From Rick:

Hi Everyone!

It’s a blizzard outside here in Iowa City as I write this. It must be college baseball season! Hopefully, our flight can get out of Cedar Rapids in the morning, and we open the 2025 season in Tampa, Florida with a three-game series at The University of South Florida. Here is a pre-season update. Practices and training have gone well, and I believe we are ready to go. You reach a point as a player where you need to compete against someone with a different name on their jersey, and we are to that point. With a great deal of inexperience on this year’s team, this “old coach” wouldn’t mind another week or two to keep preparing!

We were able to get outside for a full week, two weeks ago. All the pitchers threw to live hitters that weekend outside. We’ve been inside since then but even having a few days outside this time of year is a bonus. The team is in good shape health wise with only a few minor injuries.

I always wish we had a spring training type weekend or two with real games to experiment with line ups and pitching roles before we do it for real. Unfortunately, we don’t have that luxury in college baseball. All the games count. This team will have plenty of new faces in the lineup this weekend. Over the next three weeks we will be doing our best to put the right pieces together. The “new “Big Ten schedule starts league play week four this year. In the past, league play began week six. This year is the start of a 10 week Big Ten schedule (vs. eight in the past), You play three non-conference weekends before starting Big Ten play and will have a bye sometime during the season. There is an odd number of teams in the baseball league, 17 teams, with Wisconsin not playing baseball.

The captains and returning players have done a fantastic job with helping bring everyone together. Not an easy task with 22 new players. This year’s captains are Gable Mitchell (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa), Andy Nelson (Sr., Winfield, Illinois), Brant Hogue (R-Sr., Sioux City, Iowa) and Jack Whitlock (R-Sr., Cumming, Georgia). When we play Friday night, Mitchell, Nelson, Ben Wilmes (Sr., Johnston, Iowa) and Reese Moore (R-So., Van Meter, Iowa) will be the returners likely in the starting lineup. On the mound Cade Obermueller (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa) will take the ball in game one, with Aaron Savary (Jr., Dubuque, Iowa) and Reece Beuter (R-Sr., Cedar Falls, Iowa) starting on Saturday and Sunday. Anthony Watts (Jr., Clive, Iowa) has pitched great, and we will use him in a “long close” situation, hopefully in game one. At the back end of the game, you will likely see Ben DeTaeye (R-Sr., Clive, Iowa) who has pitched fantastic.

South Florida will have a new Head Coach this season. Mitch Hannahs was hired over the summer. Mitch took over for me in 2014 at Indiana State when I came to Iowa. He did a fantastic job at ISU. His son Derick played for us when I was at ISU. Mitch is a great guy and coach. It’s a bit ironic we will face each other in his opener at USF.

The Bulls traditionally have a good program, and we last played them in 2017. We will see some good arms this weekend. LHP Corey Braun is a transfer from Ole Miss (90-93 w/ crossfire action) and will go on Friday. RHP James Hill is a JC transfer who is coming off Tommy John surgery in 2023 but pitched some toward the end of last year. He will go on Saturday, and we don’t know a lot about him. They are TBA on Sunday. Offensively, they will have some experienced hitters back led by Marcus Brodil (.319, 8-2B, 3-HR, .500-OBP), Jackson Mayo (.262, 15-2B, 8-HR, 36-RBI’s) Rafael Betancourt (.302, 10-2B, 20-RBI’s).

This weekend’s games will be streamed on ESPN+ and we have John Leo and John Evans on the radio again this season, they can be heard here.

I know we will have a lot of Hawk Fans out to see us the next few weekends on the road. We are looking forward to seeing everyone!! Week two we will be in Deland, Florida playing in the Stetson Tournament (Notre Dame, Stetson, UMBC). Week three, we play at a neutral site in Cleburne, TX. It will be a Thursday-Sunday, four game series vs. Washington State. Week four we are on the road to open Big Ten play at Rutgers. It will be great to see some of our east coast fans and alums that weekend!

Our annual Iowa Baseball Golf Outing will be held Friday, April 25. The opponent that weekend will be Indiana. It will run in coordination with our annual Alumni Weekend. Iowa’s graduation is the same as our final home series vs. Oregon. With hotel availability and expensive rooms that weekend we decided to move it up.

It’s exciting to get the season rolling!! We look forward to seeing a lot of you in the next few weeks!

Thanks for everyone’s support and please let me know if you have anyone to add to the e-mail list.

