Why does he never get criticism but Bohannon does? They’re kind of the same. Both good shooters but neither plays defense and neither are athletic. I kinda hope CJ goes and we get an athletic wing from the portal

CJ has been playing with a bad foot. And his coach is really, reall bad at teaching team defense. Even our team shouldn't be giving up 90+ to anyone. We weren't staying in man, we weren't switching right on screens, and we weren't fouling when getting beat off dribbles.

Also, two of CJ's teammates have double hip problems like a couple of geriatrics.

He's playing with a bad foot, which is why Calipari wants him. Wants injured transfers.

You miss me with the injury stuff. If you’re hurt don’t play. I’d much rather have Perkins in there than injured CJ

My only complaint with CJ is aggression. I want him to hunt his shot more.
Same.. but if im the opposition, my 2 best defenders are on CJ and Weezy... assuming my other defenders should have no issue with the busted hip bros.. one cant drive... the other cant shoot....

Take it or leave it, but CJ clearly was playing hurt this season.

Last season he was a pretty darn good defender. This season he was an awful defender.

There was no lift on his jumper the last part of the season. CJ relies heavily on his legs in his jumpshot, and his foot injury took away the lift. It also may have taken away some confidence, as he appeared more hesitant. And it definitely affected his ability to rip through and put the ball on the deck to get to his mid-range game.

Completely different player when healthy. If you don't want a healthy CJ on your team you are nuts. My only worry is that CJ will always have lower-leg problems. He is somewhat bow-legged, which must be increasing the stress-angle on his foot

I’ll always remember CJ’s best moments passing up a good look to pump fake and get a great look... and to pass that up too. Thing of beauty it was.
He has done that two years in a row.. just knocking everything in early in the year then moves to that pump fake mid season..

CJ is a really solid defender when healthy which has been about 40% of his time at Iowa. He is also a very capable scorer who has deferred to others maybe to the detriment of the team in some cases. CJ departing would leave a big hole that Fran would likely not fill with an equally talented player based on his past recruiting.

My critiques of Jbo have very little to do with him as a player or person but are more observations i.e. he needs that other guard on the floor with him to set him up as he is not capable of creating his own shots when teams get up on him. Jbo has suffered because Fran hasn't put that dynamic guard in the back court with him. If Jbo isn't scoring then the defensive end becomes a huge issue. Compound this with Connor's unwillingness to shoot, drive or look at the basket and you have a bad combo.

You’re an idiot. I’m probably the most high on Perkins out of anyone, but he shouldn’t be starting over CJ. When healthy, CJ has been compared to a poor mans Tyler Herro which is still really freaking good.

People don't realize how good CJ was prior to the injury. Even at best he was the third option on offense. He operated at about 60% after the injury.

Ok, with all this talk about CJ being slowed by his injury, no lift on his shot, ect. Why on earth was he playing? He was able to do nothing against Oregon. 0 points, 0 rbs, 0 assists. We already have Connor out there for that line. I just don't understand why Fran would play him, even if CJ wanted to play.

Also, when CJ went down. We went from a dominant 1 seed type team to a solid team with flaws. It never really changed after he was out for a while. We went on a losing skid and that was that.

He limited the mistakes that the freshman would make. Take Perkins for example. He had huge flashes but was limited offensively in the system. He also had 2 untimely fouls in the Oregon game that were straight up learning experiences. If he is pump faked he jumps no matter what and it resulted in 5 FTs. He also had some not so smart passes. Which he will learn from. In the middle of the year we were not willing to have those learning lumps. It would result in a loss. Hench the older and injured players played. The injuries and freshman mistakes caught up with us this year and we ran into a buzzsaw that could not miss a shot at a 57% clip. It happens.

I hope CJ and Nunge come back 100% and we see what they are capable of doing with more prominent roles. As others have stated, a healthy CJ is pretty damn good IMO but as a team guy, he hasn't necessarily looked for his shot as much as he will (I hope).

Having gone through an ACL tear, surgery, rehab and rehab issues resulting in more rehab, I can only scratch the surface of what Nunge is going through. I was obviously older and not a D-1, but I did go back to playing hoops after and it was tough mentally to not think my ACL was going to go out again with every stop and cut. I was not at Joe T. speed doing any of these things, but it was definitely a mental hurdle to overcome and that was just one time.

Thank you very much for this post! We all do dumb things from time to time but thanks to you the next time I do something really dumb and I’m asking myself “how freaking stupid are you?” I can look back at this post and say to myself “at least I’m not as stupid as that guy.”

Who knows. Sometimes I wonder if has something to do with their strength and conditioning program.
Asking more than stating but does the team really have more injuries than average? I'm not sure the CJ, Nunge, JBo, and CMac injuries can be really attributed to anything besides bad luck. Especially the hip injuries. I'm blanking on history so maybe there's other injuries I'm not thinking about...

Injuries are common across the nation, in college and NBA. I actually think it's cause kids nowadays play way too much basketball instead of wide variety of sports/cross-training. By the age of 20, they've already put 10 plus years on the hardwood.

Who came into the game and performed better? Or provided the same threat from 3 that he did?
Yeah, even injured he was a high potential player on the floor. And when FM saw that he was not going to be able to help he sat him down.

He's not a great athlete, but can hold his own on defense. I disagree that he's a great defender. But he's a decent defender and has nowhere near the athletic limitations of Bohanon. Although he struggled at times this year with injuries, when healthy he's capable of keeping an opposing 2 in front of him and not getting blown by as if he's standing still.
I definitely want him back and to be a primary shooter, possibly THE primary shooter if Wieskamp decides to leave.

I'd say that is a good point for most of the better players in their respective sport. The repetitive nature of 4-6yrs in the same sport before college could easily be damaging to a person's body.
