...in a recent Miami Heat summer league game. Not trying to make too much of this, but a positive recap from the Heat's site.

"....2 – Gabriel Olaseni Takes Advantage

With Willie Reed no longer on the HEAT’s Summer League roster, Olaseni has embraced his opportunity as a starter. Against Utah, the big man out of Iowa finished a lot of plays at the rim and was a main focus of Miami’s offense. He benefited from some nice dishes by Shabazz Napier in the first half, including one where Napier froze the defense with a nifty hesitation dribble. Olaseni finished the game with 14 points and six rebounds...."

I don't think it is likely (with Stoudamire, the Heat have 3 bigs on their roster I think) but I hope the Miami signs him. The Heat is affiliated with the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the NBADL. For purely selfish reasons, I would like to see Gabe play some pro ball.

Man, wouldn't it be great if Olaseni had another year of eligibility at Iowa - many thought he was a little raw and could have used a redshirt his 1st year. He started playing BB relatively late and noticeably improved each successive year with the Hawks.

I think the best thing for Gabe would be to start the season in the D League. The pay sucks, but if he can get some consistent run in the 25-30 minute range, his skills will develop quickly and someone will find a place in the league for him in the next couple years.

I wonder on average how many NBA player spots are actually vacant each year? With many NBA players holding down a roster spot for 10 up to 20 or more years it doesn't even leave enough vacancies for all of the 60 draft picks to find a home.

With his London connection he could try the NBA D league for two years and still play 10 years in Europe. I'm sure he's going for it

This is why I think GO may get the call with the NBA, being raw. His late start in bball cannot be overlooked. And in a league where they take 20 year old guys on "potential", he has a chance.

Gabe can go to Europe and make a lot of money. But maybe staying in the states for a year or so wouldn't be a bad idea.

If he were to be in the d league and play well or an injury to one of the heats bigs. he could get a ten day contract which is around 1,000,000 dollars or so.