Thanks for posting. Going to be a (nice) shock for the team going from -80 to 80's temp wise. Also, can't wait for all of us to be able to bitch about RPI!

Unseasonably warm and humid for Tampa. I’m four hours south (back and forth from Iowa all winter) and after one cold snap the weather has been beautiful.

We’ll see a lot of position players and pitchers not just due to weather, but due to the large number of transfers in.

I’ll be in Tampa tomorrow and DeLand next weekend. I’ll have some windshield time.

Hopefully this team comes together and surprises people. I believe the pitching will be improved and it’s all about developing consistent offense. Offensive development takes longer, although trying to change release point etc isn’t easy either. They have speed. Probably see different lineups depending on what Rick wants that specific game. Starting rotation I’d assume is very subject to change also.

Hi Everyone,

Week one is in the books. There were many learning opportunities, and we found out a lot about our team. We went 1-2 vs. USF and would like to have to a couple innings back in both losses. The guys played hard, and for most innings, we played well. Our starting pitching was excellent and gave us a chance to win all three games. Sloppy defense and some struggles in the bull pen cost us leads in the 7th on Friday and 6th on Sunday. Saturday, we played a complete game in all areas.

Friday night in the season opener, Cade Obermueller (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa) went 5 innings, fanning 10 and walking 2. He only gave up one infield single. Cade left the game with a 2-1 lead and pitched fantastic. Anthony Watts (Jr., Clive, Iowa) followed with a clean 6th inning but ran into trouble in the 7th. A leadoff single and two walks led to a two out, two strike grand slam. I felt the hitter before was struck out on the 3-2 pitch, but we didn’t get the call. One swing of the bat put us behind 5-2. Brant Hogue (R-Sr., Sioux City, Iowa) came into the game with runners on 1st and 2nd and nobody out in the 8th and pitched us out of a jam. This gave us a chance to come back in the 9th. Brant was sharp.

On offense we out hit USF 8-3 but fell short after a 9th inning rally, losing 5-4. Miles Risley (Jr., Johnston, Iowa) tripled and had two hits, Ben Wilmes (Sr., Johnston, Iowa) had a double and two hits, while Jaixen Frost (R-Fr., Kellerton, Iowa) scored three runs. Gable Mitchell (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa) drove in two runs. Caleb Wulf (Jr., West Liberty, Iowa), Kooper Schulte (Jr., New London, Iowa), Risley and Frost all recorded their first hits as Hawkeyes. The guys gave a great effort, and we wish we had this one back.

On Saturday, we bounced back with a well-played 8-2 win. Aaron Savary (Jr., Dubuque, Iowa) got off to a slow start in the first inning, giving up two runs. After that he was dominant for the next five innings. Aaron had a career-high 10 strikeouts, walking two and only giving up two hits to pick up the first win of the year. At one point, Aaron sat down 18 out of 19 hitters. Ganon Archer (Jr., Adel, Iowa) came in to finish this one with 3 strikeouts in his three innings of work. Ganon was strong and only gave up one hit. Savary and Archer held USF hitters to three hits for the second game in a row.

On offense we had 11 hits and scored in six different innings. The guys strung a bunch of good at bats together and put pressure on them the entire game. Wilmes stayed hot with a double and three hits. Reese Moore (R-So., Van Meter, Iowa) hit a double, triple and had two RBI’s. Daniel Rogers (Grad., Grayslake, Illinois) homered, had two hits and two RBI’s. Risley and Jackson Beaman (R-Jr., Lincoln, Missouri) both homered. Mitchell doubled. It was Rogers and Beaman’s first hits as Hawkeye’s. It was a nice team effort on offense.

Sunday brought us back to the park early with a 10 a.m. eastern start to beat the storms that were coming in. What started out good, ended poorly with a 9-5 loss. Reece Beuter (R-Sr., Cedar Falls, Iowa) went five innings, striking out three, with no walks, five hits and two runs. We were up 4-2 in the 6th, when things fell apart. A combination of walks, hits and errors did us in. Bryson Walker (Grad., Jersey Village, Texas), Hogue, Chas Wheatley (Sr., Edmonton, Alberta), Ben DeTaeye (R-Sr., Clive, Iowa), Daniel Wright (Grad., Sergeant Bluff, Iowa) and Sam Hart (Sr., Highlands Ranch, Colorado) all threw in this one. Wheatley, Wright, and Hart had solid outings.

