Along with CC doing her magic, Gabbie has been instrumental in these last few wins.

Colorado has a shooter going off to the point of leading the game with Kate trying to guard her. Gabbie gets switched to mostly guarding her and she suddenly went cold before fouling out.

HVL almost single-handedly keeps Louisville in the game last night in the first half, Gabbie gets switched onto her with what looked like a box and 1 defense. She still scored some points but had to work hard and was significantly slowed down contributing to the huge lead in the 3rd quarter.

Really huge contributions these past few games from her.

It was a Triangle and 2 with Martin and Marshall switching between VL and #3 for LVille.

Really smart defensive plan after the 8-0 start. I like this Iowa team, they do play some D unlike other teams from previous years, or are at least capable of playing D.

Kate is a decent defender, but there were multiple times where she gave up uncontested 3's to good shooters. Gabby is a freaken beast & only time it happened to her when she got caught up running thru screens.

At least she didn't get body-slammed to the floor trying to navigate thru a screen like she did against Colorado's behemoth post.

I agree with your comments fully. Gabbie deflects balls often during a game. I think her wingspan is much longer than you would expect from someone her size, plays great defense, and she is quick and anticipates very well. She has been instrumental in the drive to the FF. JMO

HVL seemed to be a bit full of herself and she appeared that her and CC are respectful, but not fans of each other. The handshake line they were pretty cool to each other. JMO

Her turnaround from the start of the season has been tremendous, and a major factor in their success, without question. That said, and as mentioned above, the switch to the T&2 defense was the much bigger factor in HVL not getting as many and their other gal who started off hitting everything and then had 1 basket in the second half (can't recall her name, sadly).
EVERYONE did at least one thing significant in the game yesterday. HS getting after rebounds, and playing solid defense. Same thing for Syd. AO'G gave good minutes. MW hitting a handful of HUGE shots early to get things rolling...the list goes on and on.
And needless to say, they'll need all of that and then some going forward.

^^^Because of all the crap that's been happening in the handshake lines, I did pay close attention and I agree, they were really avoiding eye contact.

Hawks should be pretty good on defense when they have Gabby and Kylie on the court at the same time next year. Always thought Kylie played good defense

Thanks for starting this appreciation thread. Yes, Gabby has quick feet, she really squats and bends to get into a very good defensive position and she is quick with the hip pivot. She did a great job and so did Kate.

Gabby being a little shorter like Van Lith seemed to give her that edge of having her hands by the ball, etc. As someone else said it was a triangle and 2 defense.

Van Lith and the other guard were the only two Ville players keeping them in the game.

I am really surprised that even after going to the triangle and two it still took a little while for the hawks to really just stick to those Ville gals like glue.

Coaches need to tell their players who they want to shut down an opponent to just get in their grill and dont even look to see where the ball is, do not help your teammates on defense, just look at that opponent and dont take your eye off them. The hawks did this very well the 2nd half

Just saw a video clip, somewhere, regarding the interaction between those two earlier in the game

The Louisville gal must have said something after a basket...and CC is heard saying.. "You're down by 15 points, shut up"!

hope all the detractors who were dogging her all year choke on one. I've been saying she has been lockdown all year. Defense takes a team. Gabbie has been all on season. Last night we saw what happens when the whole team is on.

I"m so excited for next year when we'll see Gabbie/Taylor both at the two and even more excited to see how good each will get going against each other in practice. One of the best shooters going against the best defender on the team and Taylor's defense should improving guarding Gabbie aka the Sniper in practice all day.

Even without Warnock I think Iowa has all the talent to make it back to back Final Fours next season.

Down by 8 and we took that timeout Van Lip yells this is my house bitch. When she went to the bench her coach grabbed her by the face and said we don't do that here or something to that effect.

Gabby shut down PSU's Marissa and a couple others way below their scoring averages in the Big Ten conference this year as well.
