From what I have seen now, I think this team is just fine

We have some talented players. And we have a ton of 3 point shooters. I was worried last week when I read that we lost to Augustana, but we are fine. We will have a good season and make the tourney.

Mark it down.

I like the athleticism of the team. We have gotten a lot more athletic from what I have seen. Pretty sloppy at times, but its not like that, "lack of skills type sloppy." Its more of them trying to hard, and that is correctable.

I am reserving judgement until we have played a few more games. Having said that, I like the pieces we have, now we just need to develop them and find a rotation that works. Im impressed with Uhl, Wagner, Jones and Ellingson so far plus the old guys. I think they will all play a big part as the year progresses. Gonna be a fun season!!

Also, I like Dale Jones's range. He is going to be a nightmare match up for teams.

I like Fran, I like the quality of the kids, I like our style of play. I am concerned about the quality and depth on the other BIG teams this year.

I think we we struggle off the boards and I see our defense as an issue. Our 3/4 press gave teams fits last year, AW and Gabe were key. We will miss their quickness in addition to their length. We are short of Big ten shot bockers and I don' t see us changing shots at the rim. The new kids look to have problems defending the bounce and we don't have erasers behind them.

I'll be happy if we're a bubble team that goes dancing. Anything better will be gravey. Our offense should be similar to LY in my few. We will shoot it better but miss the offensive rebounds.

Fran can't afford to have his current starting lineup as he doesn't have enough offense with that group. I think he needs to go with Gesell, Jok, Utoff, Woodbury and either Uhl or Jones. Clemmons should relieve Gesell only and Ellingson relieve Jok. Then, the front court should be backed up with either Uhl or Jones , whichever doesn't start and Baer and Wagner. That's ten deep and that's plenty. I don't see any other freshman getting any significant minutes this year unless injury or illness.
Fleming appears to currently be a major ball hog and his defense is soft. He needs this year to sort things out.
I think Williams will be ok at the point next year. The others need to sit the year out.
I think Uhl, Jones and Ellingson will be able to offset much of what we lost with White and Gabe offensively and Utoff and Jok will pick up the rest. Woodbury, Gesell, and Clemmons haven't improved offensively much over the past three years. We can't afford to have those guys on the floor at the same time offensively.

I don't think I've read one fan who doesn't agree with you on this, just don't know why the beat writers haven't been challenging Fran hard on this. Sapp needs to get out of the first 5 and it has nothing to do with him not "deserving" to start.

This is a pretty good way to look at it after 2 games. I'm sure it will look a little different by the end of November.

I think allot of our fans still haven't really recovered from the mental trauma of Alford/Lick.

First we couldn't win without Gattens, then we couldn't possibly win without Marble and now, predictably, its Aaron White and were too short.

Its college basketball, when players leave new ones step up to fill new roles. You don't have to win the same way you did the year before.

This should be Fran's best offensive team. Reminds me of a Hoiberg team actually. A little short but lots of skill and shooting all over the floor.

Three point shooting can make up for just about any deficiency and when you can keep the floor spaced offense becomes easy.

I think it's more about finding the right rotation and fitting the pieces together. This group has a little of everything from experience to skill and it's just a matter of becoming a team. They will get there, have some patience!

This. And not better way to mix in the new guys, than with a bunch of senior leadership.

Wagner on the glass will really help. He's important because Iowa needed someone like that to emerge. He's a beast down there. Everything else is fitting the pieces together and finding the right combos, but I am optimistic about what Iowa can get done this year.

I'm trying to remember the last time Fran went with the same starting lineup, or even same rotations, for the better part of the year.

Oh, that's right, he continually tweaks things, moves guys in and out of the lineup and rotation. What he's using now is most likely NOT going to be what he uses in January.

Agreed. There is nothing wrong with opening the season with your most experienced guys and allowing the rest to play their way into more important roles, including eventually starting. I'd also say that starting does not necessarily mean a huge role in a game. If someone is playing well, Fran keeps them in.

Here are the season stats right now, a revealing part is how many minutes guys got in the first two games. That will change in competitive situations, but everybody is certainy getting a pretty fair look, and that's what one would expect from a good coach.

Seriously, we don't need "beat writers" challenging Fran to do anything. But if one wants to take their life in their hands and try...well, that's up to them.

The Basketball board is always good for a few laughs. This was one of the funnier posts, I would say.
What is so funny hooper ? It's my opinion. That is what this board is for, sharing opinions not making fun of those who don't agree with you. I don't think Woody, Gesell, and Clemmons are good offensive options against good teams.

You said they have not improved in 3 years. That is laughable. For example, Mike had 12 assists the other night and Clemmons was our most accurate 3 point shooter last year. To say these guys have not improved is simply not a valid opinion. If you feel that way then you would probably be happier following Iowa State.

BTW, I like Clemmons offensive game. He has stepped it up. And I disagree, but agree with some of you about him coming off the bench. Yes, we need him there, but he is also a real weapon that can help us come out of the gate quickly. I am torn on where we should put him.

This has nothing to do with my personal "happiness" internet tough guy. I said they haven't improved "much" , don't miss quote me. Mike and Woody still miss many point blank layups. They have never been considered great shooters. None of the three I mention have greatly improved their PPG over their career. I hope they do . I have been a Hawk fan my whole life so don't give me any ISU bs. It wasn't necessary to go their.

I don't think Doug is that off base on this one.
Clemmons averaged 4.3 ppg as a freshman, averaged 4.8 ppg as a junior
Gesell averaged 8.7 ppg as a freshman, averaged 7.4 ppg as a junior
Woodbury averaged 4.9 ppg as a freshman, averaged 6.6 ppg as a junior.

Of course parts of their game have improved including their offense but I would guess most people would have expected them to put up better numbers as their careers progressed

Well sram21 said it first below and Dan just expanded on it very well above.....

Uh....we are 2 games (2-0) into this thing..how about we give Fran some rope to figure out his roster. He will know more after tomorrow night.

Yeah, stats always tell the whole story and it is hard to believe that we have managed to win 69 games with those three chumps in the lineup. Or maybe they know their roles on the team and realize that they didn't have to be the primary scorers in every game, especially when we just had two guys on the Big Ten first team and drafted by the NBA.

Iowa looked pretty good tonight. Any lineup that has Uthoff in it works--that guy is difference maker.

I think Iowa will need added depth/athleticism/toughness of Wagner this season.

Fran still coaching? Check.

We have a lot of winners on the court every time they step out.

This is the core of the team that had the largest margin of victory of an 7 seed over a 10 seed in NCAA history. They didnt forget how to ball. in the off season they were working on their game to get better.

Gesell looks better.
Jok looks way better.
Uthoff shot was off and he still scored 15.
Jones is a nice addition and deep threat. He is certainly not lacking confidence.

This team will score a lot this season and win a lot of games on the offensive end of the court. We'll see.

Yea...we need to bump these thoughts above......very nice win tonight Hawks!

One of Uthoff's shots/ball was over half way under the rim but managed to pop out magically. Rim wasn't doing him any favors tonight.

I 100% agree that Sapp should come off the bench. I 100% disagree with his post about MG, AW, and Sapps lack of offensive improvement.