USF out hit us 13-11 and homered three times. The offense had opportunities to break this one open in the first five innings. We had a lot of traffic on the bases but couldn’t get the knockout blow. Mitchell had a big game with four hits, and two RBI’s. Rogers hit his second home run of the weekend. Frost doubled. Risley finished off a great weekend with two more hits. Our team defense was sloppy, and it cost us dearly in this one. The defense was subpar all weekend. We will be working hard to clean it up this week.

We head to Deland, Florida Thursday morning to play in the Stetson Tournament. The competition will be Notre Dame on Friday at noon (eastern), Stetson on Saturday at 5:00 pm (eastern), and UMBC at 10:00 am (eastern), on Sunday. Notre Dame took two of three from North Florida over the weekend. Stetson is coming off a nice start beating UConn, Penn State and Missouri to start the season. They lost to Michigan in game four of their tournament. UMBC didn’t play in week one.

• All three games this weekend will be streamed on ESPN+
• You can also listen to John Leo and John Evans on the radio broadcast here.

APRIL 25-27-Letterwinners Celebration Weekend-ALL LETTERWINNERS are invited back. Mark your calendars! I hope to see a big turn out this year when we play Indiana that weekend. You will get two free tickets to all three games. There will be a letterwinners tailgate right behind the stadium before Saturday’s game. All letterwinners will be getting additional information from the Iowa Foundation, if you haven’t already.

• The program will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of our 1975 teams’ regional appearance and the 2015 teams’ 10-year anniversary of their regional appearance.
• We will celebrate the 1981 and 2023 teams school record 44 wins. It will be the 44th anniversary for the 1981 teams record season.

• Our Iowa Baseball Golf Outing will be held Friday, 4/25, 9:00 am at Finkbine. If you would like to sponsor a hole or help with an auction prize, please let us know! We could use the help!

A large group of Hawk fans were on hand to support us down in Tampa! Thanks to all of you for the support!

We are looking forward to seeing a bunch more Hawks in Deland this weekend!

Keep sending me names of anyone who would like to be added to the mailing list.

GO HAWKS!

Looks like some okay weather in Deland. Any chance Iowa starts anyone other than the 3 that started the series vs USF?

It’s going to be cooler than last weekend. In the 70’s where I’m at, tomorrows high in DeLand is 56.

The starting rotation is subject to change. Position players are especially subject to change. I see the same SP this weekend. AW needs to pitch through the unfortunate events of last weekend.

Both Notre Dame and Stetson have high RPIs, so Iowa has a lot of opportunity this weekend.

Need to play cleaner. Need more consistent bats. Need the bullpen to keep improving up and down.

Hi Everyone,

This past weekend we went 2-1 at the Stetson Tournament and now sit at 3-3 overall after two weeks on the road. We head to Cleburne, TX to play a neutral site, four game series with Washington State this week. It is a quick turnaround for us as we will head to the airport in a couple of hours. We play game one of the series Thursday. This will be the last non-conference weekend, and we will start the Big Ten season at Rutgers on March 7th.

For those wondering why we are playing Washington State in Cleburne, TX, here is why. We had been scheduled to play in Minnesota’s big tournament in the Vikings stadium for several years. When Coach Anderson retired last season the Vikings told the new coach, Ty McDevitt they couldn’t play that weekend. Ty and the Gophers had the contract and fought back with the Vikings but when November hit and no agreement had been reached, Ty had to cancel to give all of us time to try and find an opponent in case they lost the battle.

Losing that tournament hurt. It would have been an inexpensive, drivable trip, plus we would have played San Diego, Duke, and Washington St. I was afraid that Washinton St. and Iowa would be the two teams that couldn’t find a series or tourney that late in the game. After talking with WSU, we both agreed to play each other at a neutral site if we couldn’t find a series. That’s what happened and thus, the series in Cleburne. Cleburne is just south of Fort Worth is the home of the Cleburne Railroaders Independent pro team. It has a turf field.

Friday, we kicked off the Stetson Tournament with a gut-wrenching loss to Notre Dame, 2-1 in 11 innings. Cade Obermueller (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa) gave us a great start. Cade only gave up one run through 5 1/3 innings with eight strike outs, three walks and four hits. Anthony Watts (Jr., Clive, Iowa) pitched well in relief. Anthony didn’t give up a run the 2 2/3 innings he threw fanning four and walking one. He only allowed one hit. Ben DeTaeye (R-Sr., Clive, Iowa) pitched great in final the three innings, giving up one run on two hits and struck out six. With two outs in the bottom of the 11th ND’s Connor Hicks ran into the first pitch he saw and hit over the right field fence to walk us off. The guys who threw in this one deserved a better fate.

