Garbage officiating

Definitely on the wrong side of some calls, but that did not lose us the game. Too inexperienced in first half and couldn't make shots when needed. This is the way games will be called all year. Better adapt

What? Too inexperience?? This game was called like last year. The antithesis of what we've seen this year.

To be fair, one senior played 2 minutes in the first half. The thing that bothered me were the reviews. Clearly, MG was fouled but I guess it did come off his hand last when he lost control of his left hand. Jok did not hit the ball out of bounds last. When they watched that tape again I hope they felt bad for missing those big calls.

That said, the poor first half play and lack of intensity in the first 5-6 minutes in the second half lost this game.

Four seniors and a junior starting and playing the inexperienced card?

We had uhl, Jones, Wagner, Flemming, Williams, and baer all make dumb mistakes in the first half thus contributing to our deficit. Now I'm not saying these guys didn't do anything good because they did, but their inconsistent play hurt us at times. So yes I think our inexperience hurt us in the first half. Fran was looking for any of the new guys to step up after gesell went out.

Starting with Gesell's drive where Smith clearly either fouled or knocked the ball out, every call down the stretch went Dayton's way. Not blaming the officiating, but that's a fact. We missed front ends of one and one which cost us big, and didn't hit a few of the looks we should have in the last two minutes. That being said, shouldn't we be playing through Uthoff in the final three minutes.

I thought we were playing in East lansing with Valentine's crew. Some of the worst officiating we have seen since Teddy.

Fleming could be a nice player down the road, but not sure why he played at all tonight.

Can anyone explain what happened early in 2nd when Clemmons clearly stole the ball. The ref blew the whistle and stopped for Dayton guy to tie his shoe....then all of the sudden Daytons ball to throw in????

The must have called AC oob even though the Dayton guy literally took a full swing at the ball. There were a couple of dozen head scratching calls. It wasn't called the same on both ends.

All in all a high quality game and tournament to help us get ready for the B1G. We have some new faces that we need to have contribute in order to have depth. These are the types of opponents these guys need to see vs Cream Puff U. Dayton was pretty dang good and it sounds like they made the sweet 16 last year and almost beat Oklahoma for the right to play MSU in the final 8? Archie Miller can recruit and coach. No shame in losing this one.

Positives are we battled back from a large deficit and got within 1 stop of winning it. We hit 12 threes so we are showing signs of being a better shooting team than previous seasons when we could not throw it in the ocean from 3. Gessell hardly played in the first half. Ellingson who many wrote off before the season hit 3 triples in the second half. The kid is not afraid.

The negatives are we cannot stay in front of quick guards and consistently contain dribble drives. Our team D was inconsistent. Rebounding is not as good without White and Olesani. Miss way too many front ends of one & ones.

Flyer fan here, nice comeback in the 2nd half. As regards refs, many of the comments about bad calls made were are almost the same as comments on the Flyer's board. Nobody likes the refs and can site examples to prove their points. We are a young team with freshmen getting a lot of minutes. As to the Flyer fan base, not unusual to see the sea of red at the tournament, that is one of the reasons ESPN loves the Flyers, we fill the seats and last night's broadcast looked so much better with fans in the stands vs all the empty seats at other tourneys. Would think that both teams will dance.

Well there certainly was an awful lot of hand checking going on last night and I don't want to blame the refs for the loss, but some of the calls especially that steal by Clemens I didn't get that at all

What made me upset was on Scoochie's right hand drive bucket with inside two minutes left, McElvene screened Woodbury and kept pushing him away from the basket. They were battling for position but McElvene got really physical. Woody's left leg was a foot off the ground fighting to maintain position. Play was right in front of the baseline ref. No call for moving screen/offensive foul. Maybe Woody needed to actually fall down in order to get the call. Made a difference in the game certainly.

2 out of 3 officials from last night have have refereed the NCAA Men's Basketball Final. Iowa had 22 fouls compared to Dayton's 21.

The refs were bad for both sides. Towards the last 3 minutes of the game the calls definitely swung way more Daytons way than Iowa's, but what truly lost Iowa the game was poor free throw shooting, rebounding and defense. The first half it looked like Iowa didn't know what defense was and it wasn't until they came back that Iowa started playing defense.

Not going to blame the loss on the officiating, but after the call on the Dayton player for pushing Woodbury, the tone of the calls immediately changed. Woodbury picked up a quick two and it seemed as though every call went their way for awhile.

The small Asian looking ref is should look into another profession. He was absolutely awful last last night. He should be embarrassed.

Hawkeyes 22 fouls, Flyers 21 fouls. Pretty close. Flyers hit their 1 and ones, Hawks did not. Fouls affected both teams, as key players on both teams had to sit.

That's presuming that each team actually committed nearly the same amount of fouls. Driving 65 on an interstate will get you no ticket. Try it in town.
