Fran's contract......Time to renew and give him a raise?

Will anyone make a run at hiring Fran this year? He'd certainly be at the top of my list if I was an AD. I wouldn't be surprised if his agent uses that to get him more money. It certainly worked for Ferentz. That being said, I can't see him leaving unless it was a top tier program (e.g., Duke, UNC, Kansas, UCLA, Kentucky). Luckily, all of these schools have coaches that will probably stick around.

Once Connor enrolls next year, I think there is no chance of him leaving ever. Patrick won't graduate until 8 years from now, and by that time Fran will probably be too old to consider leaving. Thus, as long as he doesn't get poached this year, we are going to have a great basketball coach for a long time.

I think he pretty much has a lifetime contract at this point, whatever it takes for him to stay, beyond $ beyond ridiculousness, he will be getting.

I think he wants to stay here though now, he obviously has a good thing going and recruiting is starting to get easier now as well.

Also, don't know what the hell any college coach would want to coach in the NBA, unless you absolutely despise recruiting.

Sure, you will get a nice paycheck for 2-3 years until you get fired, but no thanks....

Coach Fran has found his ultimate job. He loves Iowa
and Iowa loves him. Iowa City is a great place to raise
a family and it is not a big city traffic jam. Basketball
coaching at Iowa can be a rewarding position once you
get your program established. That is happening this
season.

Remember a month ago when soybean said he might get fired? Shows 2 things; how hot we've been and how naive that post was.

He's earned it. Pay him, bump up his staff and find out what else he needs for his program and do it.

I think give him a salary that is in the top 10-15% in the B10 with incentives that would give him a huge payday......I think that would significantly reduce the Kirk type scenario and that most people/fans would be better able to handle that. If he has a somewhat down year (next year?) then people don't get as bent out of shape if he's not the top paid guy in the league, and if he has a great year people don't bitch when he accomplishes the kind of things that would provide those rewards.

Just a few thoughts.

Coaching is a great gig isn't it?

Is Fran currently underpaid for what he's produced at Iowa? I think not. I like Fran as much as the next guy, but the sky isn't falling and Fran isn't leaving. If Fran continues on the current pace he's on, he'll get paid in due time. He's not going on food stamps anytime soon.

Has Lickliter cashed his last Iowa check yet?

So go ahead and have a plan for Fran, just be smart about it.

IF our AD has a brain at all (and that is up for debate) he has got people listening and looking to see if anyone is willing to put up serious money to get Fran.
If so

THEN do an extension.

Basically do whatever is necessary to keep him.

When you think at what he had to start with and how far he has gotten this program..

I'm sure he'll be well rewarded after the season. I'm not concerned in the least that he will be going anywhere. His last name isn't Alfraud.

Fran will get his pot of gold after this year and he will have earned it. We will take a step back next year and I hope that people cut Fran some slack.

I concur, but I think a lot will depend on how big of a step back we take. So big that we miss out on even an NIT bid is probably going to bring some harsh criticisms ...unless we make a deep run in the tournament this year, then he'll get that "throw away" year to recalibrate the team.

I would think Barta learned a lesson. I agree Fran should be nicely rewarded but I would like to see all contracts highly incentive based. Same with assistants.

Obviously you have to make sure the base for all of them is competitive, but there should be some serious cash for achieving things.

His son is only a junior at ICW this year.

I won't profess to know anything about contracts for College Basketball Coaches. Except. I do read all the time about coaches with huge buyouts being a problem when schools want to get rid of them.

To me, that is the last thing I'd want as a school. I can only guess that those kind of packages are cheaper year in and year out? As in, "We'll pay less each year but look at this great reason to feel secure! We'd never fire anyone if it costs this much!"

Well, if I sucked as a coach that might sound pretty good. I don't want that coach.

I had planned on coming to the sight and posting a new thread about "Locking up Fran" with contract extensions, etc.... LOL. Beat me to it. Doesn't his career really mimic that of Hayden Fry? Takes over bad programs and turns them into winners. Moves up the ladder a little bit, Repeat. He has turned teams into winners and he is definitely the right guy for the job. Great family angle and I think mom and dad are very impressed with the job the university hospital staff did and continues to do for Patrick's cancer. He does deserve to be in the upper tier of B1G head coaching pay, though. Not sure where he is on that right now.

What we don't hear about very much, IMHO, is how good our assistant coaches are. Speraw and Dillard were very good head coaches in their own right. It was mentioned before, but it might be a good idea to start giving them mid-major head coaching size contracts and keep them around as assistants. (maybe we already do?) Anyway, these guys probably don't get enough credit for the turnaround and the role that they have played in it. Let's pay these guys to stay, as well.

Very unlikely he goes anywhere. The reason isn't basketball either. The care his son received at UIHC and the way the community rallied around Patrick and his good friend Flash in their battle against cancer spoke volumes. They are very involved with the Childrens Hospital and IC West community, no other college job will pry them from that.

Things are definitely going good that is for sure but there is still A LOT of bb left. I say lets see how things play out the remainder of the season then go from there.