We had numerous opportunities to win this game in the last four innings but shot ourselves in the foot each time. With 6 hits in the 8th through the 10th you need to find a way to put them away. Poor situational hitting, missed signs, and bad baserunning decisions cost us in each of those innings. The offense out hit Notre Dame 10-7 with Jaixen Frost (R-Fr., Kellerton, Iowa), Caleb Wulf (Jr., West Liberty, Iowa), Kooper Schulte (Jr., New London, Iowa), and Miles Risley (Jr., Johnston, Iowa) having two hits apiece. Frost and Risley doubled. We played error free baseball. You hate to waste such great pitching, and this one hurt more than most L’s.

Saturday, we beat Stetson 7-0 in the night game in front of a nice crowd. After a loss like Friday’s, to bounce back like we did Saturday tells you a lot about this team. It was a great sign. Aaron Savary (Jr., Dubuque, Iowa) picked up his second win of the young season going 5 1/3 innings and only allowed one hit. Aaron was selectively wild at times walking and fanning 6 Hatters. Ganon Archer (Jr., Adel, Iowa) went 1 2/3 innings without giving up a run. Daniel Wright (Grad., Seargent Bluff, Iowa) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, not giving up a run or a hit. Our pitchers used the double play to their advantage on this nightas our defense turned three to get the shut out.

Offensively, we had 10 hits and scored in four different innings. Ben Wilmes (Sr., Johnston, Iowa), Risley and Jackson Beaman (R-Jr., Lincoln, Missouri) all had two hits. Wilmes doubled and scored two runs while Beaman hit his second home run of the season. Daniel Rogers (Grad., Grayslake, Illinois) had three RBI’s and we played another errorless game. It was a tremendous bounce back win vs a good team.

Sunday, we had a quick turnaround leaving for the field at 8:00 am. This week we handled the early game on “get out” day much better than we did last Sunday, beating UMBC 6-0. Reece Beuter (R-Sr., Cedar Falls, Iowa) set the tone for us throwing 7 innings on only 70 pitches! Reece only allowed one hit while fanning five. He pitched awesome and it was fun to watch! Brant Hogue (R-Sr., Sioux City, Iowa) and Jack Whitlock (R-Sr., Cumming, Georgia) closed this one out and pitched great. Hogue fanned all three batters he faced and neither gave up a hit. It was our second shutout in less than 24 hours. The staff only allowed 2 runs in the 30 innings we played this weekend. That is an impressive performance that you don’t see much in college baseball!

The offense scored a run in each of the first two innings giving Beuter a lead to work with. It was 4-0 in the 9th when we scored three giving us some insurance. Ben Swails (R-So., Tiffin, Iowa) had a big game in his first start with three hits and a double. Ben made some nice plays at 3rd as well. Wilmes and Reese Moore (R-So., Van Meter, Iowa) had two hits. Wilmes doubled and Moore homered. The third errorless game in a row was nice to see after the week before. It was our first games on grass and dirt since last summer and guys handled it well.

This week we will face Washington State who is off to a rough start this season at 0-8. They’ve played a tough schedule, starting off with a four-game series at #4 Arkansas. They lost game one in 10 innings. They lost to Michigan State, a 7-6 loss to UCLA and two losses to Texas A&M Corpus Christi. They are a better team than the record shows.

We will play game one Thursday like a normal midweek game. This allows us to keep the starting rotation the same as the past two weekends with Obermueller, Savary and Beuter on Friday-Sunday. I’m hoping to see another weekend where we improve and play clean baseball. It can’t get much better from a results standpoint on the mound! We need to improve offensively with better situational hitting, bunting and baserunning. Our defense needs to be something we hang out hat on each week and we took a big step forward this past weekend. I’m excited to see several of our pitchers throw on Thursday who haven’t made an appearance yet this year. It should be a fun weekend.

All the games can be heard on our radio broadcast from John and John here. Live stats can be followed here.

Hi everyone,

Last week we were in Cleburne, TX playing the Washington State Cougars in a four-game series. We were able to play Loras Monday evening in for our first home game of the season. We went 1-3 vs WSU and beat Loras on Monday. Our record sits at 5-6 as we begin Big Ten play this weekend at Rutgers.

