Garza! Man among boys

In high school I worked at a K-6 after school daycare and my dominance on the court against those little kids was basically what Garza did to Iowa State tonight.

There have been some great players from both schools through the years who have shined in this rivalry game. Nobody will ever top what Garza did tonight in terms of sheer dominance and efficiency. Guy has mastered the collegiate game and itā€™s beautiful to watch.

I admit to saying, ā€˜now thatā€™s a man!ā€™ at one point in the game even before that announcer comment. He was unstoppable. Iā€™ve never seen a big shoot like that - except maybe Nowitski, I suppose.

Uthoff when he had 30 in the first half vs Iowa St was great until he went back to his dorm room at half to study.

John & Eric were talking about Garza in the post-game, and speculating on why the NBA didn't consider him a lottery pick. One of them said, "You'd think knowing how to play basketball would count for something." Sarcasm, of course. Pretty funny.

That was a truly amazing display in the second half.

My question is why did the refs not review Garzaā€™s third foul for Hook&hold? It was pretty obvious defender hooked his arm and held it up for official to screw up call.

I have seen players score a bunch of points in quick bursts in my life. Heck, in 2008, we saw Justin Johnson hit 6 three point shots in the final two minutes of a game we lost to Indiana. But I can't remember any big man, like Luka, going on a scoring rampage like he did last night. Unconscious from three and snaring every offensive board and laying them back in. It was a truly memorable experience. It was one of those "hold my beer" moments.

Didn't Isaiah Moss score like 18 against Minnesota in two minutes or some crazy shit like that?

I've watch Iowa basketball for over fifty years, we have never had a player like Luka. I'll go a step farther, this team has a lot of offensive weapons and may be the best I've seen. I am concerned about our defense, especially on the perimeter but I expect that to improve as the season progresses.

No comparison, what Garza did in 16 minutes absolutely blows what Rhodes did out of the water in 40+.

I remember that game well, had to listen to that game on the radio as I was doing my job repairing a water main in freezing weather.
Have a question for you all....was that game by Rhodes, what was it 50+ points, did he continue scoring in double figures for the entire season or was that just an anomaly?

Lafester had 54 in that game, plus 14 rebounds. He finished the year averaging 22 points and was second team all conference in a year when the Big Eight had a great senior class.
Wouldnā€™t compare his game to Garza last night; for one thing, Iowa was ranked 7th in the nation. Iowa State last night wasnā€™t.

Nba is different game.

Luka could absolutely score in the nba, thats not the issue.

But if he can shoot like that from 3 the rest of the season they won't be able to resist drafting him.

Whichever guy said it, it was meant as a compliment to Garza. I hope I didnā€™t mislead anybody about that.

I understood that.

Just explaining why the nba doesn't consider him a lottery pick.

And I'm really glad they didn't last year.

Just under 18 ppg the rest of the season and he takes his rightful place as the best player in Iowa history, and I saw Ronnie play.

No one has ever done what Luka has done as a Hawkeye, not even close.

Yeah, Moss seemed to have the ability to score at will when the pressure was totally off,.. If you recall, we lost that game.
The thread was about a player going off for insane amount of points in a short amount of time, that was my only point, not if we win or lost.

I was not a fan of Moss going from great to invisible at warp speed.

I never thought Iā€™d see a player that lifted his team better than Ronnie Lester... when you needed a score , a steal, a no looker to a teammate, stealing a rebound from someone much bigger and his ability to change gears and finish, he was the best. Having said that, Luka Garza stepping out and dropping a three , making a block, , scoring from everywhere at any level and pulling in passes that most players would lose out of bounds has been so automatic that your shocked if he doesnā€™t score every time he touches the ball. Heā€™s become so fluid.
I canā€™t decide but wow Iā€™m really enjoying this , every bit as much as I did watching Lester. Now should Luka get us to a Final Four, I might be persuaded

The best illustration of that very thing was the tournament game in 2019 when he hit a big shot in regulation then did nothing in overtime.

Yeah, but at the time Moss hit that corner shot, I bet most of Hawkeye Nation was extremely excited and didn't have a negative thought on their minds toward Moss. I know I didn't, it was lighting in a bottle.....and kept the game going.

I don't normally bash our players, but will say, we finally get a kid from the famed Simeon Academy HS and he turns out to be a relatively average player.
