FYI - for anyone doing dry January…

January always struck me as the worst possible month to quit drinking if you live in a northern climate. Enjoy the nothing to do and nowhere to go that isn't freezing, while you force a change on your lifestyle. Dry July maybe, when you can go be active without ten layers of clothing.
I think April would be best up here. Warm enough to get outside for activities and yard work. People are motivated for spring cleaning, new beginnings, and such. Super Bowl and March madness are over. No holidays to celebrate like the Memorial Day, father’s day, or the 4th. No pool parties. college football has not begun.

I agree except I golf and drinking with your buddies on the course is a tough pass up

I always think a dry month sounds good, then I can’t really come to a reason not to have a drink. Off the top of my head, maybe April.

January - Playoffs, birthday, anniversary
February - Super Bowl
March - March Madness, St. Patrick’s Day
April - It’s just nice to sit on my back deck and I’m usually at a baseball game
May - baseball and Memorial Day
June - baseball, possibility of being on vacation
July - Independence Day
August - start of football
September - Football
October - starts to be a chill in the air and football
November - have to survive the in-laws at Thanksgiving
December - Holiday parties

It's a mindset - I love Jan because there are lots of things I can't do in the summer. Skiing, ice fishing, skating, sledding with the kids, etc. I still drink heavily tho. CSB

You guys know you can make lifestyle changes independently of social media trends, right?

Based on the comments itt I think it might be more beneficial for people to learn to occasionally enjoy some of their "favorite" activities without alcohol rather than abstain for an entire month like they are holding their breath.

Most of these idiots are weakly constitutioned teetotalers to begin with! Tell them they might get poopy cancer from drinking, and not only are they scared shitless--no pun--it instantly becomes another segment of their useless lives that must be documented on Instagram.

4th of july at the pool with tunes rocking but without a chest of iced beer. To that I say no thank you.

Exactly my point. So my unsolicited advice is either decide to change that or just have beers at the pool on the 4th and understand that you don't win a prize for abstaining 31/31 days vs 30/31. One thing I learned when I quit drinking is how fundamentally boring some social settings/activities are without alcohol and to frequently numb oneself with alcohol in order to mitigate that essential boredom of one's "favorite" things is unhealthy and a waste of time and money--for me at least. YMMV.

People are already in the new years resolution mindset going into January. Plus people view it as a way to cut back, but also trim some weight after eating and drinking more than usual over the holidays.

This is my third year doing it and January is the best month. You're over all of the holidays and want a break, and it's much easier now as opposed to golfing, boating, grilling, by the pool, summer gatherings, after mowing the lawn, etc.

My post was somewhat tongue in cheek, but also somewhat serious. I think most people's goals should be a dryer January, dryer February, etc. For other people it should be cold turkey. But for me personally, pool parties centered around warm/hot holidays will be wet.

Never understood the concept of dry January then drink like a fish the balance of the year,.. I suspect that it's just an extension of the typical binge drinker's all or nothing mentality,.. Why not just moderate your consumption the entire year?

I am currently on a 61 year and 4 month streak of no alcohol. My age: 61 years and 4 months. Honestly never had any desire to drink alcohol.