Last Thursday we lost to WSU in what was a trial run at a mid-week game. It didn’t go so well. We lost 12-7 while out hitting the Cougars 16-10. Eight pitchers threw in this one with Tyler Guerin (Fr., Shoreview, Minnesota), Chas Wheatley (Sr., Edmonton, Alberta) and Justin Hackett (Jr., Winterset, Iowa) being the bright spots on the mound. Our staff didn’t have a good day walking seven and gave up many more free bases. We were down 6-0 in the 4th when the offense started chipping away at the lead. We cut the lead to 7-4 in the 6th, but a five-run bottom of the 6th was the dagger. There were some opportunities in the 7th and 8th when we scored three, but WSU avoided the big innings sending us home with the loss.

11 players had a hit for us in this one with Gable Mitchell (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa) having three hits and a double. Ben Wilmes (Sr., Johnston, Iowa), Miles Risley (Jr., Johnston, Iowa), Andy Nelson (R-Sr., Winfield, Illinois) and Kooper Schulte (Jr., New London, Iowa) each had two hits. Schulte and Caleb Wulf (Jr., West Liberty, Iowa) each had two RBI’s. We stranded 14 in this one with WSU making pitches when we had them on the ropes.

Friday Cade Obermueller (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa) went six innings giving up four runs on eight hits and fanned seven. Cade gave us a quality start and a 3-1 lead when he left the game. WSU scored two in the 6th and 7th and one in the 9th to pull away with the 7-4 win. Anthony Watts (Jr., Clive, Iowa), Brant Hogue (R-Sr., Sioux City, Iowa) and Gannon Archer (Jr., Adel, Iowa) finished this one out.

WSU out hit us 13-10 in this one. Wulf had a big game going 4-5 with three RBI’s. We stranded 11 and this is one we wish we had back.

Saturday Aaron Savary (Jr., Dubuque, Iowa) pitched well for the third straight week going 5.1 innings. Aaron gave up two runs on three hits and struck out six. He left with a 3-1 lead. The Cougars hit our bullpen around and we blew a 4-3 lead in the 7th to lose 6-4.

The offense went cold after we jumped on them early going scoreless the final three innings. Wilmes and Mitchell each had two hits. Wilmes doubled and Jackson Beaman (R-Jr., Lincoln, Missouri) homered. We played an errorless game.

After giving one away on Thursday and blowing leads late on Friday and Saturday, we won the Sunday game 14-3. Reece Beuter (R-Sr., Cedar Falls, Iowa) pitched his third stellar game in a row and picked up his second win of the season. Reece went 6 innings, giving up three runs on six hits and fanned four. Tyler Guerin threw a scoreless 7th as we 10 run ruled them in the bottom half of the inning.

We jumped on them early with a walk, two hits and a Reese Moore (R-So., Van Meter, Iowa) three-run homer to give us a 4-0 lead in the 1st. Reese had two hits and four RBI’s. Mitchell had three hits, a double and two RBI’s. Wulf had two hits. Blake Guerin (Jr., Shoreview, Minnesota) had a pinch hit, two run homer to end the game. We played poorly with four errors but survived the mistakes in this one.

It was a weekend where WSU played lights out until Sunday when they had a pitcher give us some free bases. We didn’t play poorly but every mistake we made the Cougars made us pay. They bunted incredibly well, and their hits found holes when they needed them too. The WSU defense only made one error in the four games while making an insane amount of run saving, game changing defensive plays. Sometimes you have to just tip your cap. Our bad luck continued at the plate with line drive after line drive being caught. Even on Sunday scoring 14 runs we hit several more 100+ exit speed line drives that were caught. Baseball can be a cruel game at times, and it was this weekend.

We were scheduled to play St. Thomas on Wednesday but the forecast looked bleak. I felt like we needed to play a game this week to get those pitchers who struggled last Thursday back out on the mound before we start Big Ten play this weekend. In years past we could have waited a week. League play didn’t start until week six. With us starting week four now, there was no time to wait. I placed a call to Loras College coach Carl Tebon on Sunday morning and we were set to play Monday afternoon. Thanks to Carl and Loras for making it happen.

After being on the road since Wednesday and then getting delayed into Cedar Rapids on Sunday night, we got back to Iowa City at 1 am. The guys showed some toughness on the 5th day in row that we played a game and beat Loras 11-3.

