of minutes to be redistributed.

Any time you give Giving up 56 points in a half, you can expect a loss. You have to field a team that can play defense. The starting lineup Fran rolled out every game was unable to play defense.

many truths here...

the Lineup needed a mix of defenders and shooters, however Iowa coaching staff continually ran out undersized poor defensive players as the alternative to the mix of both

And then Iowa made the decision to go zone while up 4 with4 minutes to go, maybe it was to protect these injurie, but Iowa got bummed rushed as they couldn’t defend the 3 or defe rebound and ended up,down 10 in just 4minutes

I believe it was a piece by David Eickholt had on CBS sports after our loss to Ohio St said the same thing. Remember I posted it in some thread. He said Iowa needed to sacrifice some offense for defense and spoke about mixing into the lineup guys like Murray, Toussaint and Perkins into the lineup with some shooting out there as well and focus more man with our zone getting torched. We did see improvements especially in our man D as year went by. Even Fran said before our IL Big 10 tourney game how our man was a lot better and we were playing too much zone first time we played them. That being said yesterday we fell back into old habits. Saturday in 2nd half against Grand Canyon we played zone and it didn't go well and we gave up way too many points and saw same effort vs Oregon. Then we saw Fran put our defensive guys in but left zero shooters out there. Towards end of the season Fran was doing a better job of playing JoeT or Perkins with CJ or JBo unlike during our slump in Jan/Feb. but wasn't the case yesterday and seemed like back to our old ways in how we played D and lineups we had on the floor.

I'm sure ( having had it done ) that an injection for a torn labrum could get you through a few hours of a basketball game. While this is an uncomfortable situation, it doesn't really inhibit your play all that much. Yeah you'll be sore after the game for sure...

Sure, but I find it hard to believe that Fran would say publicly that his son would need surgery on both hips if that wasn't true, would he really make that up?

Your right..after thinking about it...it is a much better idea to fire all decision-makers involved, purge several players from the team immediately and start over....Silly me! I defer to your reason LaQuinta.
If all they do is dismiss Barta immediately (with prejudice) I’d be happy.

Fran can stick around thru the remainder of his newly signed extension, since he’s not hurting the program like Lick was, more like stalling it in second gear at the moment.

Never said anything about getting rid of any players ...you must be thinking of someone else.

i believe him. I’m just wondering why he would start and injured kid (and of marginal talent), and then start him again in the 2h, only to pull him and CJF w minutes in.
that makes no sense

Let's look at those last 10 regular season games a moment
Indiana
Rutgers
Michigan St
Wisconsin 2 times
Penn St
Michigan
Ohio St 2 times
Nebraska

It's not like we were playing elite offenses over that 10 game stretch. We did play better defense at times, but none of those teams (minus Michigan and OSU) score a lot of points.

Ok.

Indiana - 69.7
Rutgers - 70
Michigan St - 69
Wisconsin 2 times - 69.6
Penn St - 72.6
Michigan - 76.3
Ohio St 2 times - 77.3
Nebraska - 70

An average of 72.1 points per game. Hawks held the group to 9 points under their season average. This is not a great defensive team, not even a very good one. But it's not like they can't play defense or don't care about defense.

What's my point?

Hyperbole. The Hawks don't stink.

Connor, get better. You are going to be needed for this team to do anything

Happy with your first sentence and couldn’t agree more but please, your second sentence, really without Connor this team won’t be able to do anything? Wow if that’s the case I better think of something else to do with my time during basketball season then . I mean if the whole season depends on Connor , I’ll just wait until next year when Bowen gets here. SMH 🤦

Connor is probably going to play as much if not more than he did last year. Whether you and/or I agree with it, it's going to happen. Embrace it and hope that he brings something the others on the team are lacking. He has his shortcomings but maybe he can rise above some of them and do great things for this team.

Connor needs dramatic offensive improvements to earn minutes. Entirely different kind of team next year where Connor's strengths will be minimized and weaknesses magnified. Iowa is going to be a very different looking team than any we've seen in the McC era.

Let's hope its change in a positive direction.

I just wonder if he still starts.

The starting 5 right now appear to be:
JoeT
JBo
PMac
Keegan
Filip

I agree he might not start, but I think he plays a lot. I'm not a big fan of that but I think it makes Fran comfortable.
