I hope you are right man. I, frankly, am ****ing tired of the U of I athletic department always having a reason for why we can't actually win something.
I think you could make a pretty good argument our donors enable mediocrity. (Myself included)
It's an interesting question. The current situation seems to be partially fed by Barta and his weird rush to extend every coach who shows the least bit of success.
With that said, many of the programs are in as good/better shape than they have been in years.
Wrestling - won national title after long drought (for Iowa). Would have been 2 years in a row if not for COVID.
Baseball - Barta hit a homerun hiring Heller. I don't know if that was his doing or Gene Taylor's. Either way, it's working. Iowa has made the Big 10 tournament every year Heller has been coach (top 8 make it). This was after making it like 1 out of the previous 6 years.
Track - Joey Woody may be the best coach at Iowa. Winning a conference title in track at Iowa is astounding. Just amazing.
Field Hockey - after the debacle of the Griesbaum firing, the team is ranked 2nd in the nation.
Women's soccer - team turned season around and won its first ever conference tournament.
Softball - has made steps getting to the middle of the league after being awful under Looper.
Football - Iowa has something like the 12th most wins since 2015. 1-2 more division titles in that timeframe would have been a lot better.
Women's basketball - consecutive Sweet 16's. One of the best players in the country just finished her freshman season at Iowa. Future is bright.
I'm probably leaving some team out. Iowa's recruiting base and demographics make it hard to be a perennial winner in most every sport. People don't like hearing that, but it's the facts. The overall situation for Iowa athletics is good. If I could make a change, it would be to not allow the AD to extend the football and men's basketball coaches all the time.