Regardless of the outcome, getting those pitchers back out there vs. a different color jersey will pay off down the road. Nine pitchers combined to only allow four hits, three runs, struck out 14 and best of all only waked one and hit one. With no defensive errors we only gave them two total free bases on the night. It doesn’t always play out like you want it to but on this day it did.

Offensively, we jumped on the Duhawks with four runs in the first. Six singles in the 1st inning is something you don’t see often. It was good to give the staff a lead to work with. After that, the bats went dead until the 6th when we plated three and then another four in the 7th. 11 different Hawk’s had hits with Moore leading the way with a four hit night, including a double and a triple. Mitchell had two hits, two walks and two RBI’s. Blake Guerin hit his second pinch hit homer in a row, a three-run shot off the batter’s eye in the 6th after fouling off seven straight pitches.

This week we open Big 10 play and will head to Piscataway, NJ for a three-game series with Rutgers.
The Scarlet Knights are 5-7. They are team that turned over their roster last year like us. They only have 2 returning starters. We will see a completely different team than we saw in Iowa City last spring. They are hitting .290 as a team and the staff has a 5.92 ERA. They have a played a solid preseason schedule. The rotation will go RT, RT, LT this weekend.

All the games can be streamed on B1G+ and heard on the Hawkeye Radio Network. Game times are 2:00, 2:00 and TBA. I’m guessing the start time on Sunday will be at 1:30 pm, but if any rain comes to the forecast we could be playing as early as 11:00 am. These times are Eastern.

Thanks to all the Texas Hawks that came to see us in Cleburne last week!! Looking forward to seeing some of east coast Hawks this weekend!!

Thanks for all the support!

Hi Everyone,

This past weekend we opened Big Ten play with a series win at Rutgers and a Tuesday win at home vs. Augustana. As we head into our first home series of the year, we are 8-7 overall and 2-1 in league play.

CHANGE IN THIS WEEKENDS SCHEDULE
Tomorrow (Friday) we will play a doubleheader starting at noon. Saturday we will play at 1 p.m. By playing two on Friday, we will avoid the cold and windy conditions predicted for Sunday. Friday the temps will be in the mid 70’s with the chance of storms moving in later in the day. Fingers crossed that we get both games finished before the weather hits. Saturday the cold front moves in with high winds and a real feel temperature predicted in the upper 30’s. Not pleasant but playable. Sunday’s forecast is similar to Saturday but with colder temperatures and a real feel predicted in the upper 20’s to low 30’s. It must be 28 degrees “real feel” for us to play by league rule.

Last Friday in New Jersey we lost a tough one to Rutgers 5-4. Cade Obermueller (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa) went 5.2 innings, giving up five runs on six hits. Daniel Wright (Grad., Sergent Bluff, Iowa) pitched well the last 2.1 innings and only gave up one hit and no runs. We didn’t have many free bases on this day, but a couple were costly. The disappointing part of this loss was that we gave them three runs on free bases.

Ben Wilmes (Sr., Johnston, Iowa) hit a grand slam in the 4th to give us a 4-3 lead. Rutgers scored one in the 5th and 6th and our offense didn’t score again. We only had four hits on the day with Wilmes having two of them. We had some pitches to hit but were just off the barrel on this day.

Saturday, we bounced back with a great game. It was a 16-0 shutout. Aaron Savary (Jr., Dubuque, Iowa) pitched another gem for us going five innings, no runs, only three hits and struck out six. Aaron was the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week for his outstanding effort. Sam Hart (Sr., Highlands Ranch, Colorado) and Justin Hackett (Jr., Winterset, Iowa) both threw a clean inning to keep the shutout safe. We finished this one in seven innings as the Big Ten added the 10-run rule to all games this year. Defensively, we played an errorless game.

The score was 3-0 until the 5th when we broke out with seven runs. We scored five runs on six hits all with two outs in the inning. The guys followed it up with another big inning in the 6th scoring five more runs to put this one away. We had 10 players who recorded hits, and we had seven extra base hits on the day. Jackson Beaman (R-Jr., Lincoln, Missouri) hit two home runs and drove in four. Reese Moore (R-So., Van Meter, Iowa) had three hits. Gable Mitchell (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa), Caleb Wulf (Jr., West Liberty, Iowa), Mitch Wood (Sr., Ottumwa, Iowa), and Jaixen Frost (R-Fr., Kellerton, Iowa) all had two hits. Wilmes, Blake Guerin (Jr., Shoreview, Minnesota), Miles Risley (Jr., Johnston, Iowa) and Ben Swails (R-So., Tiffin, Iowa) all homered.

