Check this out. I would argue that if we make our FTs in regulation, we likely win the game today.

We shot 50% (4-8) from the FT line in the first half.

Lucy, Hannah & Guyton were a combined 2-6 (33%) from the FT line in the 1st half.

In regulation, Lucy was 6-10 (60%) from the FT line. Caitlin would have been 9-10 or 10-10.

Free Throws, by Quarter:

QTR 1:...........1-2 (Lucy was 1-2)
QTR 2:.........3-6 (Hannah 0-2; Guyton 1-2)
QTR 3:..........7-9 (Lucy was 2-4)
QTR 4...........4-5 (Lucy was 3-4)

OT:.................2-2

TOTAL.......17-24 (71%)

Yeah, we are a couple throwaways, a couple free throws, a couple missed layups, & some passes that just shouldn’t have even been thrown, from being undefeated.

And although lots of teams could probably say that it’s still true all the same…

We’ve also had a couple games & today in particular where we had four three-pointers do everything but go in.

We were 12-19 when we were down 12 with 1:20 to go. We hit our last 3 fts. Syd and 1 and Olsen’s clutch pair to send to OT.

Let’s say that we were 15-19 instead and down 9 with a 1:20ish to go. It’s really hard to project how the ending plays out. With how Iowa was taking 3s and how quickly we were to send Ohio State to the line(which aided Iowa’s comeback with them going 1/2 on at least 4 trips).

I don’t think it’s as simple as saying if Iowa hit 1 or more extra fts earlier we would’ve won because the situation wouldn’t be the same. If it was a 5-6 point or less lead maybe you could’ve regretted the misses that would’ve put it at a one possession game.

Free throws are called "free" for a reason. ;)

Ironically, Ohio State was 50% at the free throw line in the last two minutes, while Iowa was 100%. Without this, there'd be no overtime.

Yes, and Ohio States missed FTs are a great point…. And correlate to our discussion.. these women are going to miss free throws. It’s just when they miss them.

It would be nice if it was Ohio states fans, upset for missing FTs right now, instead of us though….doh!!

Doesn’t fit the OPs agenda…;)
However, 70% FT shooting for this team is strong..
Iowa continues to impress me because despite of what they lost from last year they are still very competitive while figuring out a lot of stuff about “who they are”….
Iowa has lost several games this year but they have been in every game they played… and that is a credit to the players and coaches. No quit and guts are fun to cheer for!

JMO How in the hell can these young people play basketball every day of their lives and are really good players and yet can't make 80% of FREE throws?

It’s baffling for sure, but I guess that’s the nature of the beast in the women’s game🤷‍♂️

Yes, I agree!

*There are only 132 Div 1 players that have 80+ FT%.
Only 9 of those are in the B1G.
Iowa has ZERO in the top 249. The 249th player is at 72.7%.
No wonder Jan preaches 75+% and not 80+% like I 'd want them to have. 80+% seems to be asking too much out of them.
*Must have a minimum of 2.5 made FT a game and play in 75% of the games to be considered for this list.

We're actually at 71.1% for a team. WOW thought we we're better than that. Can't even hit Jan's std of 75+%.
Someone needs to run burners. Maybe tie some Rev Share NIL incentives to it next season.

Great find & tracks with what I saw in the WNBA stats dive.

Is 6-10 (60%) from the FT line "strong," Joel? Because that's what Lucy shot in regulation yesterday.

Is 33% from the FT line "strong," Joel? Lucy, Hannah & Guyton were a combined 2-6 (33%) from the FT line in the 1st half yesterday.

Was 1-6 (17%) from the FT line "strong," Joel? Because that's what Lucy shot in the home loss to Nebraska.

Again, these 15 foot, unguarded shots, are called FREE for a reason.

In those final 2 minutes:

Lucy also committed a turnover,
that led to an OSU layup the other way (IOWA had 20 total turnovers for the game; OSU had 23 points off those 20 turnovers).

Hannah also missed a layup (Iowa missed 10 total layups for the game...12-22).

Free throws in the final 2 minutes:
OSU: 5-10
IOWA: 3-3 (one of Lucy's luckily rattled in)

True. It's been an issue in most of the losses. But at crunch time, the Hawkeyes showed some grit and made them, and no better example than Lucy who hit the two tying FTs with 3.8 seconds left. There's no more pressure than that situation, and she stepped up big-time.

As is true in any close loss in any sport, there were a multitude of opportunities for Iowa to win that game: one less phantom foul on the Hawkeyes, one more made FT, one more shot of the three or four that were halfway down and spun out stays in, make one more layup of the many that were missed, eliminate just ONE of the many unforced TOs that directly led to OSU scores . . .

The Hawkeyes have lost 2 OT games and another by one point. The season has been a good one, but look at what it would be if those three games were wins . . .

After making that miraculous comeback--down 12 with 1:38 left--I thought the Hawkeyes would ride the momentum to a stunning victory. Alas, the basketball gods (and the refs) stuck with the home team, and that amazing comeback is just a footnote instead of a headline.

But beat UCLA and go from there. I imagine the Hawkeye crowd will be bringin' it. How awesome would it be to sweep the LA teams, and the Hawkeyes are already halfway there. Let's finish the job.

Teams down by 10, under 2 minutes, don't win the game, someone hands it to them. OSU tried to offer it to the Hawks.
I beg to differ. Iowa hit several incredible three-pointers down the stretch and all their clutch FTs. Sure, the other team needs to help, but if Iowa doesn't make the shots, it would have been impossible for OSU to "hand them" the game. My gawd, give Iowa credit for an incredible comeback. In any sport, at any level, it's a combination of factors that allow comebacks to happen.

Caitlin's worst season from the FT line at Iowa was 83.9% (junior year).

She shot 85.8% for her Iowa career.

Iowa could have only had two conference losses. We'd be possibly talking about USC and UCLA wanting to reschedule their games against Northwestern to catch up with Iowa at the end of the regular season. Oh well.

I like Joel, but your points valid, they are scary at the line, but what’s your plan? Bench them?

And I have to tell you, I’d probably re-evaluate my whole existent if I had a douchebag, like @DewHawk “like” anything I said…

He’s about the shittiest, most mean spirited cat on here. 😒

And not effing with you, you already know I think you’re a great dude. But it kind of is what it is, and everywhere 🤷‍♂️
