Did any of you who keep harping on Fran's "Two foul jail" watch Rutgers/Indiana today? Omiyura, Rutgers best post player, only played four minutes in the first half because he had two quick fouls. Rutgers still managed to kick the Hosiers ass, which I love watching.

Meh. I would not personally employ that strategy. But Fran has insisted and will insist on using this strategy for his whole career. Doesn’t really make sense to get riled up over it at this point.

I say the same thing to myself when I see Iowa football run off tackle to the short side of the field on 2nd & 10 for a two yard gain. Kirk ain’t changing at this point.

Not too many coaches in the entire country were leaving that kid in after those two quickies. He didn’t need to be rushed back because they were doing fine without him.

I just don't like how it's a one size fits all strategy. If you're saving an inside player involved in contact situations a lot I get it. It just seems to me to be an 'icing the kicker' type of stat that could easily be blown up by advanced analytics where you handicap a good player who still finishes the game with 3 or less fouls in the end and played fewer minutes.

Do you also see where Omiyura also picked up his 3rd fouls 3m into the 2nd half, but still played, and played 15min in 2nd half?

Fran has a strict 3 foul rule in 2H that would have required Omiyura to sit.

BTW, Rutgers back up posts are 6 10” 225 Jr and 6 9” 250 Fr who played 21 total minutes,
plus their starting F are both physical 220 lb bangers.

Omiyura is well backed up , therefore giving Rutgers many more options

At least half and maybe more of all coaches employ this rule. It is not a Fran thing.

It isn't that he employs it, it's that he employs it without any regard to the score, situation or time.

For example, I would trust Connor to not pick up a 3rd foul because he is smart enough not to. Or if we we are down 15 and Kris is our only offense, I am not pulling him. Or if a guy gets two fouls with 12 min to go, we penalty don't need to sit him the full 12 min.