We needed one like this. To this point it had been a hard luck year with lots of line drives that were caught, or the wind was blowing in. With the wind blowing out to left today, the guys were rewarded when they made solid contact.

Sunday was a big day for us! It was a back-and-forth game until the 6th when we broke it open. A 12-6 winner and a Big 10 road series win was the result. Reece Beuter (R-Sr., Cedar Falls, Iowa) went 3.2 innings giving up six runs on six hits. Anthony Watts (Jr., Clive, Iowa) went the final 4.2 innings. Tony didn’t give up a run and pitched great to pick up the win.

This was the first time this year that we’ve responded both on the mound and offensively after getting punched in the mouth. We were up 4-2 in the 4th and gave up four runs all with two outs putting us down 6-4. The offense scored runs in the next three innings to pull ahead, and Watts shut the Scarlet Knights down the rest of the way. We showed some toughness and character Sunday, which was great to see!

Our hitters scored runs in the first three innings. We had a lot of traffic but only four runs. It looked like it might be one of those days when we missed our opportunity to put them away. Rutgers pitchers worked out of jams and limited the damage. But on this day, we kept the pressure coming. We scored in six different innings and finally broke through in the 6th with four runs. Three more runs in the 7th gave us plenty of insurance.

Beaman stayed hot with two more hits and his 7th home run of the season and third in the series. Risley and Swails both hit three run homers. Wood Doubled. The defense played well.

Tuesday, the weather was good in Iowa City, and we beat Augustana 16-1. This was a 3-1 game in the 6th with Augustana playing and pitching well. We had nine pitchers throw for us and several had to work out of jams in the first five innings. Tyler Guerin (Fr., Shoreview, Minnesota), Bryson Walker (Gr., Jersey Village, Texas), Jaron Bleeker (Fr., Seargent Bluff, Iowa), Ganon Archer (Jr., Adel, Iowa), Hackett, Chas Wheatley (Sr., Edmonton, Alberta), Will Pearson (Sr., Watkinsville, Georgia), Hart, Ben DeTaeye (R-Sr., Clive, Iowa) and Wright all threw an inning. The staff only gave up one run on 12 hits.

On offense we couldn’t get much going early. Augustana didn’t give us a free base until the 6th inning, and we didn’t get a leadoff man on until the 6th. We plated three through six and finally broke it open with an eight-run 7th. With two outs in the 7th, we scored four runs on six hits!

Daniel Rogers (Grad., Grayslake, Illinois) had three hits and a double. Moore had two hits, scored three runs, and drove in three. Jaixen Frost had two hits, one a double. Tyler Guerin, Swails, Kooper Schulte (Jr., New London, Iowa) and Beaman all doubled. We ended the night with 17 hits. The wind was blowing straight in and it hurt us, gobbling up what would have been five home runs.

This weekend we will face our toughest challenge so far this season when Michigan State comes to town. They are off to a hot start at 12-4 and have a Friday night starter that is 4-0 with a 0.70 ERA. Joeseph Dzierwa is a lanky 6’5” lefty with a mid-90’s fast ball and pounds the zone with four pitches. He has struck out 41 batters in 25 innings and has only walked six. Those are crazy numbers! He has good deception and hides the ball well in his wind up. The MSU offense has a lot of speed and have already stolen 38 bases. It will be a great challenge for us, and we are looking forward to it.

All the games can be seen on B1G+ and you can listen to John Leo and John Evans on the Hawkeye Radio Network.

HAWKEYE LINKS

Throw strikes!!!!
I was hoping that with the new pitching coach things might change but nooooo.

Hi Everyone!

Week five is in the books. We had a 3-1 week, winning the series vs. Michigan State and beating Illinois Chicago on Tuesday night. Our record is 11-8 overall and 4-2 in Big Ten play. The final three games of our homestand will be this weekend vs. Ohio State. We start a long nine game road stand after Sunday.

As I write this, we will plan on playing Friday, Saturday and Sunday as scheduled this weekend. We are moving up the start time Friday to 3:00 pm to try and beat the rain that was added to the forecast this morning. There are some higher rain chances early on Sunday with 40-50 mph winds coming in after the rain. We will look at the forecast Friday and make a final decision on Sunday or a DH Saturday.

Last Friday was a repeat of the first four Fridays. A game where we fought hard and came up short. This one was extra painful as Blake Guerin (Jr., Shoreview, Minnesota) clutched up with a pinch-hit home run to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th. We ended up losing 12-8 in 11 innings.

