Fran's statement tells you everything you need to know about his mood about CJ's transfer

Sounds like he allows something he has no control over to impact his life too much.

Lol nice response. I agree with your posts. Not sure how anyone can think losing CJ isn't a bad thing - or make comments like "next guy up", etc. CJ is a scorer and was hoping after the seniors left he would take a more aggressive role in scoring. Huge loss IMO.

Whether its "being closer to home" or something else (i.e. playing time, others getting too much playing time, lack of talent of younger players, doesn't see a path to making a deep tourney run with his years left, Fran recruiting guys to replace him, etc.). No idea. But you gotta believe something else is going on than just being closer to home. Hope I am wrong.... and Kenyon is actually right on the state of the program...and not just being a cheerleader for the program that his sons currently play at.

I'm definitely more "half glass empty" when it comes to the current roster (with a lot of guys leaving) and history of tourney performance with Fran... so my outlook next year isn't very positive. Going to take a big step back IMO. Just hope the drop off isn't too drastic

7 D-1 players returning is probably pretty typical. You always will have several graduate and he's not counting the freshman coming in. And unless Connor or Josh are not coming back, I believe there will be eight.
Why wouldn't Josh be coming back?

Why are people complaining that we are going to suck next year after previously complaining about these same players not get playing time over JBo and Connor? Which is it?

I like CJ and wish he were staying, but he has not stayed healthy. This would have been his team next year. This team will need to play strong defense.

Barta has a knack with timing extensions.
The first KF contract extension was understandable because he was legitimately was a hot commodity in the early 2000s, particularly getting NFL interest.

The subsequent extensions, plus the recent Fran extension, are head-scratchers. No professional team or any P5 program has any interest in snagging KF or Fran away from Iowa, plus those crazy buyouts just make it harder to fire them.

I really don't think Barta has any interest in improving the product for the money sports. As long as they make money (and TV dollars are huuuuuge), no changes will be made as long as both FB and MBB keep making postseason appearances.

A source of mine close to the program has confirmed to me that CJ had no interest in transferring out. Fran was recruiting Deon Thomas’ son behind his back to steal his starting job and CJ found out. Fran blew it.
Did you see Fran driving Deon's son around campus in this?

Who is this Son? Unless he’s a super star , how would he take CJ’s spot?

Couple of things. First, I sincerely doubt someone who is supposedly transferring to Kentucky and will compete with 4 and 5 stars for playing time was overly concerned about anyone coming in to take his spot. Secondly, assuming that Fran was trying to make the team better, is that not his job? Isn't this message board full of people wanting him to do just that?

As for Sandfort "replacing" CJ, I wouldn't really look at that way.

Sandfort will have to carve out a little different role than CJ, as he is a forward rather than a guard. So naturally, he will give the Hawks more of an inside game than CJ did. Rebound better, has some back to the basket game, and the length to defend forwards. But the Hawks will miss a healthy CJ's playmaking, mid-range game, and feet to defend on the perimeter.

The easiest way to compare the two is as 3pt shooters. Sandfort can shoot it when he gets his feet set, no doubt. But to expect anyone to "replace" CJ as a shooter is probably unrealistic. He shot career 47% while playing hurt most of the time. He hit deep shots, he hit clutch shots. I think when healthy, he is the best Hawkeye shooter of all time. But Sandfort should definitely be able to shoot over 40%, which gets the job done. As a forward, he will get slightly different looks than CJ. More off pick-and-pops rather than coming off screens. Again, Sandfort will have to get his feet set, as he is a set-shooter. Whereas, CJ was a jump-shooter, which allowed him to make tougher shots, deeper shots, shots off the dribble, and mid-range pull-ups. But Sandfort has a high and pure release, and I expect him to be a good shooter, which will desperately be needed sooner rather than later.

The key will be how much space he has to get his feet set. There are good penetrators on the team, which will create a lot of good looks early in the season. But there isn't a lot of shooting overall, so the challenge will be creating looks later in the season against BigTen scouting reports.

Hawks will really need Keegan to step-up his 3ball, and completely expect this. He is capable.

Hawks are really going to have to rely on their defense to be good, to get out in transition for some easy buckets. The quickness is there for this to be possible. Will the teaching and emphasis of solid D be there? Past evidence would indicate not. But sometimes it takes drastic circumstances to force change. If this roster doesn't turn Fran's emphasis to defense, it will never happen. Or, the switch to D could have been the plan all along (minus the early defection of shooters). Clearly, the last class upgraded athleticism and toughness. It's reasonable to think that was by design. And the hockey line changes that Fran used, although completely ridiculous in my mind, at least showed that he is aware of the need of physical traits to defend.

Let's hope Fran adds proper teaching and emphasis of defense to the quickness on the roster. And this could become a turning point that will actually raise the ceiling of the program for the future. More than frustrating the defense was'nt emphasized while recent talent was here. But we can always hope

I am over CJ. He was a good player, a great shooter, but he was injured SO often and at such critical times that we will never know what the team could have been had he stayed healthy. It seemed like whenever Iowa had some success, he would get injured. I loved the kid and his effort, just never knew when he was going to get hurt but it was certain that he would. I hope he has better luck elsewhere but I wouldn't bet on it.

Apparently CJ was so upset about it too that he decided to transfer because of these other players not playing!?!?!? LOL.

CJ was so upset about who was playing and wasn't playing while he was hurt that he decided to leave. Never mind that none of these players are leaving or saying anything to CJ on social media.

Many people are going to get exactly what they were bitching about all year - a more "athletic" team. I look forward to the complaints about no shooters and the offense sucks.

Haha, exactly! Most posters on here should be ecstatic about CJ transferring. This means more minutes for Joe T!! He could play like 40 minutes a game now!! Ulis and Perkins will get a ton of time, too, which is all people complained about all last year.

Am I the only one that finds the statement from CJ odd.........?

"After talking with Coach McCaffery and with the statement released this morning from the University of Iowa....."

Esp the "with the statement released from the UI".......So, was he not planning on entering the portal until the UI released the statement?

Almost sounds like he talked w/ Fran this morning and Fran made the decision w/ the released mentioned by OP.....odd timing and wording of both statements

This was the original statement until the UI edited it.

More court time for Tony and Kris....as BBHawk has already said, when Iowa had success it seemed C.J. would get injured. Good luck to the young man.

Geezuz, only 7 scholarship players left? Massive attrition that I did not expect. Garza, Joe W, Nunge, Bohannon, and now CJ. That's pretty harsh. I like the guys coming back, but damn, this team just got thin real quick. Fran better be hitting the portal hard.
