Seemed that down the last month of the BigTen season that Garza didn't seem to get to the line as much and wasn't getting the calls he did earlier so broke things down.

November: Iowa 5-2 Garza 21-36 58.3% 5.14 FT Attempts/game

December: Iowa 5-1 Garza 26-38 68.4% 6.33 FT Attempts/game

January: Iowa 5-3 Garza 43-64 67.2% 8.00 FT Attempts/game

February: Iowa 5-3 Garza 28-46 60.9% 5.75 FT Attempts/game

March: Iowa 0-2 Garza 9-11 81.8% 5.50 FT Attempts/game

So also looked at how much did Luka fall in love with the 3pointer?

November: 17 attempts 2.43 attempts/game

December: 14 attempts 2.33 attempts/game

January: 28 attempts 3.5 attempts/game

February: 42 attempts 5.25 attempts/game

March: 8 attempts 4.00 attempts/game

just bored and thought I'd share.

Bored*

Edit: Sorry, tbh I thought there would be more replies to this thread. Feel bad for starting it off with a spellcheck smartass. Anyway, it would be nice to see those side by side by game. Not sure I’m seeing a clear trend here but everything goes hand in fist...Garza needs to get to the line. He needs to get the ball inside to get to the line.

That said, I would actually suspect that there would be a closer correlation between Garza getting to the line and the rest of the team shooting well. Easy to double Garza when our shooters aren’t shooting well.

The three pointers are what get me. Absolutely no problem if he shoots 1 or 2 early to mix it up for how he has to be defended but he’s most effective on the block. There’s a reason they’re baiting you into shooting that instead of looks inside 5 feet..

Up until about three weeks ago Luka was shooting about 38% from three, so no problem if he takes 3 or 4 a game for me. Its part of his overall package and keeps defenders guessing and harder for them to double. I think the biggest reason his % has dropped is he's playing more minutes the last several weeks. He's had three games where he played from 39 to 40 minutes.

The drop-off in attempts per game do certainly correlate with the idea that refs are letting more sh** go.

It's not like Garza is hanging out away from the basket way more now like Tyler Cook would do last year and disappear for most of a half......

It's like I and others have said, the whining coaches have finally gotten to B10 officials about allowing their players to be more physical with Garza in order to try to contain him (because otherwise it would be an unfair advantage *sniffle sniffle*).

As for the 3 pt numbers, yes he kind of fell in love with the shot a bit more, but I also think given that we have stretches where we struggle to even get looks from 3, let alone make them with consistency, Garza has taken it upon himself to step out a bit more because he could maybe find an open 3 against a sagging post defender, compared to Weiskamp or Frederick who are being hounded on and off the ball.......

So at the very least Garza is trying to generate some outside offense when we aren't getting any otherwise (at times).

I agree, though, that he could probably focus a bit more on staying inside and looking for kick-outs against the double team to generate more outside shots.

How often does Iowa get an open look from 3 where Garza gets it in the post, the double comes, and he finds the open man, who then immediately swings it around the perimeter as the anticipated help comes (i.e. the extra pass), which should leave that 3rd person wide open for 3?...........

Every team does that against Iowa COUNTLESS times a game (some more, some less depending on talent, style, etc).

Yet, how often do we see Iowa look for that same shot....and get it?

It's like Iowa trying to blitz most years, under Kirk Ferentz where it looks like we're blitzing just to say "hey we can do it too" and it gets easily picked up like a small child that stole something..............