Cade Obermueller (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa) started and went 5.2 Innings with six strikeouts and no walks. He gave up five runs on nine hits. Daniel Wright (Grad., Sergeant Bluff, Iowa) came in and gave up three runs on three hits. Sam Hart (Sr., Highlands Ranch, Colorado) slowed the game down for us with two solid innings only giving up one hit and no runs. Anthony Watts (Jr., Clive, Iowa) gave up four runs on five hits in the final two innings. The wind was blowing out hard to left field and MSU took advantage of it with six home runs on the day.

Offensively, we led 3-1 in the 6th inning when MSU broke out for four. The guys fought back scoring in the last three innings to tie it. Our bats went cold in extra innings and MSU closer Tyler Horvath pitched us tough. We had 12 hits on the day with Daniel Rogers (Grad., Grayslake, Illinois) leading the way with three, three RBI’s and homer. Reese Moore (R-So., Van Meter, Iowa) had two hits, three RBI’s and a home run. Ben Swails (R-So., Tiffin, Iowa) had two hits. Guerin hit his third pinch hit home run of the season! We played errorless baseball.

Friday was a doubleheader day, and the guys bounced back with a 7-3 win in game two. Aaron Savary (Jr., Dubuque, Iowa) pitched another great game going 7.1 innings only allowing two runs to pick up his fourth win of the season. Chas Wheatley (Sr., Edmonton, Alberta) and Ben DeTaeye (R-Sr., Clive, Iowa)) finished this one off.

It was a 0-0 game until we broke out with a six-run 5th. We added one in the 8th after MSU scored three in the top half. Jackson Beaman (R-Jr., Lincon, Missouri) and Ben Wilmes (Sr., Johnston, Iowa) each had two hits. Jaixen Frost (R-Fr., Kellerton, Iowa) had a big two out, three run homer in the 5th. Gable Mitchell (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa) doubled.

Game three Saturday was a cold and windy day, but our bats were hot! Our guys came out ready to play and put up four runs in the first and six more in the second. This gave Reece Beuter (R-Sr., Cedar Falls, Iowa) plenty to work with as he went five innings with eight K’s and didn’t give up a run. He picked up his third win. Tyler Guerin (Fr., Shoreview, Minnesota) and Brant Hogue (Sioux City, Iowa) finished this one with the 10-run rule in the 7th. Hogue looked good.

Offensively, we came out on fire with five hits in the 1st inning and five more in the second. Mitchell, Beaman and Swails all had two hits. Miles Risley (Jr., Johnston, Iowa) had a bases clearing triple and four RBI’s. Frost and Mitchell both doubled. After the second inning the bats went cold but the 10 runs early were enough.

Tuesday, we beat UIC 4-1 on beautiful mid-March Day here at home. 10 pitchers threw in this one. We had to make some pressure pitches early after we gave us several free bases in the first three innings. The staff did a nice job working out of the self-inflicted jams. Jack Whitlock (R-Sr., Cumming, Georgia), Wheatley, Watts, Hogue, Hart and DeTaeye all had good outings.

After we gave UIC its lone run in the first, Moore evened it up with his 4th homer of the year in the bottom half. Moore had two hits on the day. We scored one in the next two innings via some UIC free bases and one more in the 7th. Risley and Swails both doubled. It wasn’t our greatest performance offensively. We did just enough to get the win.

This weekend we play an Ohio State team that is 6-12 overall and 0-3 in league play. To think they aren’t a good team would be a mistake. New Coach Justin Haire was left a very tough schedule to open the season. They’ve played Arizona State three times, NC State, Coastal Carolina, Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, Oregon State in non-conference games. They were swept at one of the top teams in our league, Indiana, in Bloomington last weekend.

If they aren’t the best team, we’ve played so far, they definitely have the most talent we’ve seen. The Buckeyes have a potent offense that is filled with plus runners, plenty of power and lefthand hitters. OSU has stolen 38 bases. They have a .400 OBP% with 37 doubles and 25 home runs. Offense hasn’t been the Buckeye’s problem. OSU has some talented arms, but they’ve had some issues with free bases, especially in their bullpen. It will be a challenging weekend for us for sure.

You can watch and listen to all the games on B1G+ or the Hawkeye Radio Network.

Sign up for the Iowa Baseball Golf outing here.

Come out and see up this weekend! We appreciate your support!

Go Hawks!
